The puzzles were too random, and the ending didn't make sense, in a way that was too sad without a real message
Am I? is a small indie adventure/casual game about Laika, a space-faring protagonist sent into the void after launch. You explore surreal asteroids, meet odd characters, and solve puzzles as you try to make sense of your situation — blurring boundaries between reality, identity, and existence. Gameplay is centered on exploration and simple point-and-click interactions with environments and characters. The hand-drawn art and oddball tone give the experience some charm, but the puzzle design and narrative pacing are fairly light, and the overall structure can feel disjointed at times. Reviews on Steam are mixed, with players split on how much the game’s style and story resonate. I spent about 71 minutes with Am I?, and since there are no achievements, progression felt purely narrative-driven without any meta goals. The price during sale was €1.99, making it an easy low-commitment experience. Overall, Am I? is a short, artistic little space-adventure best suited for players curious about surreal storytelling rather than deep mechanics. If you enjoy brief, quirky indie narratives and don’t mind a minimal gameplay loop, it’s worth a cheap try.
Am I? is a deeply unconventional indie adventure developed by Pixel Quail in collaboration with Gamera Interactive and published by Gamera Interactive, offering an experience that prioritizes mood, curiosity, and philosophical ambiguity over traditional structure or clear-cut progression. Rather than guiding the player through a neatly defined narrative arc, the game invites exploration of identity, existence, and perception through a surreal journey that unfolds in fragments, often leaving interpretation entirely in the player’s hands. It is a title that deliberately resists easy answers, embracing confusion and introspection as core design principles. The game places players in control of Laika, a canine astronaut drifting through a strange and fragmented cosmos after a mission gone wrong. From this starting point, Am I? quickly establishes its interest in existential uncertainty, asking not only where Laika is, but what state of being she inhabits. Is she alive, dreaming, remembered, or something else entirely? These questions are never addressed directly. Instead, the game constructs meaning through abstract environments, cryptic dialogue, and interactions with peculiar characters who seem to exist outside conventional logic. The narrative unfolds in a non-linear, dreamlike fashion, encouraging reflection rather than comprehension. Exploration is central to the experience. Players traverse a series of floating asteroids and surreal locations, each operating under its own internal logic and visual identity. These spaces are compact but densely packed with strange details, visual jokes, and subtle narrative hints. Movement between areas feels less like traveling through a physical universe and more like drifting through thoughts or memories, reinforcing the game’s introspective tone. There is rarely a clear sense of urgency, allowing players to linger, experiment, and absorb the atmosphere at their own pace. Puzzle-solving forms the mechanical backbone of Am I?, though it rarely adheres to conventional adventure game logic. Many puzzles rely on lateral thinking, experimentation, and a willingness to accept the game’s abstract rules rather than expecting real-world consistency. Some challenges are immediately satisfying, offering clever “aha” moments when patterns click into place. Others are deliberately opaque, requiring patience and a tolerance for trial and error. This unevenness can be both a strength and a frustration, depending on the player’s mindset, as the game often prioritizes thematic resonance over mechanical clarity. Visually, Am I? stands out through its hand-drawn art style, which gives the entire experience a sketchbook-like quality. Characters and environments are expressive, slightly rough, and full of personality, favoring charm and originality over technical polish. Animations are simple but effective, bringing life to static scenes without overwhelming the minimalist presentation. The art style complements the game’s themes perfectly, creating a world that feels fragile, personal, and intentionally incomplete. The game’s writing and dialogue further reinforce its surreal identity. Conversations often veer into the absurd, blending humor, melancholy, and philosophical musings in equal measure. Characters rarely explain themselves or the world around them, instead speaking in riddles or non sequiturs that hint at deeper meaning without ever spelling it out. This approach can feel alienating to players seeking clear narrative direction, but for those who enjoy interpretive storytelling, it adds depth and replay value. Sound design and music are understated but carefully chosen. Ambient tracks drift in and out, enhancing the sense of isolation and wonder without dominating the experience. Audio cues often serve emotional rather than mechanical purposes, subtly reinforcing shifts in tone or mood as players move between areas. The overall soundscape supports the feeling that the game exists in a liminal space, somewhere between reality and imagination. In terms of pacing, Am I? is deliberately slow and reflective. There are no combat sequences, time pressures, or traditional fail states, allowing players to engage with the experience on their own terms. The relatively short length works in the game’s favor, preventing its abstract ideas from becoming exhausting while leaving enough unanswered questions to linger after completion. Some players may wish for greater narrative resolution, but the lack of closure feels intentional, aligning with the game’s central themes. Ultimately, Am I? is a game that thrives on ambiguity and personal interpretation. It is not designed to entertain through spectacle or challenge alone, but to provoke thought and emotional response through its unusual structure and surreal presentation. While its abstract puzzles and opaque storytelling will not appeal to everyone, those drawn to experimental indie games, philosophical themes, and artistic risk-taking will find a distinctive and memorable experience. Am I? stands as a quiet, introspective journey that asks players not just to solve puzzles, but to reflect on what it means to exist, remember, and question one’s own place in the universe. Rating: 6/10
Honestly? I was waiting for something better. The game was kind of pointless to be honest with the "story" (if I can call that a story after all). The "puzzles" was random and you had to check some Guides or a YouTube video to find the clue, as it was hard to find or you end up walking and clicking-checking everything. It is a pitty because it could be a very good game with an interesting story. For almost 1 hour to complete this game the price is really not worth it. Better to check the game on a discount if you want it so bad or you want to help the developers to earn some cash.
