Talk about an overlooked gem - how does this one have barely any reviews? Combat and puzzles revolve around carrying and tossing objects, and each boss battle acts as its own sort of puzzle arena. The pixel art is colorful, charming, and has good little details put into its environments and animations. Music is nice too. But the best part of the game is its story. While the narrative is pretty light early on, it really ramps up and goes unexpected places by the end. More important than the quantity here is the obvious amount of soul and personal meaning put into the writing. There's plenty of goofy characters and dialogue too, but it's the kind of game that was made with a great message behind it, and that's the thing that really makes Applewood shine. Even though this game isn't too tough overall, the difficulty curve is solid, and some later parts can take a couple tries to get right. The game crashed on me once during a boss fight, and I had a few other bugs but nothing major. I do wish vines were easier to use. But vines are only required for optional collectibles, thankfully, so that's not a big deal. Playtime for me was 5 hours with most items collected, then an extra 2 hours for 100%. And let's not forget that this game is FREE. It apparently used to cost $6 (which is already low), but later went f2p because sales were so poor. 38 reviews at the time of writing? As the best free platformer I've found on steam, Applewood deserves so much more than this. Edit: 5 full playthroughs completed now, and the game still holds up extremely well.
This game has been a real surprise, when i found it i really did not think much of it, mostly because of the images used in the store page, but i always give games in my library a try, and that i did... Oh how glad i am, i dont think im even close to the middle of the game and it has me hooked. Some pros and cons here for you:

 PROS
Really good platforming mechanics
Godlike animation and art styles
No loading screens, everything feels fluid and like it's happening as you play
Cool story (so far)
Easy to understand controls
Really cool boss fight(s)

 CONS
None!

RANDOM STEAM GAME
I look all over Steam for random / unknown Steam games to play. This was one of the chosen titles this week! If you'd rather watch than read, you can do so here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y7nBqGv8874 [Thoughts and First Impressions] I am going to keep this short. This game is an absolute gem. The writing is on point, the puzzles / platforming is SUPRISINGLY CHALLENGING and the game is just fun. Did I mention the game is FREE? How do you honestly fault this game for anything when it literally doesn't cost you money and it will occupy a good few hours of your time. I was surprised to find out how deep the game actually was. There are tons of secrets, collectibles to get and again... surprisingly challenging gameplay for something that looked like a kid's game. TRY IT!
Overview
As a free game, I didn't expect much, but I was very surprised by the great quality of this game, the plot is amazing and surprisingly emotional, the art and music are simple but really well done and fitting to the game's atmosphere. There were also some nice references, for example the protagonist's name (which means "apple" in Japanese) and Ahura & Iman (which are references to the Zoroastrianism).
Gameplay
The game is basically a 2D platformer, the protagonist has the ability to fly for some seconds and you need to pick and throw objects to solve puzzles. While the game is not a metroidvania per se, there are some metroidvania elements, such as secret places, boss battles, and the ability to backtrack, but as the game description says, there's no real need to backtrack, unless you missed something in a previous zone.
Graphics
The game features a simple but really well done pixel art, the characters even have portraits that change according to their emotions during conversation.
Audio
It has some nice music, I specially liked how the music changed during the Ahura/Iman caves depending on whether you were inside or outside the caves. The sound effects seem fitting and well done.
Price
The game is free, but it's so good that I wish I could pay for it. I read a post explaining that the game was originally paid, but the developer decided to make it free because it wasn't getting much attention. Link: https://steamcommunity.com/app/1107470/discussions/0/1862741826500830922/
Difficulty
The game is quite easy, there are enough savepoints so you won't have too much work to return to where you were if you die, there's no need for exceptional platforming skills and the puzzles are quite simple (the music sheet puzzle may take a while, but it's optional). Note, however, that the protagonist has a stamina bar, so you can't just fly and wall jump at will, late-game also has some parts which require some timing, which can be challenging.
Duration
The game is quite short, especially if you don't want to do the optional stuff.
Replayability
You may want to play again to test different responses and choices (there are some parts where you are given choices of what to say/do).
Achievements
There are only three, you just need to get all collectables and use all of your goldberries before finishing the game to get them, quite easy and can be done on your first run.
Problems

There's a bug where a goldberry is not counted towards your goldberries count when you exit the zone immediately after getting it, but this is just a visual bug and causes absolutely no problem with the goldberry achievement.
There's no Steam Cloud save.
There's also a minor bug I experienced once, after defeating a bush darter, the animation frames of them falling were stuck in the air, exiting and coming back to the zone fixed it.
This game was fantastic, truly. It's SEVERELY underrated, I highly recommend that anyone who reads this play it. The soundtrack was superb, the gameplay was fun and charming, as was the writing and characters. This game should NOT be free, it's shockingly well put together.
Applewood
Applewood is a brilliant free game. It's a 2D platformer with physics, and things you can carry to deal physics damage to unsuspecting, weight-triggered pressure plates. Overall, it's a great little game with actual story and characters when it didn't need to include those. Straying from the norm tutorials and including it within the story and more. It's definately a game you should pick up and give an honest review on while it's free. Pros - The game functions as a game. - The character you play is interesting, as are the rest of the characters you meet throughout the game. - The story is inticing, I want to know more about this world and what's happening. - Enemies, characters and story makes sense with the environment. - Has pressure plate and throwing physics. - Has challenge which is intentional, and not because it's broken. Cons On a time crunch, will get back to this in approx 5 hours. Overall, I recommend this game. It's cute, the music is good and I don't remember find a lot wrong or difficult with this game. There is some challenging moments which are usually just an oversight by me, or they are genuinely meant to be difficult, which is good. The game is free right now and has been for quite a bit. In my mind, this game does not have enough credit for how good it is and more people should play and give an honest review about this game.
