i played the demo in 2021 and had this game on my wishlist since then. defiently worth the wait! it was so fun and the story was so good as well! if you want a game with a dark deeper story then this is the game for you.
For the most part, though, Apopia: Sugar Coated Tale is a whimsical romp through a wonderland of unique and interesting rabbits and locales. This is a game that can easily be enjoyed by the young and young at heart alike, though given its darker last act, I would highly recommend it for a family with little ones to sit down and play together. The cute cartoonish artwork, combined with puzzles and mini-games that are easy to both understand and master, plus a respectable play length for an adventure game, and you’ve got all the makings of a few nights of relaxation and fun in this entertaining journey down the, pardon the pun, rabbit hole. https://adventuregamehotspot.com/review/6278/apopia-sugar-coated-tale
This game was a joy to experience. The art style immediately grabbed me and the hints at being a darker story kept me intrigued throughout the game. It's a very simple point and click game with a few genre changes here and there, that reminds me back to the days of PC games like Freddi The Fish. It has a decent play time that's not too short or too long and it has a captivating story that really gets to you in the later half of the game. The music is hit or miss sometimes, with some tracks being very generic cartoon sounding while some are absolute bangers. Now, for my feedback. When the game tries to switch up the gameplay and pull in action sequences or other elements from other games, it does feel a bit janky. Specifically the AT-AT part. It does have moments where it glitches. I got stuck behind an invisible wall a few times. Lastly, there are a lot of grammatical errors that can make emotional moments have less impact because of how a sentence is written or punctuation errors. I can see what they were going for in the dialogue, but it definitely needs a lot of clean up and proof reading. Especially, when this game is priced at $15. Also, I personally like story twists but I can definitely see how some may not be onboard with it. Overall, I do recommend this game but it definitely needs a bit of refinement. It's a 7.5 out of 10 for me now, but if they fix the grammar and glitches. It would be an 8/10 game for me.
This is one of the perfect examples on how to make a strong story. Apopia: Sugar Coated Tale is on one hand very bright and colorful and very sweet and funny... but it also gets very deep, dark and emotional and it really works and can touch your heart. It is very well written, it plays well and has so many likeable characters with strong stories that it absolutley worth checking out. Definitely don´t miss out on this one.
English Review on bottom!
OMORIの鬱病、Psychonautsの脳内ジャック、The Talos Principle/SOMA/Citizen Sleeperの
English:
Despite its petty technical issues, I highly recommend this!
I wasn’t expecting much from this game, thinking, “There aren’t any games I’ve REALLY enjoyed lately.” but once I started playing, it spellbinded me till I saw the ending. I think the last time that happened was when I played SOMA two years ago. I could list all sorts of petty complaints, like how bad the audio mixing is, etc. but being: it’s the first game in a long time that had me completely engrossed from start to finish. and take my word for it. By the way, it takes about 5–6 hours to beat.
Pros
・Story The theme is simple yet compelling. It blends elements from OMORI’s depression, Psychonauts’ mind-hacking, and the
transhumanism
sci-fi elements of The Talos Principle, SOMA, and Citizen Sleeper—creating a unique atmosphere. If any of these three themes from those five games resonate with you, you won’t regret buying this. All the characters have distinct personalities, which is great! I think the pacing is the best I’ve experienced in any game I’ve played so far. The story consistently progresses, and with all the twists and turns, you’ll lose track of time. ・Easy-to-Understand Puzzles The difficulty is low enough that even people who are hesitant about puzzle-adventure games—often due to titles like Monkey Island—can breeze through them. With just a little thought, ・High-Quality Localization Although it’s a Hong Kong-made game, the localization (of Japanese language anyway. I did't played it on English) is flawless. Even the puns and pop culture references have been carefully localized, making it possible to immerse to the world with no issue. ・Hand-drawn graphics The world is beautifully rendered in vibrant colors, making exploration a joy—even during tense moments.
Am I one feeling e621-bait vibe on Lady Nana’s? or I'm just little bit jaded since Ivy from Deadlock gave me furry awakening?
・Beautiful animations All the animations are lively and add color to the world.
Cons
・Poor audio mixing There are occasional minor audio issues, such as the sound being too loud or the music not looping properly. I think this was particularly noticeable in the final rhythm (?) game section. ・Most minigames are a bit lame Some games are too easy, others require brute force solution to figure out how to proceeds, and they’re generally a hassle. ・Heavily compressed quality of pre-rendered cutscenes Part of this might be due to playing on a 4K monitor, but certain cutscenes suffer from issues like over-compression causing color distortion, ghosting, and simply low resolution. I used to think these kinds of issues were limited to PS3 or PS2-era games (like Spec Ops: The Line or Serious Sam 2), but I can’t help but wonder, “Is this really happening in a game from 2026?” ・Some minor plotholes Questions like “What was up with the boss’s eyes, anyway?” and “What’s the connection between Mai’s world and Yogurt?” are left hanging without unresolved. That said, BioShock Infinite struggled with lot of worse plotholes and inconsistent tones, and that game's story wasn’t a bad either. So compared to that, this story is easier to follow and more cohesive, so I actually enjoyed it more. I don’t think these story issues on Apopia are enough to be a deal breakers. ・Some of the jokes It’s not like there aren’t any good jokes at all (Personally, I did get a few laughs from various puns jokes), but the lack of subtlety in throwing out pop culture references like “I took an arrow in the knee…” felt a bit cringeworthy.
Ive had this game on my wishlist since 2023 and was incredibly excited when it came out. The art style and animation is adorable while also actively having a deep and telling story. The game is of course new and may experience some bugs but i encourage you to reach out to the game devs, they are welcoming and nice.
Eu fiquei tipo: "CARAMBA, A MIKKI É MASSA!".
I still have no idea what the title word means, but the gameplay, which is somewhere between point and click games and minigame collection built around a linear story, works just good enough to let the story, emotions, and themes shine through. Some of the minigames can get annoying, primarily the rhythm game ones where it can be unclear when exactly to hit and the one keyboard color puzzle I was stuck on for a while because the colors are too similar so I was hitting yellow instead of orange, etc.. I figured it out, but for anyone with moderate color blindness, it would be a nightmare. It's a decently strong narrative with big emotions and themes and mostly good writing. Unfortunately at this time there are many typos, words not spaced properly, and occasionally missing words that can be distracting. Notwithstanding, art and music are excellent. Overall though I'd somewhat recommend it. Also right now it doesn't have v sync so it runs at thousands of fps and has screen tearing most noticeable on cutscenes. I would hope they fix that.
This game is full of honesty and explores poignant themes. Its completely hand drawn graphics clearly reflect a labour of love, adding to its charm. It tells a story that stays with you after you’ve finished the final level. I can definitely recommend this game.
I've only just begun, but it is a very charming and stylish adventure so far. :D It is successfully capturing my imagination. With only a few reviews as of writing this, Apopia seems to be flying under the radar. So for someone who loves finding indie gems, already at this point I'm thinking this may be some treasure. Some of my favorite indie games from last year include FREERIDE and PEPPERED... (So good.) I'm hoping the Sugar Coated Tale will join their ranks. Time will tell, but I'm hyped! If you can't tell xD A proper review will come after reaching the end or coming to an unfortunate conclusion that I was wrong... But so far, so good. Seems worth it! (Only issue I've noticed, is I had to enable vsync through Nvidia control panel rather than in-game. As it does not need high fps. Unless I missed it?)
