Archaic relict from a time when VR had no motion controllers. Does not worth revisiting nowadays. Gameplay of climbing with controller's buttons and stick feels very awkward and not immersive at all. I do not understand why people (myself included) liked playing The Climb back in the day. Visuals are actually decent, just like they usually were on PC VR before Quest release :) Also the game only runs when its window is in focus, making it a pain to even start properly. Works on Reverb G2 with Xbox Controller
Ascent Spirit is a stark, physically demanding virtual reality experience that places immersion and tension above traditional gameplay comforts. Developed by Ebim Studio and published by Plug In Digital, the game is built around a singular, almost uncompromising idea: survival through ascent. Rather than offering a broad range of mechanics or a richly layered progression system, it narrows its focus to the act of climbing itself, using VR to translate physical strain, fear of falling, and isolation into the core emotional drivers of the experience. The narrative setup is minimal but effective in establishing urgency. You play as a French legionnaire in the early 1940s whose mission goes disastrously wrong when a hot air balloon is blown off course and crashes near a sacred Himalayan mountain. Stranded at altitude with limited equipment and time working against you, the only option is to climb. This premise is not expanded through lengthy exposition or dialogue; instead, it serves as a backdrop that reinforces the feeling of desperation and solitude. The story is told largely through context and environment, allowing players to project their own emotions onto the climb rather than being guided by overt storytelling. Gameplay revolves entirely around VR-based climbing mechanics. Using motion controllers, players physically grab, swing, and plant ice axes into rock and ice, making each movement deliberate and consequential. There is no abstraction here—every mistake feels personal, every successful reach feels earned. The game constantly asks you to manage stamina, positioning, and momentum, creating moments of genuine tension as you hang over sheer drops or struggle to secure a foothold. This approach makes Ascent Spirit feel less like a conventional game and more like an endurance test, where persistence and physical coordination are as important as mental focus. The environment plays a crucial role in shaping the experience. The mountain is vast, cold, and unforgiving, with steep faces, narrow ledges, and unpredictable hazards such as wind and falling ice. The developers’ use of real-world topographic data lends the terrain a sense of authenticity, and even though the visuals are relatively simple by modern standards, the scale and emptiness of the surroundings create a powerful atmosphere. Looking down into the clouds below or up toward distant ridgelines can evoke genuine vertigo, especially in VR, reinforcing the sense that nature itself is the primary antagonist. One of the more interesting aspects of Ascent Spirit is its multiple endings, which are influenced by how you approach the climb and the decisions you make along the way. This adds a modest layer of replayability, encouraging players to attempt different routes or pacing strategies in pursuit of alternate outcomes. However, the core gameplay remains largely unchanged between playthroughs, meaning that replay value depends heavily on how much enjoyment you derive from the climbing mechanics themselves rather than from narrative variation. Despite its ambitions, the game is not without notable shortcomings. The experience can feel repetitive, as the primary interaction rarely evolves beyond climbing and repositioning. Precision issues with VR tracking or controller responsiveness can quickly break immersion, turning tense moments into frustrating ones. For players who are not already comfortable with VR locomotion or physically demanding interactions, fatigue can set in quickly, making longer sessions difficult. The lack of variety in mechanics or environmental interactions further amplifies these issues, especially for players expecting a broader adventure experience. Overall, Ascent Spirit is a highly specialized VR title that will strongly appeal to a narrow audience. Its strengths lie in its atmosphere, physicality, and commitment to making the climb itself the story. It does not cater to players seeking action, variety, or traditional progression, nor does it soften its challenge to accommodate casual play. For those interested in immersive, physically engaging VR experiences that prioritize sensation and emotional tension over polish and breadth, Ascent Spirit offers a raw and memorable ascent. For everyone else, its limited scope and demanding execution may feel more punishing than rewarding. Rating: 5/10
YO
