Animallica is an unusually ambitious survival sandbox that takes the familiar post-apocalyptic formula and gives it a conservation-focused purpose. Rather than making survival the sole objective, the game places the player in the role of the last survivor of a conservation center after a devastating virus has pushed much of Earth's wildlife toward extinction. Starting with little more than scavenged supplies, the larger goal is to preserve surviving species while establishing a functioning refuge. Animallica Games Studio serves as the developer, and the project is associated with the same studio as its publisher. The concept immediately distinguishes the experience from survival games built almost entirely around fighting, looting, and expanding personal power. The survival component remains important, however. The world contains mutated creatures and hostile human raiders, forcing the player to think about weapons, equipment, shelter, food, water, and other necessities. Gathering materials gradually feeds into an extensive crafting system, and exploration becomes essential because useful resources are distributed across numerous environments. Combat provides danger during these expeditions, although it is more of a supporting mechanic than the game's greatest strength. Encounters can feel rough compared with more polished action-survival titles, but they successfully create enough risk to prevent resource gathering and wildlife rescue from becoming completely peaceful routines. Exploration is considerably more interesting because the world incorporates dramatically different biomes. African savannahs, mountainous Alpine areas, Egyptian deserts, and Asian-inspired gardens contribute to a sense of traveling through a fragmented version of the planet rather than wandering around one repetitive wilderness. Players can explore on foot, ride horses, and make use of an abandoned hot-air balloon. The diversity gives scavenging a stronger sense of discovery, with new areas providing different scenery, dangers, resources, and animals to locate. Wildlife preservation is where the game develops its strongest identity. Animals affected by disease cannot simply be collected. They need to be tranquilized, cured, and tamed, after which the player can decide how they should be handled. Some can be released, while others can remain within zoo-like enclosures or larger sanctuary environments. This creates an appealing connection between exploration and settlement construction. Discovering another animal is not merely about completing a collection; it can encourage players to expand their refuge and provide appropriate spaces for the creatures they have rescued. Building is consequently more meaningful than constructing a conventional survival base. Players can create substantial settlements containing crafting facilities and furnished structures, but the game does not insist upon one particular approach. A player interested primarily in wildlife can remain relatively nomadic and use crafting stations located throughout the different regions. Someone who enjoys construction can instead spend considerable time developing an elaborate permanent settlement. The lack of rigid linear progression makes experimentation easier because gathering, building, crafting, and collecting can be prioritized according to personal preference. Trading complements these systems without making scavenging irrelevant. Merchants are scarce, but they can offer useful equipment, ingredients, and even rare animals. Since many purchasable resources can also be discovered or crafted, money often becomes a way of saving time. This creates worthwhile decisions when a single missing material is preventing the completion of an important item. Searching for it may lead to additional discoveries, while purchasing it allows the player to immediately return to another objective. The game's greatest weakness is that its impressive breadth is accompanied by noticeable roughness. It attempts survival, crafting, combat, hunting, animal management, trading, exploration, settlement construction, and open-world progression simultaneously. Not every component receives equal refinement, and movement, combat, interfaces, or environmental interactions can occasionally feel less polished than the underlying ideas deserve. Its presentation also lacks the consistency of a larger-budget production. Players who require highly refined mechanics may therefore find the imperfections difficult to overlook. At the same time, these shortcomings do not erase the appeal of the overall gameplay loop. Exploring leads to resources and animals, resources support crafting and construction, construction improves the sanctuary, and the growing sanctuary gives the player another reason to continue exploring. There is a pleasant sense of transforming a devastated world into something productive. The conservation theme makes routine survival activities feel more purposeful because progress is represented not only through stronger equipment but also through the collection and protection of wildlife. Steam Deck compatibility deserves some caution. The Steam store currently lists the game as Windows-only and does not display an official Steam Deck Verified or Playable compatibility rating. This means it should not be treated as officially supported for the handheld. Since it is a Windows title, running it on Steam Deck would depend on Proton compatibility, and players may encounter control, interface, performance, or other compatibility issues. Anyone specifically purchasing or installing it for Steam Deck should therefore approach it as an unofficial experience rather than expecting guaranteed plug-and-play operation. Animallica ultimately succeeds more through personality and scope than polish. Its combination of post-apocalyptic survival and animal conservation remains distinctive, while the freedom to build settlements, rescue wildlife, explore contrasting environments, trade, craft, fight, or live more nomadically provides substantial sandbox variety. Mechanical rough edges keep it from reaching the quality of the strongest survival games, but players willing to tolerate independent-production imperfections can find a surprisingly imaginative world underneath them. The satisfaction of gradually turning a desperate struggle for survival into a functioning wildlife sanctuary is ultimately what gives the experience its character and makes its ambitious collection of systems worth exploring.
Its a yes and no for me on recommending it why im saying no is at the start is very hard to walk though, spawn in let to find random notes? if they tell you how to play the game, most of the notes are just your character having friends since all they can do is wright letters since phones dont work anymore. saving animals? you would have to sit around trying to figure out everything since there is pretty much no walk through, your just thrown in the game. wolfs are super aggressive, real life territorial yes but not man eating aggressive that you have 8? out running your horse and kill you they will chance you down tell you kill them, real life wolfs are shy not hostile unless your missing with pups or in there hunting spots. these ones in game? from other planet they can out run a horse... says its full release i think it still needs some TLC to make it smoother for people starting out, kinda just thrown into a hot mess of mess. this is coming from 5hrs into it and i still know nothing on what to do in the game, other then to loot that is common in all games, and run out of stuff and get about 2shots hits in before almost dying. it tells you to "save animals" but they want you to leave areas, not even sure if you can return to a place if you leave, was never explained so why build a base to just say bye to it...
Great concept but the game needs to be improved upon
