About
Survive the 13th Century
Bastide is a medieval city-building strategy game where you must guide a vulnerable village of peasants toward survival and prosperity. Starting with almost nothing, you will manage resources, assign vital jobs, and expand your meager settlement into a thriving, fortified town. But beware: starvation, disease, brutal winters, and ruthless bandits are constantly at your gates. Careful and efficient management of your people is essential, as danger can strike at any time.

Key Features:
From Peasant Village to Fortified Town: Assign your villagers to a wide variety of jobs to gather food, manage resources, and construct buildings. Organizing your labor force efficiently is the only way to ensure your people's survival and continued growth.
Harvest, Hunt, and Husbandry: Take advantage of the wilderness around your settlement. Hunt wild animals or raise livestock in pastures to provide your people with life-saving resources, including meat for food, and wool and hides for clothing, tools, and winter warmth.
Play Your Way: Whether you want a punishing medieval survival experience or a relaxing city-builder, Bastide adapts to you. Tweak multiple difficulty settings or disable enemy invasions entirely to tailor the game to your preferred playstyle.
Endless Replayability: No two landscapes are the same. Procedurally generated maps offer endless variety and new geographical challenges with every single playthrough.
Powered by Unreal Engine 5: Experience the harsh beauty of the Middle Ages brought to life with modern, next-generation rendering.

I have been playing city builders for about two years, and I want to start by pointing out something important. Bastide is an Early Access game, which means it is still under development and should not be judged as a finished product. It is also important to keep in mind that some city builders are made by large teams of specialized developers, while others are built by much smaller teams. This naturally impacts how fast a game grows, how much content it has, and how polished it feels. It is also one of the reasons why the price is lower. Players who have experience with games like Banished, Ostriv, or Manor Lords and expect the same level of depth will probably not be fully satisfied at this stage. The foundation is clearly there, but the game still needs more content and further development. On the other hand, players who are new to medieval city builders, or simply want a lower-priced entry into the genre, will likely enjoy it. The price makes it an easy game to try without feeling like you are taking a big risk. I will not repeat issues that many other players have already mentioned, but I do want to highlight something that, for me, is a major positive. The game gives you the option to play in a relaxed way without enemies, allowing you to focus purely on building and growing your settlement at your own pace. For players who prefer a calm and creative experience instead of constant pressure, this is a big advantage. My biggest concern is the very slow regeneration of trees, which directly affects the development speed of your village. I would also like to see more decorative options, as the visual aspect is an important part of city-building games. Overall, Bastide shows real potential, and I hope future updates will expand the content and improve the experience. If you are looking for a fully polished city builder, it might be better to wait. However, if you enjoy relaxed gameplay and like watching a game evolve over time, Bastide is definitely worth keeping an eye on.
This game seems very half-baked, or just quarter-baked.... so many features in the game don't even work. So much guess work because any progress made in a production building is invisible, with no way to tell what is going on. Additionally, there is no clear method of defending against invaders. No town center or the like to call your villagers to, when invaders attack. So despite having plenty of weapons in the warehouse, your villagers are killed off one-by-one, with no means of directing them, nor arming them with the weapons on hand, nor any logical or rational method of defense.
Pretty good game, average graphics but good principle, enjoyable and has potential to be a gem. has a medievalist and a realistic feel to it, which is what buys it for me.
A very slow progressing game, even on the highest speed. This game has been in early-access forever. Very hard to tell what the 'parameters' are to bring in new families. People die of natural causes, but it takes a long time for kids to grow up and new families to join the community. This makes the game very boring. Another aggravating thing is the night cycle.....things go dark and you can't see anything to make moves and essentially nothing happens anyway. So, why bother?
Bastide is a city-building strategy based in the 13th century where you must guide your village of peasants to thrive and survive against other villages, bandits, hunger, disease, and the cold so that they may grow into a fortified town. The game is published and developed by MedievalNexus. Early Access Feels Bastide aims for a realistic vibe, with mechanics like seasons and weather actually impacting your gameplay. It’s not just about building; you really have to plan ahead if you want your little medieval town to survive and flourish. Let me get straight to the point: Bastide is an Early Access game, and it shows. That’s why this isn’t a full review, the game is still in development, and future updates could change a lot. As it stands now, it doesn’t quite feel complete. Should you buy it now? I’m on the fence. Early Access means you’re supporting development, but if progress is slow, it’s easy to feel a bit neglected as a player. So the choice is yours: do you support the devs early on, or wait for a more polished version? According to the notes on Steam, the game is still actively being worked on, but whether that’s enough is up for debate. The Potential Is There, But It Needs Direction In my opinion, Bastide definitely has potential. That said, this is one of those games that really needs a proper tutorial. I get that many city-builders skip this, but in this case, it would’ve made a big difference. I got stuck early and felt like I’d fallen into a deep hole with no clear way out. That’s a shame, because I genuinely wanted to spend more time in the game. When I didn’t know what to do, the developer suggested checking YouTube for tutorials. That’s helpful, sure, but I still think an in-game guide or onboarding system would make the experience way more welcoming, especially for newcomers to the genre. One thing that felt a bit unpolished was the use of simple PNG images as pause screen backgrounds. It breaks immersion and makes the game feel a bit rushed or unfinished, even if it’s just a cosmetic detail. Luckily, Bastide is priced fairly low, so taking a chance on it might be worth it. Conclusion Bastide definitely shows promise as a medieval city-builder with realistic elements like seasons, weather, and survival mechanics. The foundation is solid, but the game still feels unfinished. Which makes sense, given that it’s in Early Access. The lack of a proper tutorial and some rough edges, like the pause screen visuals, make it harder to fully immerse yourself. That said, it’s clear the developer is still actively working on it, and given the relatively low price, it might be worth buying now to support its growth. For those who prefer a more refined experience, it might be better to wait a bit. Either way, Bastide is a game to keep an eye on, especially if the right improvements are made.
