Bad Memories, developed and published by bmrec, is a mature visual novel that blends psychological drama with adult themes in a deeply personal and emotionally charged narrative. Rather than relying solely on shock value or erotic content, the game attempts to explore the complexity of trauma, memory, and reconciliation through the lens of its central character—a protagonist who returns to face the emotional wreckage of their childhood. What starts as a seemingly standard story of romantic entanglements quickly reveals layers of emotional nuance, with themes ranging from grief and loss to familial dysfunction and personal healing. The game stands out for its willingness to tackle sensitive issues with an unflinching yet empathetic approach, all while retaining the interactivity and branching structure that defines the visual novel genre. The story unfolds around the player character, who has returned to a place tied to painful childhood memories, including the death of a parent and an upbringing marred by neglect and emotional trauma. The narrative allows players to select between a male or female protagonist, with the latter specifically exploring lesbian relationship routes, which introduces a measure of inclusivity not always seen in similar titles. The dialogue, choices, and character interactions are all shaped by this initial selection, lending the experience some replayability. While the storytelling is often heavy and confrontational, it never feels gratuitous; instead, the emotional weight is carried through grounded, believable interactions that strive to make the player reflect on the consequences of unresolved pain and long-buried resentment. Visually, Bad Memories features high-quality static renders with well-composed scenes and expressive character models that elevate the emotional moments beyond simple text and dialogue. The artwork, while stylized and clearly geared toward adult audiences, avoids descending into pure fan service. Animations are present but used sparingly, often reserved for moments of heightened emotion or intimacy. Backgrounds are well-detailed and immersive enough to give a sense of place, while UI design remains minimalist and functional, though still undergoing refinement in Early Access. The visual presentation pairs effectively with the writing to create a cohesive atmosphere that can shift from tense to tender within the span of a few scenes. The gameplay mechanics themselves are traditional for the visual novel format. Most of the interaction comes in the form of dialogue choices, which influence how relationships evolve and which narrative paths become available. While some decisions feel subtle, others clearly branch the story in significant ways. This dynamic is especially important given the personal nature of the subject matter; players often find themselves questioning their own morality, their ability to forgive, or how they might act if placed in the protagonist’s situation. The weight of these choices adds real depth to the experience, making it more than just a passive narrative. In this way, the game invites players to engage not just with characters, but with the ethical and emotional dilemmas they face. Being in Early Access, Bad Memories does carry the usual caveats. The story, as of now, is only partially complete—around two-thirds of the full narrative has been implemented. Certain side content is still in development, and minor bugs or save inconsistencies can crop up, especially between updates. There are also moments where the pacing feels uneven; some scenes are richly detailed and emotionally gripping, while others feel like placeholders or quick transitions between more developed sequences. The developer has been transparent about ongoing improvements and has indicated plans to refine existing visuals, complete additional storylines, and enhance audio design with more ambient and contextual sound effects. Despite these limitations, the game succeeds in crafting a world and a cast of characters that feel emotionally authentic. Relationships unfold with tension and unpredictability, never falling into cliché. Characters are flawed but never caricatured, and even the protagonist’s inner monologue reflects a mature, conflicted perspective rather than a one-dimensional voice. The game also rewards exploration of different relationship routes, each revealing new angles of the protagonist's past and different outcomes for their future. While romance plays a major role, it's often colored by guilt, uncertainty, and the burden of memory—adding complexity and emotional realism to what could otherwise be straightforward romantic arcs. For those drawn to emotionally resonant storytelling and not put off by explicit content, Bad Memories offers a compelling, sometimes uncomfortable, but ultimately human experience. It’s not a lighthearted or escapist game, nor does it pretend to be. Instead, it invites players to sit with discomfort, to explore emotional wounds that don’t heal easily, and to consider the messy, nonlinear nature of forgiveness and growth. The inclusion of adult content may limit its audience, but those who engage with the story on its own terms will find more than just surface-level titillation; they'll find a narrative that dares to be raw, vulnerable, and sincere. In its current state, Bad Memories is already an emotionally impactful visual novel with strong writing, meaningful choices, and striking visual presentation. Its unfinished aspects are apparent but not obstructive, and with continued development, it stands to become a standout title in the adult narrative genre. It offers more than just provocative content—it delivers a story about pain, memory, and the slow, uncertain path to redemption. For players looking for depth and emotional weight in their visual novels, it’s an experience worth diving into. Rating: 8/10

The failed incidents are in the middle of the game are a farce. Back to the drawing board!
Thought the game was dead, but just a while between updates. Very rewarding. SPOILER ALERT(?): The moment you/I realize(d) the reason Ellie's a bit "underdeveloped" is b/c of Rachel's former drinking problem.... Maybe I read to deep, but (dark?)/awesome/nuanced writing and characters
Given that the game has completely stalled, I'm going to assume it's abandoned. I mean 5 years to make half of a Renpy game? No.
A real quick review here: I had to fast forward through the second half after I became extremely annoyed with this game. With the forced sex with multiple different girls and how badly you treat the disabled girls therapist...I flat out was discusted with this story and I couldn't suggest bypassing it more.
great story line...male and female....haveing a hard time waiting on next installment/finish. 10 out 10 !!!!

Haven't seen any problems in the new update. I like the way the stories going.
Full of interesting twists.
