NOT A METROIDVANIA. Despite this page stating it, this not a metroidvania. It's a level-based platformer with puzzles, powerups and a good level design. It's a GOOD level-based platformer so it gets a positive review, but it's still important to note the incorrect classification.
Antiflux
DISCLAIMER: I received this product for no cost for the purpose of reviewing. However, this does not affect my views and opinions of the game. Antiflux is a game about making it to the end of the stage and progressing to newer stages using the abilities you come across, as well as solving puzzles that are in your way. This 2D puzzle-platformer also falls under a metroidvainia category, which means that there's quite a bit of exploring and backtracking that can be done with the discovery of new abilities. This also means that there are different ways to complete puzzles depending on what abilities you choose to use. -------- Graphics: 6 / 10 The art assets are fine. Though nothing really stuck out as "amazing" to me, there is a lot of nice background scenes and terrains that look pretty cool. The art-style is suitable for the theme of the game, and there are nice visuals when using skills and abilities. The background and foreground are not cluttered, which is a good thing. This allows the player to focus on the objects that are needed to progress, like; which teleporter to take, or which platforms to jump on. The game's graphics are not that demanding, meaning that most cards and CPUs should run the game smoothly. -------- Sound: 6 / 10 The Antiflux soundtrack is quite nice. The melodies range from calming and soothing ambient sounds to more intense or upbeat tracks. You can listen to the OST for free on the developer's Soundcloud page. The sound assets are fine and none of the sound effects or background music get repetitive unless you spend a prolonged period of time within the stage. Although none of the music in the game really grabbed me, it still wasn't bad. -------- Mechanics: 7 / 10 The mechanics of the game are really solid, and this is where the game shines. Like many games in this genre, you start off with no real abilities, and as you progress, you gain new skills. Using these skills, you can progress even further and overcome obstacles. There are many obstacles such as enemy robots that move in a certain way, portals you and the enemy can use, different platforms/boxes, jump pads, teleporters and lasers. I\'m sure there are more challenges and objects as the game continues on. The puzzle element of the game gets more and more difficult as you progress and really makes you think hard sometimes. You instantly die if you''re hit by a laser or enemy so you have to plan your moves carefully. There are also some obstacles that change the level permanently (until you die or reset the level of course). The puzzles are designed well and give you a satisfying feeling once you complete them. -------- Personal Final Remarks: Antiflux is one of those games that I feel like; if you try it, and then complete a puzzle, you'll continue to crave that satisfying feeling of accomplishment. It could keep you playing for longer than you expect. Despite this, puzzle-platformers are not games that I enjoy very much. Probably since I'm awful at puzzle games in general and I get frustrated easily. So although this game might not be for me, I could see how many others would enjoy it. It also keeps track of the time it took you to complete certain stages within the game itself, so it's also a game for speed runners to take part in. Thanks to the Devs for giving me the opportunity to review the game, as well as anyone who took this review into consideration, I hope it helped.
A Puzzle Platformer
https://youtu.be/mDgS6Su9KtU + Nice movement controls along with double jumps and dashing + The game is filled with a large variety of different puzzles, many of which involve pre-planning and the use of many different teleporters to complete. It feels a bit like Portal in that sense, and can be quite rewarding to solve. + Visually the game looks pretty good with nicely themed underground levels that feel mysterious - Camera Problems while using an Xbox One controller. Not sure if it effects all gamepads, but this issue prevented me from being able to use a controller which was unfortunate. - Sort of lacking a good story / character development. I had no idea where I was going or what the objective was besides get to the end of the level. - There are many gaps that will lead to a spike trap if you fall down them without first pausing the game to pan the camera around. Sort of a mundane task that you will find yourself doing quite often. ~ Just a personal note, but I felt like this game could have been improved if it had some type of combat system and enemies to fight against, but I suppose you can't expect much at this price point.
Antiflux is a softcore precision platformer, featuring skill upgrades and interesting puzzle elements. Now let me explain that. Precision platformers require you to jump, double jump, slide, etc at exact points, e.g. a gap that in order to pass you need to maximize the distance your double jump can cover after sprinting towards it, usually most players will die many times trying. Softcore precision platformer is something similar but gives you a bigger space for error thus you having greater chance for success. Your objective is to reach the exit of each room though a series of obstacles and objects that can help you (portals, jump pads, boosters, switches) using your skills and any upgrades you get while playing. As for the light puzzle elements, the game does have interesting puzzles but mostly in the forms of traps, because if you do something wrong you will have to start over, either from the beginning of the level or the last checkpoint you activated, however the levels are not that big for this feature to become an annoyance. pros: -The visuals are great, taking into account that this game was made for mobile, you will not get confused towards what you see or what you can use in order to reach the exit. Also the animations are clean both for your character and the enemies you will encounter. -The controls are solid and easy to grasp, supporting both controller and keyboard. -The music is great, chilling for the majority of the game it will complement the non-killing nature of the game. -Level design for the majority is great, you will get the feeling that each part is planed for some reason and at higher levels where the game gets more complex, that feeling will intensify as you go though each of these points. Each and every level will use your skills to the fullest and each time you get an upgrade the next levels will immediately use it! The puzzles are great, for a platformer, and will complement the softcore precision of the game by being mostly smartly designed traps, meaning that if you do something wrong you have to start over. -The mechanics start with basic skills, such as double jumping and dashes, and evolve as you play, adding more to the games level complexity by allowing you to blink though walls or freeze all enemies for a while and some other stuff. -It is a nice experience for any platformer fun out there and it can a good challenge for any speedruner fan, as the game has an integrated timer and doing everything correctly on a run gives a feeling of fluid speed in the game! cons: -Sadly the game felt short enough for me, mostly because just as you start feeling you got the grasp of the latest upgrade you either get the next or, finally, the game ends. Also there are a few filler levels, either to progress the story, or as tutorials for any new power you acquire. It could definitely use more levels as I can't praise it enough for the level design, using your skillset to the fullest! -It could get a tremendous value boost by adding an editor. -The only sour part of the mechanics, and not necessarily a negative, is that the freeze power usage felt forced at specific parts. -There are a few minor bugs, such as blinking into a wall, but given the small length of each level it felt negligible. -Lastly while I felt it promoted being a speedrun challenge, it does not back it up with any form of leaderboards I believe that Antiflux is definitely worth its value but it could be a lot better with some effort. ------------------------------------------- This game was given to me by the steamified group.
Not bad! A bit short perhaps, but I felt it was good after the first levels. So yes, it starts off a bit clunky, but as you obtain more skills (game mechanics) it improves greatly. Let's just say the price is fair.
