Austen Translation

A game you can play in short but sweet sessions to enjoy a little regency satire. Can get repetitive and could be improved with more complexity, but I enjoyed playing several rounds. It would be more fun to play with a group of friends, but when you're an Austen fan, you take what you can get. There really should be more Austen-esque video games.

A very ordinary game, in fact boring, I played when I was sick, while watching netflix.

[h1]Greatest Regency-era YAWHG-like in the Galaxy![/h1] Alright, so you've played [i]The YAWHG[/i] or [i]Monster Prom[/i] and want more of the same, right? Well, sorry to disappoint, but this game is far fancier and schmancier than anything else EVER. One might say, all other games are NOCD. It is a truth universally acknowledged that if one wishes to make an Austen homage, one better get the language right. And by turf n' thunder, [i]Austen Translation[/i] accomplishes this and more. The geniuses at [b]Worthing & Moncrieff[/b] parrot Miss Austen's prose, pacing, style, themes, memes, AND manage to get the historical details spot on. If you know anything at all about Jane Austen's novels, this game will make you smirk. If you enjoy the comedy of manners, period pieces set in Regency, or the British poking fun at themselves, then you'll probably laugh. Perhaps twice. This game is fun and def more enjoyable with friends.

For starters, Austen Translation deserves some serious props for the levels of wordplay in the title. First there’s the reference to Jane Austen, author of Pride and Prejudice. As Kotaku rightly points out, she opens the novel with: “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.” Second is the near homophone with Lost In Translation. Third is how, when put together, it sounds close to ostentatious – ok maybe this is a reach but it’s also a perfect thematic fit for the game. Austen Translation plays like a casual board game. You satirically play as an impoverished woman seeking a wealthy bachelor to marry. You can hotseat with other players or play against AI. Each turn involves you choosing an action that will raise your Wit, Charm or Ruthlessness while lowering that of your opponents. By the end, each bachelor will choose a lady whose characteristics match his desired traits best. The joy in this game comes from the writing: both for the narration as well as the playable action cards. Sabotaging your opponent by allowing them to step in the turd you noticed is just plain funny. So too is passive aggressively noting that the boat you’re on is now riding quite low since one of your rivals boarded. For this, Austen Translation might be a fun way to spend an evening with friends. Un jeu fantastique! Il semble avoir été écrit par de vrais connaisseurs de Jane Austen (mais de notre temps), qui ont parfaitement que celle-ci n'écrivait pas simplement des "romans à l'eau de rose" mais bien des chroniques sociales acides... et pas si optimistes sur la situation des femmes malgré les fins qui semblent heureuses. La voix off est parfaite (même quand elle vous engueule de la zapper!), certains détails que n'auraient pas écrit Jane sont hilarants et la mécanique de jeu est prenante. Un régal, qui vaut la peine de troquer un roman pour son ordinateur le temps de quelques parties (en faisant attention, car c'est addictif aussi!).

Witty and charming little game. Playing it with friends is probably better than playing along. I really like the narrator's voice.

This is a simple game to play, but it quickly becomes very repetitive. Also, if you are the type who wants 100% completion of achievements, then stay away. Most of the achievements are not things you can actually earn through your own efforts. They are luck-based.

I think this is both fun and funny! I really enjoy playing! Easy, short and did I say fun?

This is so cute! I wish I had this years ago. I love all things Jane Austen and the tongue-in-cheek vibe is ridiculously fun. There's a multi-player mode so you can play locally with friends. I haven't done much with that (still in the middle of a pandemic at the time of this writing) but I'm looking forward to introducing this to all of my fellow Jane Austen friends as soon as possible. Definitely worth it for the experience!

This is a very enjoyable little game! Bordering on ASMR levels of satisfaction. The humour is on point, the music and narration are great, and so is the art. There's a lot of amusement to be found in creating different ladies and finding their matches, or playing more than one at time. If you go into it with a personality in mind for your avatar and make your choices according to that it keeps the game fresh for a long time.
