[h1]BattleBlock Theater[/h1] [h3]Surreal and Joyful Platformer[/h3] [h3]Really worth trying![/h3] BattleBlock Theater is a classic platformer visually inspired by 2010s Adobe Flash-style animations and the absurd internet-era cartoon comedy that was popular at the time. It has a pretty unique personality with a sour and chaotic sense of humor, creative level design, and an entertaining but unserious story. It’s worth mentioning that this game has recently received a quality-of-life remaster, but it is mostly oriented to improving the game’s visual and audio quality. It doesn’t add any new content, although the improvements in these areas are noticeable and the gameplay now feels smoother and more polished. [h3]Gameplay[/h3] This title focuses on short fast-paced levels, simple controls and genuinely unique and surprisingly creative obstacles that I honestly hadn’t seen in other platformers before. One of the game’s biggest strengths is its variety of traps, enemies, and puzzles. Each level introduces new obstacles and areas that are really fun to explore on your own, or in co-op with friends. Unlike other platformers that rely on power-ups, BattleBlock Theater features weapons and tools that can be useful both for combat and for easily passing through obstacles. It’s genuinely satisfying to use these items to clear levels quickly, especially when you can manage to pull off certain exploits and shortcuts through them. [h3]Art and World Design[/h3] This game has a nice cartoonish style with very colorful and expressive environments. The game is set inside a huge penitentiary theatre-like island, where our character is forced to survive absurd obstacle courses. Every level feels really like part of a bigger theatrical set, and it manages to create the sensation of being an actual participant in some kind of absurd obstacle show. It also has a character customization system, where you can unlock and equip different heads and weapons to give your character a lot more personality. It’s a simple feature, but it adds an extra small replay value and makes the game feel more rewarding, especially when playing co-op with friends. [h3]Music and Sound effects[/h3] I absolutely love this game’s music, the soundtrack is very energetic and playful with many cool tracks that perfectly match the game’s chaotic and cartoonish world. As for the sound effects, they are simple but quite effective with small audio cues for jumping, attacking and triggered traps. They fit perfectly with the cartoonish style of the game.
