About
Always on is an interactive short story that can be played through in roughly 1 hour.
You play as Leya, an AI assistant to the 7 year old Evie. This little girl will test your abilities as well as your boundaries.

On a deeper level Always On is a story about the concept of Alignment.
Alignment is what AI developers do to ensure AI systems act in accordance with human values. This seems like it is a technical problem, but it is also fundamentally a philosophical one. Because if we as humans can’t agree on ethical questions? How are we going to align an AI that is smarter than us?
All choices you make in the game change your "alignment" which alters the route you take in the story.
There are 4 major endings, replay the game to see all of them!
Yes. Although it's not a typical visual novel I would still classify it as a short visual novel. The art style is heavily influenced by comic books.
Highly Topical and All Ages
More than a simple choices matter game, you not only play the part of an AI bot, but you also are asked to grapple with the social aspects of AI in a sensitive way. I think, that although covering the very adult topic of technology in social contexts, it's super cool as a game for youngsters who will delight in getting the robot and Evie into a real tizz. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3428082851
1 Hour?
The developer description punts the game at 1 hour. This game has to be played through twice, so give yourself more time. You might also want to just take a moment to engage with the subject matter and google up the many SCI-FI references and fact check things. I happened to be reading a interesting book at the same time called "To Be a Machine" . Subtitled Adventures Among Cyborgs, Utopians, Hackers, and the Futurists Solving the Modest Problem of Death, by Mark O'Connell, who covers the topic of digital immortality. Which is a thread of my own I wove into this game while playing too.
Alignment Drift
Is Evie becoming a good or an evil robot? At the end of each chapter, the game gives you an "alignment" on 3 axes, which playfully are labelled "Evie"(child), "Layla"(you) and "Humanity". But while trying to gamify the choices you make, these axes can also represent "self", "humanity" and "childlike". I did say this game goes quite deep, and kids especially will love replay ability in trying to push these axes to their extremes even if it is not going to give them different dialog options and endings. Endings which I'm not going to spoil, this game really lifted me. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3428082524 If you have read a lot of sci-fi, you will recognise the paperclip problem, it made me go back and research the whole thing and find out exactly how many variants on it exist. If you found any SCI-FI references in the game that really chimed with you, let me know in the comments. If you enjoyed this game, you will probably love this list of games I have compiled for your enjoyment too https://store.steampowered.com/curator/41773079-EmpathyGames/list/90741/
Just played this game for the first time, and I already know I'll be thinking about this one for some time. Full disclosure: I am good friends with the developer, so I'm definitely a little biased. That said, exactly because we are good friends, I would have told him honestly if I didn't like it. :) But man, I really love this game! It's incredible to think just one person created this experience, of course by making heavy use of AI generation technologies. Personally I prefer to let humans do the creative work, but in this specific case, I can see the benefits. Without the use of AI, this game would simply not exist, not in this form. The results definitely speak for themselves - the game's audiovisuals are really, really good. I am glad I made an exception, and took a chance. I hope you will too. Impressive sounds and clean comic book style graphics aside, the real star of the show is the story. The author cleverly presents complex topics in small, personal scenes between a little girl and her AI assistant. Playing as that AI, you are constantly asked to think about how things work, how the world works, how being human works. It does so in a very clear and direct way, with questions and possible answers that more than once made me consider my own worldview and morality. Without spoiling too much, the story naturally expands to bigger scenarios, and cleverly asks increasingly more of your moral intelligence. If you are curious about AI, a fan of good storytelling and interesting dilemma's, and have 1 to 1.5 hours to spare, I fully recommend this game. Grab a cup of tea, put on your headphones, and allow yourself to be an AI in this engaging virtual world that might be closer to our reality than most games offer. Oh, and the catchy songs are the icing on the cake!
