About
Apricity is a top-down shooter designed to be played with friends.
When you deal damage, you build Heat, and at 100% Heat you become HOT, increasing your attack speed. After a few seconds of not dealing damage, your Heat drops to 0 almost instantly. Reloading (reloading is just the term for a special action, you can fire your primary weapon infinitely) conserves Heat and recharges your abilities, unless you are injured, in which case your Heat is expended to rapidly heal you.
Importantly, enemies drop orbs on death that heal you and recharge your abilities, often forcing players into a choice: do I back off and reload, or just keep shooting and hope I can heal from the orb?
Apricity has 11 character classes. Each class has a different weapon, passive, and two activated abilities.
Classes interact with each enemy type and item differently, and each class has a special relationship with the Heat system.
Apricity has two gamemodes. The first is Adventure, in which players make choices in a text adventure in between combats. Winning combats equals success in the text adventure. The ultimate goal is to destroy Catrapos.
The second is Endless, a simple but fun score attack mode that appeals more to singleplayer users.

"Apricity" is one of literally thousands of retro top-down/twin stick shooters infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere... and I'm not kidding. Searching for "top-down shooter" on the Steam store page yields over six thousand results! Is this one of the best of those? Absolutely not. This is possibly one of the worst top-down shooters... nay, one of the worst games on Steam. It's a laughably incompetent mess. The visuals you can see in the screenshots are, unfortunately, cherry picked, and the in-game graphics are even worse. You really do control things like boxes. There was an attempt to give characters different abilities, but any effort along those lines is completely wasted when the technical execution must be a joke... I mean... nobody would seriously publish this with a straight face thinking this is what gamers expect in 2026? Right? In the modern era of high quality bleeding edge PC gaming, these kinds of flat, lazy, lackluster top-down shooters just don't cut it. This is a dead genre for a reason. Even though this is "free", it failed to attract any interest for gamers here on Steam Direct for obvious reasons. This is a multiplayer game that lacks any actual online play because the developer didn't include netcode or matchmaking. Steam has "Remote Play Together," but that isn't a real fix for the fact that PC gamers aren't sitting around a desk together to play games on one monitor. Whether the developer was too lazy or just lacked the skill to add online features, a multiplayer game without online support is a failure. The graphics here are particularly awful, it's really just a couple of sprites done in MS-Paint... seriously, so bad that it actually stands out as one of the worst looking games on Steam. Quite an accomplishment. It's a big contributor to the failure of the game to attract gamers despite having no up-front cost. Gaming is a primarily visual medium, and if developers want to succeed, they must understand that it's not an area for compromise. The developer chose not to do the job of a real game developer and create meaningful bespoke levels, narrative based gameplay progression and so on. Instead, they decided that "Procgen IS content!" and lazily tried to use procgen algorithms to create infinite, samey, repetitive, soulless levels, because that's a lot less work. As a result of this poor decision, the game gets tired and repetitive almost immediately. Developers must learn that procgen is a terrible substitute for creating real content. It should not be used as "ez-mode" for content creation, as the developer tried to do here. This was made with the godawful "GameMaker Studio" construction kit/toolset, which is popular amongst amateur developers because it handholds you through making really crap 2D games that you can publish for $100 on Steam Direct. This lets you pat yourself on the back for pretending to be a real game developer, which explains why GameMaker Studio is responsible for so much ignored garbage on Steam. GameMaker Studio has never really been used to make a truly successful game, but that doesn't stop people from trying and failing. It's a particularly bad game engine that can only be used for making low quality 2D products. Like this. You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, as the old saying goes. Another reason this particular game wasn't successful. Now on to pricing and value for gamers. This is "free" enough (not every "free" game in the "free" section is truly free, there's usually some hidden price tag), at least you won't be expected to spend any more money after you download this, but just because something is free doesn't mean it's good, and the cost of a game is more than just financial, your time is valuable too. Despite having no up-front cost, this failed to appeal to the 130 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB shows this peaked at only 4 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. This "free" game won't count toward your game collection count on your profile. With that in mind, is it something you should still download? Nope. This isn't worth downloading. There's no financial cost up-front, but you'd still be spending your time and a little hard drive space on a product that's far from the best. There's thousands of better alternatives on Steam.
the names Colourfast and Showdown have got to be pendulum references
