Video (gameplay + commentary): https://youtu.be/I7r6uE__k6g This game is a great handful of minutes of fun. It's not long, but it's a great little snapshot of some fun arcade twinstick shooting with crunchy pixels and some nice rolling scenery that you don't have to take remotely seriously. A+++++ would defend our hive again!
BeeFender is a badly made GameMaker Studio construction kit game (but it's not an asset flip... the game assets are too poor quality to be professionally produced). This GameMaker Studio job has you twin-stick wave survival shooting around your beehive to protect it from incoming enemies. Occasionally a spider will fling a web at you and fix you in place for a while. There's different phases to the game, but it's not worth progressing, even for the easy achievements. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. A choice was made to use obsolete, decades old retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts. Some of the defects in the game can be attributed to the choice of using the GameMaker Studio construction kit/toolset. This is a very poor quality toolset favoured by amateur developers as it's cheap and requires little in the way of development skill, but unfortunately has very limited capabilities. Just as you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear, you can't make a great video game if you use a terrible engine. GameMaker Studio is most commonly used to make retro pixel shovelware and cash grabs. A strong argument can be made that construction kits like GameMaker Studio should never be used to make games for profit, as the "developer", BWT Games has done here. These construction kits are intended to teach people some of the basic principles of game development, and to make small demos to pass around with friends. They're not intended to replace to actual work of real, professional game developers. So it's inappropriate when amateurs try to use these for profit, without any actual, real game development effort taking place. This doesn't result in products that have any real meaningful value for gamers. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 3 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from (over 9,000 completely free titles), the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. BeeFender is relatively cheap at $1 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend.
This game is ♥♥♥♥♥♥' delightful but on the real though, bears can go ♥♥♥♥ themselves. Same with spiders too. Beefender brings an awesomely creative setting / idea to the arcade shooter scene, and I was more than happy spending less than a dollar on it! I mean, who the ♥♥♥♥ thinks up the idea to play as a bee defending it's hive by shooting a butt gun? Fantastic! Check out some gameplay here! - https://youtu.be/xHeN3HFfxGE
It was fun for a few minutes but I will likely never play it again after today. "Stage 2" sprites got very blurry, dont know why, but at least I placed in the top 10... Recommendations: - Bee hive shield - HP bars - FULL MMORPG Support - Better User Feedback - Prepare for meaner people
While I may not have much time invested in the game so far, I think for a game like this it's somewhat justifiable considering you get the gist of it after a round or two of playing. DISCLAIMER: I did receive a beta-key for free from the Devs, and the game is still in early access, so it may be subject to changes/improvements/whathaveyous. PROS: -Cute artstyle. -Simple controls, with a slight learning curve. -Excellent music. -Runs like a charm. CONS: -Very simple, meaning there's not a lot too it. -Screen can get really busy at times. MEHS: -Short rounds mean you can pick it up and play to kill a few minutes, but it does make it hard to play for extended periods of time. -Not a lot of powerups means there's not a huge amount of variety to defending your hive. It's an incredibly simple, incredibly charming score-attack shoot-em-up. You gotta defend your hive from birds, bugs, bears, and your own inability to dodge a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ spider web. The art is charming and colorful, the music sets the tone well, and the difficulty isn't *too* crazy. It can get surprisingly intense, especially since pickups are randomized, so not getting some bombs or drones for a while (while sometimes annoying), can really put the pressure on to prioritize what you gotta kill. Honestly, there's not really much else to say about the game right now other than it runs well, and is extremely satisfying to play. I'm hoping in the future to see a bit more variety in the ways you can defend your hive, as well as enemy types and possibly different bees, and a way to compare scores just between certain people (friends, or with instanced scoreboards), which would go a long way towards increasing the life of the game. Even as it is now though, it's a wonderful game to try and compete for a high score with a friend or amongst streamers. Also I beat the Devs at their own game FeelsGoodMan :^)
As the number 1 Beechampion I got to say that this game is pretty ok. Its got quite a few problems that I rather describe in video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LrorFJJN0SI&feature=youtu.be Overall it just needs a little more work before it's ready to get out of early access. Final Grade: Bee+
This game is so cool! What an awesome concept! I love the retro graphics and the cute music! Awesome Job! <3
My friend bought this game for me thinking it was nice wholesome content,
little did she know about the gorey hectic slaughter in stage 2
The game doesnt have much depth to it but it is a very enjoyable twin stick shooter which I will probably invest a lot more hours in trying to find that damn hidden achievement. Really excited to see more of you guys. 10/10 would get caught by the spider as I watch a bear maul my home and family to shreds again. One thing about this game that can really get on your nerves though is how at times the game consistently fails to give you the right power-ups to make it past certain points in the game, mainly looking at the fire rate upgrade here. Edit: Some recommendations -Pause menu -A way of seeing how many times you collected a powerup during a game
It's a great game but also a deeply touching commentary on life and human greed. No matter how hard you work there will always be bloodsucking VULTURES coming for your honey.