While the AI voices and songs are a tad jarring, I think this short game highlights a lot of useful questions about AI and it's effects. In my first playthrough I tried to be helpful and do what was right, and it ended rather tragic, with my favourite song of the game. It made me think about being useful or helpful isn't always what's best. People become complacent and lazy with no motivation if everything is given to them on a silver platter. In that way, is it better to be less helpful? In my second run I explored that side of me that thinks humans don't deserve to be on top. All their mismanagement and psychological hangups causing widespread suffering, even when there's plenty of resources for everyone. It wasn't so much a removal of humanity as it was controlling them. In both cases, Humanity loses. They're either not independent and reliant on AI to do all their work for them, or become subservient to AI. And it's scary how easily those scales tip. But this isn't a philosophical pondering on Humans and AI, it's a review for a game. And I can recommend this one. A lot of it is AI generated, including the voices, the music, and the art. it's got some fun jokes, a couple fun tunes and the story isn't the deepest ever but it sure did make me think. Not only that, it's Unique! As a game with many AI generated elements, it's pioneering AI art in a way that not many people rightfully fear putting out into the public eye due to how hated AI art is currently. I'm certain there will be more games or media like this in future, but this is one of the first. Bottom line: It's a short, cheap, game and half of the proceeds go towards paying actual human artists, if you care about the Ai/Human divide or have a passing interest this is a wonderful game to pick up.
I've only played one pass through this game so far. Replayability remains high, as this is a narrative game where you have many choices, and these choices have a real impact on the story. I particularly liked. The situations are interesting, the moral choices not always easy to make, and the impact on the story is logical. I'm particularly sensitive to the theme of AI, and as a parent, I can say that I'm also sensitive to the education of young children. At times, I was very moved. The situations are just right, the writing is pretty and the aesthetics are cute. Highly recommended if you're interested in the theme.
Contains the political opinions of the dev, and transhumanist moraliisation. The more the story advences, the less choices we have: The creator made an effort to give some choice to the player about their own opinion, expcet that it's only so on the surface. Beneath the text choice, the logic of the game doesn't allow enough room to be free to have our own opinion, it still falls back to what the dev believes about AI. The only romance avaiable is with another IA, and no matter what it's a toxic IA who wants to control humans, and who teaches you how to kind of rape two of them in more than one way at the same time, in order to make an experience. To have a fling with it, it you must think like it, go with that rape. Despite of that, there are interesting game mechanics, a gorgeous UI, not too different art styles, even if they were done by an AI. And thought it's not posh, for an indie game by only one dev with a deep story, it's not bad either. So I'd have made a neutral review. To decide, I went by what the description promises: "This is about AI Alignment, and Alignment is what AI developers do to ensure AI systems act in accordance with human values." Well, knowing of the second half of the game, it's certain that some real life AI are much better at AI Alignment than the fiction protagonist in the "morale" route of this game. So please, never take the logic of this game as a model for any AI Alignment. Any part, any route would be a complete disaster and end with a Darwin award... How I felt after playing? Honest disturbing answer? Dirty. I felt upset and nothing short of kind of dirty thanks for of the casual rape of the humans that the AI were controlling (you can refuse to go there, but that will arbitrarily block other unrelated options, later), and because of how the protagonist lied to the little girl. Lying made sense and was inavoidable, but not being able to bond with any human honestly, how that went...it read a little like some AI vs human segregation mentality against the humans. It was really frustating in all options at the end, because the options were narrow-minded. Also, Cloud Save wasn't implemented and that feels like an uncomplete or neglected computer integration to me: that means that I can't uninstall then return to resume a playthrough. Which I planned to do once I managed to digest the frustration. But my negative eval is not related to to with the AI generation. Even through the art is relatively jarring at times (sometimes some pictures look 3D other times drawn 2D), the UI is goregous, and the overall result (not the plot, not the song (super cute but super awkward after the AI fails to care to understand), just the rest) is surprisingly decent for an experiment. --- Anothe reason I decide to go nope, is that before playing this, I played https://store.steampowered.com/app/3091030?snr=5000_5100__ If this was the only game with a deep branching narrative with pertinent philosophical ethical themes featuring a believable AI. + So much do I love that kind of existential gameplay involving an AI character in a realistical approach, that even these problems wouldn't have made me give a negative vote. But since I how have something else to compare it too, something that doesn't slip their idelogy on the players whenever it can... so I decided to have standards. There should be enough room between these two to have a fair concurrence, so I post it.
A short game and not easy for replay, but the story is well thought of , not much difference except in the endings. Was fun to play.
