Backrooms: Realm of Shadows, developed and published by Cyprus Games, is a first-person horror experience that attempts to translate the unsettling concept of the Backrooms into an interactive format. Built around the idea of being trapped in an endless network of liminal spaces, the game places players in a disorienting environment filled with empty hallways, dim lighting, and an ever-present sense of something being wrong. Its premise is straightforward, but it taps into a specific kind of psychological discomfort, using familiarity and emptiness to create tension rather than relying solely on direct threats. The gameplay focuses on exploration, light puzzle-solving, and survival, with an emphasis on avoiding danger rather than confronting it. Players move through a series of interconnected areas, searching for items and clues that allow them to progress deeper into the maze. Environmental puzzles are simple but effective in slowing the pace and forcing players to pay attention to their surroundings. The absence of combat reinforces a feeling of vulnerability, making every sound and shadow feel significant. Encounters with hostile entities are designed to be unpredictable, encouraging cautious movement and careful observation rather than aggressive play. The level design attempts to capture the essence of the Backrooms through varied environments that maintain a consistent tone of isolation. Different sections introduce slight changes in layout, lighting, and obstacles, which helps prevent the experience from feeling completely repetitive. Some areas rely on maze-like structures that emphasize disorientation, while others incorporate hazards or narrative elements that hint at a deeper story. However, the lack of clear direction can sometimes make progression feel uncertain, as players may find themselves wandering without a clear objective or sense of advancement. Atmosphere is where the game performs most effectively. The use of sound design plays a crucial role in building tension, with distant noises, ambient hums, and sudden audio cues creating a persistent sense of unease. Visually, the game leans into the concept of liminal spaces, presenting environments that feel both familiar and unnatural at the same time. This combination of audio and visual elements succeeds in creating moments that are genuinely unsettling, particularly when the player is left alone with their thoughts in an empty corridor. Despite its strengths in atmosphere, the game struggles with technical and mechanical consistency. Performance issues, including bugs and occasional instability, can interrupt the immersion and detract from the overall experience. The controls and interaction systems, while functional, lack refinement, which can make certain actions feel less responsive than they should. These issues become more noticeable during moments that require precision or quick reactions, reducing the impact of the tension the game is trying to build. Pacing is another area where the experience feels uneven. While the slow, methodical exploration fits the tone of psychological horror, extended periods of wandering without clear progress can lead to frustration. The balance between tension and inactivity is not always consistent, and some sections may feel drawn out without adding meaningful content. Combined with a relatively short overall playtime, the game can feel both stretched and limited at the same time. Overall, Backrooms: Realm of Shadows succeeds in capturing the eerie and unsettling nature of its source concept, delivering moments of genuine tension through its atmosphere and sound design. However, its technical shortcomings, lack of polish, and inconsistent pacing prevent it from reaching its full potential. It remains an interesting but flawed experience, best suited for players who are particularly drawn to the Backrooms concept and are willing to look past its rough edges. Rating: 6/10

Probably one of my favorite Backroom games. Way different from the others. Wish for more lore. But hey! That's Backrooms! lol 10/10 on the pear scale.
