This game has big "plot" and I like it.
Animal Trail ☆ Girlish Square is a bright, cheerful, and delightfully absurd blend of magical girl fantasy and idol drama, a visual novel that embraces its dual nature with sincerity and energy. Developed by Whirlpool and published by Sekai Project, it follows the story of Taiga Nakamori, an ordinary young man whose uneventful life in Akihabara takes an unexpected turn when he discovers that his favorite underground idol group, Animal Trail ☆ Girlish Square, are in fact magical girls from another world. Their mission is to collect a mystical energy known as “Pal,” which is generated through human joy and excitement—an amusingly convenient connection to their career as idols. This marriage of show business and supernatural purpose forms the heart of the game’s concept, and while it may sound whimsical, it serves as an affectionate parody of both genres that never takes itself too seriously. The tone of Animal Trail ☆ Girlish Square is lighthearted from beginning to end. It revels in its own ridiculousness while still managing to deliver moments of charm and warmth. The heroines—each one marked by their animal-ear motifs and their distinct personalities—embody familiar archetypes from both idol fiction and magical girl narratives. They struggle to find success as performers while secretly defending the balance of the worlds, and the way these two goals overlap often leads to comical situations and exaggerated emotional beats. The protagonist’s role as their fan-turned-manager adds another layer of humor and wish fulfillment, as he becomes both a caretaker and a confidant to these extraordinary girls. Beneath all the sparkle and silliness, there’s an underlying sincerity about teamwork, motivation, and the pursuit of dreams that gives the story just enough heart to keep it from being hollow. Visually, the game is a feast for anyone who enjoys vibrant, high-quality anime art. Whirlpool’s artists fill the screen with colorful characters, cute chibi-style expressions, and lavish CG illustrations that make every scene pop. The character designs by Shiromochi Sakura stand out immediately, each idol-magical girl hybrid having a unique charm that fits her personality, from energetic and impulsive to shy and determined. The attention to detail in costume design reinforces the game’s idol sensibilities, while the use of lighting and soft palettes adds to its magical atmosphere. The production values are surprisingly high for a kinetic novel, with full voice acting for the heroines and a crisp interface that makes reading effortless. There’s also a gallery mode and the usual suite of visual novel extras, which let players revisit favorite scenes or illustrations, a nice addition for those who want to enjoy the artistry beyond the story itself. Because Animal Trail ☆ Girlish Square is a kinetic visual novel, it follows a strictly linear narrative with a single ending. There are no branching choices or alternate routes to explore, which makes the experience feel like reading a light novel or watching an OVA rather than playing a traditional choice-driven game. This structure can be both a strength and a weakness. On one hand, the story flows smoothly without interruptions, allowing the pacing to stay consistent and focused on character dynamics and comedic timing. On the other, it limits player engagement, especially for those accustomed to visual novels that encourage replaying different routes for multiple outcomes. The fixed structure suits the tone of the story, though, as it allows the writers to deliver a tight, self-contained narrative rather than juggling divergent plotlines. It’s designed to be consumed in one or two sittings, emphasizing mood and charm over complexity. Narratively, the game thrives on its balance of humor and sincerity. The magical girl elements are treated with the same over-the-top enthusiasm as the idol performance sequences, creating a sense of thematic symmetry that’s both endearing and ridiculous. Each chapter oscillates between the sparkle of stage life and the chaos of magical battles, with the idols channeling their powers through song, dance, and pure positivity. It’s not a deep or emotional story, but it’s earnest in its delivery and self-aware in its comedy. Taiga’s perspective as an otaku thrust into the management of an idol group also serves as a playful nod to the culture surrounding idol fandom. The narrative pokes fun at obsessive fan devotion while also celebrating it, painting Taiga as a genuine believer in the girls’ dreams rather than just a self-insert protagonist. His enthusiasm becomes a mirror for the player’s own engagement with the world. While the game’s length and limited structure prevent it from reaching the emotional heights of longer visual novels, it compensates with an infectious sense of joy. The music, which naturally takes center stage in a story about idols, captures the upbeat tone of the narrative with catchy, pop-inspired tracks that complement the colorful visuals. The voice performances are lively and full of personality, helping each heroine stand out and making the interactions feel more dynamic. The localization from Sekai Project is clean and easy to follow, preserving the humor and rhythm of the Japanese dialogue while keeping the tone accessible to English-speaking audiences. In terms of technical performance, the game runs smoothly with minimal load times, customizable settings, and support for multiple languages, making it user-friendly and approachable for players new to the genre. Animal Trail ☆ Girlish Square isn’t trying to be revolutionary. It’s not a deep, philosophical exploration of identity, nor does it attempt to subvert its genre conventions. Instead, it’s a love letter to the kind of colorful, upbeat, and slightly ridiculous stories that define anime and visual novels at their most lighthearted. It knows exactly what it is—a short, polished, and playful experience about animal-eared idols who double as magical girls—and it delivers on that promise without hesitation. For fans of cute characters, charming art, and easygoing narratives that prioritize style and sweetness over depth, it’s an easy recommendation. It’s the kind of visual novel that exists to make you smile, and while it may not linger in your mind for long after the credits roll, it leaves behind a pleasant glow—an uncomplicated joy not unlike the “Pal energy” its characters seek to collect. Rating: 7/10
Great CGs.
