Not surprised this didn't last long. My experience with Altspace is that the platform itself wasn't bad. But it was the moderation team that was bad. The slightest infraction to their ego's would get you banned and if you questioned anything they didn't like to be questioned you were banned. It was a decent platform, but it was run by clowns.
Unfortunate that it is shutting down, it seemed to have a solid foundation for community made content, similar to rec room, though unlike rec room, it lacked things like original pve/pvp games/quests/cash shop/player market/subscription services/support for other platforms that might've helped to diversify its content to appeal to a wider range of users and help keep it running. As far as I could tell, this was purely a VR socialising app. Marketing of paid community created content had to be done mostly outside of the game? If they had adopted a subscription service where it allowed you to display and sell your creations within an in-game store, it might've been a more financially self-sufficient project, but I don't know anything about anything, who knows what microsoft will do with it (I hadn't realised they owned it!), they might integrate parts of it into something new, or butcher and sell off pieces, who knows?! Microsoft does weird things.

Slowly stripped away features and overly policed this social experience into the ground.
Before even trying out Neos VR and getting crypto rugpulled by them eventually, I was a frequent on this during the "Rift DK1" era; Well, technically, the Rift DK2 existed during that time, and there were a lot of chill VR developers (no annoying kids) on during that time. Because I was trying to avoid annoying people on VRChat publics, I later went back to this a few years later (during the Quest era). I randomly joined a Cards Against Humanity lobby and there was some kid with a Quest in the game. During the usual convos, I mentioned that I was playing this with a Oculus Rift. The kid with the Oculus Quest said something along the lines of "you're playing this with a Rift? You should be playing this with a Quest." As soon as I heard that, I left and never came back. Probably for the best or worst, depending on the circumstances. But I guess it turned into some event thingy instead of a social thing like VRChat because NBCUniversal bought it or something in 2017 because it was about to shut down and that's when they added Quest support and then Microsoft bought it and added some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ spyware or whatever and then it pooped the bed in 2023. Anyways, it's dead now. It's a paperweight now. You can't even add it to your library anymore. I miss these times, but now I guess I have to use VRChat. I'll just go to The Great Pug lobbies instead because they're PC-only. Less annoying kids or people on them.
I believe this was my first social VR experience. It was great. Honestly.. second best to VRC, microsoft should have done better.
i remember this one - warned for sexual harassment after spinning around a dude at mach speed and dabbing. no verbal communications from me, and a simple confused giggle from the people who were there. good riddance to ♥♥♥♥. rest in piss
Rest in Peace

I remember playing this game on the Gear VR with the S8 bundle back in 2017. I made a lot of great memories with this game and had a great time with people too. Rest in peace AltspaceVR.
Never got to say a proper goodbye to this game as I never knew of it's shutdown, but it was my grand entrance into VR when I was using a iPhone and a Google Cardboard headset. Rest in piece
