It is what it says on the tin: a charming, no-frills retro shooter. In the modern era, where games are often bloated by questionably-worthwhile systems for the sake of content, Astro Attack has you just jumping in and shootin' some guys. Astro Attack is a nice palette cleanser if you're not sure what to play next or just want a bit of mindless fun. It runs great on Steam Deck as well. For the price point, it's hard to have a lot of complaints!
Simple gameplay and a nice homage to classic titles with unlockable ships. The game is basic and straightforward to play. You simply need to hold the left mouse button down and move the ship around the screen. There is no need to worry about shooting since it is automatic. All you have to watch out for are opposing bullets, as a single hit will finish your run. Enemies move from top to bottom. There is no consequence if you miss an enemy; they will simply disappear through the bottom of the screen. The playing area is limited to the middle of the screen, and the sides display a static image. The entire thing resembles an arcade machine. The goal is to get as far as possible while collecting points and coins. Enemies shoot quicker, have more health, and come with a shield the longer you live. Aside from cash, enemies will drop various power-ups that can provide you a shield or one of multiple weapons (triple shot, faster shot, etc.). Power-ups have a limited lifespan and can only be used for a brief period of time. However, you can extend this by obtaining the same or another power-up that compliment each other. So you can have fast triple-shots. You complete missions to get the most coins. There are always three available missions, and each one is replaced by a new one when completed. Missions repeat because there are only a few. Coins are then redeemed for toy packs, which unlock one of over 80 ships. Sadly, the game is grindy if you want. The more you have unlocked, the more dupes you’ll waste your money on. You can also buy a specific ship, but it costs a lot more. Ships come in all kind of shapes, and some surprising ones that you don’t even expect. Almost every ship reminds of a classic title. Although new ships don’t change the main gameplay, there’s still a very nice reason for trying each one; the selected ship changes the look of enemies, poweups, and bullets. There are still a lot of repetitions because it’s hard to be unique for all of them, but there’s enough variety.
Not bad. But i hope for Updates, with more Game Modes, more different Missions and more good old game Ships. (look at my avatar, you see it ;)
A great little game! Played awesome on mobile, now its on PC!
Very simple but fun arcade shooter! Used to be a mobile game but it's easy to tell some love went into bringing it to PC, rather than just porting it and calling it a day. Also runs great on the Steam Deck! Gameplay is simplistic and easy to get used to - can you move a mouse? Cool, you can play this! Can get quite challenging as you progress, so aiming for the leaderboard is harder than you'd think - gives you something to strive for. All the ships you can unlock are super cool and unique, and basically all of them are neat little references - I want them all! All in all, a great little way to pass the time and just chill out for a bit.
I was SOOO chuffed to see Astro Attack on Steam. I played it obsessively on my phone and was very sad when it went away. But now my life has meaning once again. I adore the graphics, the nods to classic games (Doom style ones being my favourite) the gorgeous pixelart ships. The "prize in your cereal" idea for unlocking new ships is a lovely touch. It has that warm fuzzy nostalgia vibe. But its not just the "back in my day...." rose tinted glasses-ness it holds up because of all the thought and artistic decisions that were done with love and not just "because retro" At least that is how I feel about this game. Something so simple has provided me with such joy, Im gushing a little here, but I really really dig this game!
