Fairly simple roguelike FPS, but hides a lot of fast paced action. Has the look and feel of a boomer shooter, with tower defense style play and roguelite mechanics in-game for guns, power-ups, and stats, and then permanent upgrades and modifiers from run currency and achievements. On the tower defense side, a big part of the game is managing your resource intake (metal), to be able to upgrade your turrets, fix them, fill their ammo, and pay for global upgrades, without letting too many through to your module. Overall fun time. Couple things I'd like see: - Game has jumping and dashing. I never found a situation where I needed to jump during combat. Only ever had to jump over my own turrets cause I didn't leave enough space. - Maps with land formations that block pathing and bottlenecks and such. There's some space capsules on the maps, but more varied paths would be great. - Reverse tower defense maps, where instead of defending your module from a horde, you're fighting your way to your module and then defending some. - Weapons that aren't primary guns, like grenades or mines. - Jetpack - Drone style turret that stays with you. - More maps in general and randomized ones. - Endless Mode? - Possible something above may exist, as I havent played enough to get the 3 upgrades that cost 1 million each. Bought the game and cleaned it out in 2 sittings after sitting through 10 minutes of Vinny Vunesauce playing it and getting gauded by him blowing chunks at videogames, Again. A very refreshing palette cleanser from the usual """""action roguelike""""" sea of garbage, where you are actually playing a real game that isn't mind numbing for the initial 7 minutes and devolves into a firework show at the 20 minute mark. You play as Engineer Tf2:tm: with your Several Sentries and Dispenser and shoot down waves of enemies. Smack gray rocks to get metal, blue rocks to get your Level Ups:tm: and pick your upgrades, but it's explicitly designed not to let you snowball. For once, the game actually wants to be played. Levels take around ~11 minutse to clear, and there's 9 of them (18 including EX mode), and I personally can appreciate a game that respects the player's time. The game isn't terribly long and you might doubt the worth of its price tag, but I've had a lot of enjoyment over 8 hours for my 10 bucks, which is more than any 2.99 slop has given me. Pretty Good.
I saw Vinny play this game and I decided to download it cause I knew I could play better, The game has a really good game play loop and I'm looking forward to doing more.
"Astroswarm" offers a straightforward gaming experience, comprising 10 levels with a retro aesthetic that pay homage to celestial bodies within our solar system, culminating in a challenging boss encounter.
Blending elements of roguelite and classic shooter genres, its mechanics are refreshingly simple yet engaging. Each level presents a unique environment inspired by its corresponding celestial entity, accompanied by escalating enemy encounters. While the foes become more diverse as you progress, they maintain a consistent level of simplicity throughout. The game's core gameplay loop revolves around defending your ship through five waves of enemies, with each successful defense granting rewards. This tower-defense aspect adds an additional layer to the boomer shooter experience. In summary, "Astroswarm" fulfills its intended premise, offering enjoyable gameplay without groundbreaking innovation or narrative depth. A very straightforward blend of tower defense and FPS with roguelike elements, ASTROSWARM pits you against your former zombified astronaut compatriots where your goal is to kill enough of them then survive for the take off. In this game, you have two resources: metals to build and upgrade your buildings, and exp for getting weapons and "upgrading" yourself. Spending those resources properly is the key for your long term survival. Aside from your lonesome, you'll have the aid of your own machines in your quest of exterminating those zombified astronauts. In addition to the roguelike upgrades you can buy during an ongoing mission, there are also permanent upgrades you can get before starting a mission which can be a major game changer, as well as unlocking more weapons and buildings variants as you proceed. The early games when you basically start with nothing are a tad problematic, and you'll certainly fail a few tries until you've got enough perma upgrades (and experience with the game) to bounce back. The game also have optional modifiers which you can toggle as you please to provide yourself more challenges, changes to suit your particular playstyle or merely cosmetics. Want to go pure gun blazing instead of babysitting your buildings? Gunslinger is the perk you're looking for. If you prefer tower defense, Engineer will be your friend. Yes, I'm well aware of TF2 references there (afterall, part of inspiration of this game is the MvM gamemode in TF2 when playing as Engi). Note that when boomer shooter is mentioned here, it's not just the art style. If you really want that fast paced action, you sure as hell can as the shooting mechanic and movement really land itself closely to the recent DOOM games (aside from having to reload for most of the weapons). All in all, I had my share of fun out of this game. If horde survival mixing with tower defense, boomer shooter and roguelike elements is your thing, give this game a try.
A simple FPS/tower defense type game. That said, still enjoyable. You can max everything out in a handful of hours so don't expect too much replay-ability in its current state. Would love to see more types of buildings in the future. I'm happy with the content for the ~$10 I paid.
I really like the retro style graphics and the roguelite upgrades but game balance is a bit questionable in my opinion. In the very beginning I found it extremely difficult to fight back the waves but once I got a single auto upgrade building unlock and realized you can use that on a metal supplier at the start to produce more metal than you need, the game became 100x easier. Without that steady flow of metal, you have to run back and forth juggling trying to mine more across the map and keeping your turrets ammo topped off so your base stays defended which is a lot more difficult than just standing still by the metal supplier. Aside from that though there’s plenty of enemy and tower variety and I had a really fun time blasting my way through the planets. The game has a bunch of unlockable modifiers as well which should greatly help replayability. Overall a solid blend of the roguelite and tower defense genres with a splash of boomer shooter. I think it’s worth trying out! Gameplay: https://youtu.be/GDRsLLlgOJ8
At last, I can play as the Engineer without the risk of letting my entire team down. But seriously, this game hits all the right notes for me. It has an addictive gameplay loop that'll have you saying "just one more run" long after you should've stopped for the day.
Enjoyed it a lot. I have like 2 unlocks left til i 100% the game. Got about half way through expert mode. I would say its worth the money, just wish there were a few more upgrades, unlocks, Etc. added to the game. Overall a good buy. 7/10
