This is not a card game. It's a cast-spells-when-you-have-mana game. This isn't a bad thing at all, but it is not what I was expecting. There is no deck, no discard, no hand, and no drawing cards. What the game calls drawing cards really is giving you random spells from a specific magic type that, from that point forward, are always available if you have the power to cast them. This "drawing cards" mechanic doesn't even occur in the campaign... you have set spells the entire time, with no choice on what you can cast, what magic types to power up, or anything else except which of a couple branches to take first. The campaign is about 90 missions long if you do them all. It took me about 5 1/2 hours to go through it. Some parts were a decent challenge and took me a couple tries... most of it was fairly easy. The campaign plays like a puzzle, with just about nothing random about it except the choices the enemy side makes. I haven't tried it again in hard, might come back later for that. For a $4.99 game, I feel this is fine, though I was hoping for a longer game. The random 1v1 matches are significantly less interesting. Internet mode is locked still, for whatever reason, not that I care for PvP. I would give this game a 6/10.
If you like card puzzles, try the game, this is NOT a deck builder however, as the story mode give you a specific and fixed hand of cards you can choose from and the free battles against AI have both decks (your enemy and yours) randomized. There are youtube videos out there to help if you are having trouble with the battle-puzzles during the campaign and after you are done with that, you should be skilled enough to try winning against the Archmage difficulty AI for the achievements. I liked my time on this indie old card battle game, its not perfect but It was money well spent.

This was one of my favorite games on iPad. So glad to see it on steam. There's a few areas that could use a bit more polish, but it doesn't take away from the amazing fun. Highly recommended!

It's card based game, where you have 3 spaces to place frontliners and 2 for backliners. Each turn you gain one of each 5 elements which you can use to play exactly ONE card per turn. Also don't die. That's it. However, even with such simple mechanics the campaign mode (and the main mode this review is about) can be very difficult (especially so on Hard). In fact, each battle feels like a super tightly designed puzzle and most of them require several, sometimes, dozen of attempts before you figure out the perfect order of actions to win you the day. There is a gorgeous map, but unfortunately, the game is VERY linear that only sometimes provides you with a side route next to the main one. However, these side routes often lead to major upgrades/cards without which it feels nearly impossible to continue the main path. The biggest critique I have is that the campaign mode uses only a small pool cards available in the game overall. Card rewards are unbelievably scarce so most of the time you will play with the same dozen of cards. Aside from the campaign, there is VS AI and hotseat mode where you can play with the full set of cards. It looks like the developer wanted an online mode as well, but at the time it's not available.
The positive
+ Surprising depth for such a simple mechanic. You get one card per turn, which means every action you take can be extremely impactful. +Challenging (on Hard). If you like a good challenge, this is it. Due to the small amount of cards in the campaign, every combat feels like a puzzle that will require you to think and experiment. + Plays super fast. Perfect to be played in short bursts, or long ones if you're very persistent.
The neutral
* It has hotseat and vs AI mode. There are pretty cool cards in the game, and I can see people having fun playing it against friends (don't play with sore losers though). * Difficulty option is a bit weird. Campaign has 2 difficulty options, normal and hard. However, these are separated, so if you find out Hard is a bit too difficult, you will have to start the campaign over on Normal.
The negative
- Small number of cards in the campaign. After almost 15h, I had about 18 cards and that's fairly near the end. I wish there was more card variety here, and ideally, a little bit of deck building.
Conclusion:
If you like puzzle like combat and a good challenge along with a fast paced gameplay, Astral Towers is a clear recommendation, especially considering its price. Recommended.
Extremely well thought out card game. The storyline is not very extensive and the English translation of the text is not perfect, but the essence of the game makes a lot right with its 89 campaign levels. Playing it on the highest difficulty level truly is hard, so this can offer quite a challenge. Arguably it can also be seen as a puzzle game (which requires very specific moves at the right time to win at the highest difficulty level). What is nice is that playing against AI or locally offers rather different mechanics for greater replay value (but keep in mind that the ability to play via the internet against other players seems disabled).

Tedious puzzle game with a random chance of having your solutions work. For $.50 it is worth it as a time waster. If you spend more than that you are over paying for what you get.
Astral Towers is an ancient 2011 card battler (not one of those nasty P2W ones though) with a fantasy theme where you sort out your cards, fight 1v1 duels... think of this is as Magic the Gathering from Temu. Being a 15 year old game, there's a slew of defects, despite being "Remastered" this is ancient and plays badly. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. For gameplay purposes, because the user interface for this game is mostly just 2D static text/images... it might as well be a web page. It's functionally no different from a browser game. And we all know, Steam isn't here to compete with Chrome and Firefox. If the game can be done in a web browser, it's just not rich or compelling enough to appeal to serious gamers on PC. The game is comprised of somewhat mediocre hand drawn 2D illustrations instead of professional looking 3D game assets. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget to arrange someone who can create graphical assets properly, or lack of talent. Regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is very low, beneath what PC gamers have come to expect in this era of cutting edge photorealistic 3D graphics. At least it's not pixel "art", but if you're looking for contemporary, immersive visuals, this game is a fail. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. The controls can't be customised because the game has such a dumbed down, simplified interface that it's just point and click stuff like a browser/Flash game. The fact that the interface is this dumbed down might be seen as a problem in itself, however... this is a fairly shallow experience if you're the kind of gamer that likes to play games with deep, rich control schemes and interaction. You'll get none of that here. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 7 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 130,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 130,000+ games on Steam? Astral Towers has the almost comically optimistic (if it wasn't so sad) price of around $5 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam. For comparison, the $5 asking price for this game could get you games like "Killing Floor 2", "Deus Ex: Human Revolution" or "Shadow Warrior". Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this.
Profile Features Limited! Valve have marked this game as "Profile Features Limited" at the time of this review. This is usually caused by poor sales figures and low community acceptance for the game (to date). Until this status changes, this game will not give you +1 to your Game Collector badge count, appear in profile achievements or any other Steam meta-accomplishments, nor can it be displayed in some profile showcases. If these factors are important to you, it may be worth holding off before buying this game.
