Genre

Follow Main group
Follow Second group
When Unreal Engine 4 was introduced in 2012 (or rather in 2014 to a larger audience), a wave of indie games were released powered by it. With its relative ease of use and amazing features it offered, many developers chose it to propel their games. The quality of these first games were well represented by the notorious(ly bad) Daylight, a horror game - hyped by some youtube-influencers - that neither was a good game nor could it use its features properly, that could have justified the presence of Unreal Engine 4. In this line fits Beastiarium, this very short (and glitchy) indie first-person puzzle-adventure, that is NOT a horror game (even if there were any traces of it, it's ruined by the narrative, the poor selection of music and the bizarre, often comical looking creatures it deploys). The features with which the game advertises itself ('plot-driven quest and action-horror', 'seamless game world with sandbox elements', or 'charismatic characters — each one with its own personality and background') are misleading and are vastly exaggarating its dimensions. As we learn it from the intro, all sorts of monsters have appeared on Earth and the one explaining this to us is actually in our head (for learning purposes, what else?). Soon after we wake up in the hallways of an apartment building, in St. Petersburg, Russia and it seems our aim is to descend underground in order to escape from the monsters (?). Throughout the 9 chapters the game has to offer we either have to solve various puzzles, do fetch quests, find keys, or just simply have to run away from something dangerous. Since the game is roughly 1.5 hours long, these are not very complex or overly hard tasks. The most common difficulties that may occur are probably the results of either the (unadjustable) darkness or some unfair segments (like the labyrinth or the electric fish - 'swimming' in the air) that were meant to prolong the gameplay. On one occasion we also encounter the 'stare-at-the-monster-so-it-won't-move'™ solution, used by some cheap horror games. As the narrative which sounded crazy from the get-go deteriorates and we defeat 'the Guard' in the final chapter (who is supposed to be protecting people, but since we have a monster inside our head, it's not that surprising that he attacks us...) we simply receive a meaningless pseudo-philosophical endgame [strike]garbage[/strike] trivia. That's it. Despite the possibilities the engine has to offer, the graphics doesn't look that good. All chapters (with the exception of maybe one) take place in narrow, claustrophobic environments. The 'people' we interact with aren't animated, they talk to us from behind closed doors which is a cheap way to cut costs... the 'monsters' look either comical or just simply plain. Somehow they also managed to choose the music to completely jar with the given segments, for example when we run away from the corpses in the sewers and a lame techno track kicks in was a pretty awkward experience. There is voice acting for the most part and it's quite cheesy too, but at least it exists. Technically it's also terribly buggy, especially towards the end, where we get all sorts of problems ranging from falling through the floor to crashes (both these occured on the electric fish + armoured soldier levels). At this point the fact that used or obsolete items not disappearing from our inventory is really not worth mentioning. Most Russian games are not known for their high quality (at least here on Steam) and of course it's possible the developers wanted to make a more elaborate game originally (something similar to the case of The Crows Eye - but that was a more complex game with actual traces which indicated that it was planned to be more) and they had to cut it short due to tight schedules or budgets, but there's no excuse for false advertising. And while there are worse games on Steam, I wouldn't count it as a redeeming feature for this title. PROS + there are puzzles in it CONS - despite its shortness it still crashes - misleading advertising, no horror - weird, meaningless background story and ending - graphics despite UE 4 are rather plain - atmosphere killing music - overpriced for its length RATING 1.5/10
This game is like solving a riddle you haven't been told, it's trying to find a solution without knowing the problem. You just wander around not knowing what to do untill you either stumble upon the answer or get frustrated and look up a guide.
The game is so off-putting, cheap and weird that I didn't even complete it even though people say it's an under 1hour experience. I didn't expect too much but this is just bad. Good thing I paid pennies for it
