I like this game a lot. Who knew!?!? The worst thing about it is none of the instrument playing matches what the instrument is playing in the song. But it's more of an arcade game. Once you accept that and just play the game like it wants you to then it starts to become fun, challenging, and competitive. There's about 50 songs to unlock. The unlocking is what keeps you coming back. You unlock clothes and can customise your avatar which can be seen by the community when you upload your play data. So there's a bit of a flex factor that makes it addictive. I would also point out that the negative reviews are people comparing it to Konami's other rhythm games. Compared to other VR rhythm games this is actually pretty good like an 7-8/10.

I'm just gonna be honest here. The guitar sucks. All the other instruments are good except the guitar because up strumming is so terrible. I am a good player at this game but playing the guitar i miss so much because the guitar strumming. Please fix the Up and down strumming.
Yo Beat Arena is FUN!! It's not perfect, but it's a good time. Character creation is just fine. Nothing groundbreaking, but your character will probably come out looking cool/cute unless you're really trying to go nuts. The music selection is *okay*. If you haven't played BEMANI games before you might not recognize any of the music (and even if you have, you still probably won't recognize half the music). If you play the game for a while the music should grow on you. I knew like 4 of the songs when I started playing but now I'm jamming to just about all of them. IDK if Konami's gonna add more songs, but the game's website says it's planned. The instruments are also *okay*: -The drums are definitely the most fun to play IMO; you can play them kinda close to how you'd play real drums. The only thing is my hands tend to phase through some of the drums sometimes and it causes a double-hit on the way back up. -Keyboard is my second favorite instrument in the game, pretty easy to get the hang of. Your hands also aren't glued to the instrument so you can have some extra fun with your hands when you have rest during a song. -Bass is a close third. My problem is that the two string instruments' pluck zones move around kind of weirdly with your hands, and it's made weirder because I don't have a guitar-shaped thing in my hands. What's cool is, at least with the Knuckles controllers, you can use your index+middle fingers on the trigger and pluck like you would a real bass. -Guitar is hard as heck, IMO. Maybe I just haven't spent enough time with it but the pluck zone thing combined with having to actually strum the guitar kills my enthusiasm. I've seen some people do well with it though, so maybe it just takes practice. Definitely play the campaign to get a feel for all the instruments. It helps a lot! At a certain point, though, the instruments start feeling more like a vehicle for interacting with your bandmates, which is where Beat Arena gets really fun: the replay performances! It's frickin' sick downloading replays and jamming with other people's recordings. Some people get really into it, others just goof around, but everyone's having a good time. You also get special points for making eye contact with your bandmates when you're prompted. It seems kind of weird at first, but it definitely makes the performances more convincing. Less like 3 randos playing instruments on the same stage, more like an actual band vibing with each other. After a while you start noticing when people *don't* look at you and it's like, come on! Gimme some attention! Be sure to check out the settings too! Some of the more annoying stuff can be disabled, like the "thumbs up/wave/nod to start the song". You can also change your guitar/bass mode from slide (air guitar style) to button (guitar hero-ish style), and have the game show you the pluck zone during songs. TL;DR: Beat Arena's strength is in interacting with other players. Add people's replay performances to your band for maximum enjoyment! Most people will probably find the drums and keyboard the easiest to start out with. Music selection is decent, but you'll probably be unfamiliar with the songs. If you get the game, make sure to add me to some of your performances! I like to try and make the performances as fun as I can :)
I really wish this was something more than it is. The song selection is rather light, and only a handful of songs I actually enjoy. I also wish there was more variation in stages and modes. Hopefully they will come out with a gitadora version or a BeatArena 2.
The game caught my eye when I was looking for something to do with beatsaber's mods down, but given the reviews, I kinda expected to not like this and refund it. With that said, at just under 2 hours, I do like it and I plan on keeping it. I think $30 is a bit much, but if it's on sale, I'd definitely take a look, given you like the music choice. It's broken up into four instruments, guitar, bass, keyboard and drums. Guitar and Bass are very similar, the one difference being you have to "pluck" the bass by clicking in the trigger whereas you just strum in the air to hit notes on guitar. I definitely prefer bass and pressing a button feels more responsive. They're both similar though, and decent. Occasionally I feel like it misses a strum, but as I play more, that happens less and less, so it is probably just getting use to it. Keyboard is reminiscent of Deemo reborn if you've played that. You just tap on the virtual keoboard where the notes come. I've played keyboard the least, it's alright, probably my least favorite, although on easier charts you can put on a good performance given it is easy to play with just one hand. Drums are the most fun by far, it's basically just playing the drums. I liked ragnarok, but I like playing the drums here even more. Song selection appeals to me, basically the same kinda stuff I'd play on beatsaber. Tracks can be a little short, but I myself don't mind shorter tracks. Difficulty is alright. Tried a few of the harder charts and they are a challenge, but not a crazy challenge. Nothing mind bending, so as you get pretty proficient that could be a downer. An aspect this game pushes is interacting with your band members. And it sounds kinda dumb, but I do have fun trying to both put on a good performance and actually hit all the notes. While you don't play live multiplayer, you can upload your performance and in turn, download other peoples' to play with. Some people really have a good time, which in turn made my sessions more fun. I have already found a few people I enjoy playing with, and I'm always looking for their data in particular. It's not all good though, otherwise it would be an easy recommend vs my on sale recommendation. For one, and I guess this applies to a lot of rhythm games without custom song support, there's only so many charts, so compared to the endless user content you have in say: beatsaber or synthriders, you will run out of new charts. They have added some new songs in updates and stated they plan to add more, but who knows. At least with each song you have a couple instruments to play so you do get a good amount of content per song. Also, aspects are kind of janky. As far as I know you can't reposition the instruments in song, only out of a song in a menu. Maybe I just haven't found out how, but if so, I'd say then that it isn't easily found which is a problem. The song menu is bad, as you just see a bunch of floating icons. Having to touch the menu buttons versus point in select is something I'm never a fan of. So yeah, $30 is asking perhaps a bit more than I'd have been willing to pay, had beatsaber mods not been down. If it's on sale, I would give it a shot. And hey, even tho mods are back, when I have free time later I'm planning to jump back into here :)
Pretty good substitute for the actual arcade games. Takes some practice to be accurate though.
