Played On: HTC Vive
Alpha Locus is a title that has a lot of potential, but sadly falls short of being something that's really desirable to play. It's your typical zombie themed wave-based shooter, and there are three or four enemy models to kill. At the end of each round you can purchase new upgrades, such as laser aiming, a bigger clip, and bigger damage; additionally once you meet certain unlock prerequisites, you can purchase new weapons. For starters, you spawn with a pistol and axe. For some awful reason, the menu that pops up after every successful wave follows your head movements instead of appearing stagnant on the screen. It literally hurts the eyes to have to try and move them up so far as to see what your score and current kill count are. This menu is also glitchy, and it'll randomly take a lot of time to purchase the upgrade that you want as selecting the option just won't happen. It's a decent concept, but Alpha Locus still has a long way to go before becoming a title that someone would want to play past their first death; I lasted about 10 minutes, or the first six waves, and that was enough for me. The enemy spawns seem to get a little faster, but nothing very interesting or challenging happens. The sound effects are also pretty abysmal, they wouldn't be so bad if they didn't sound so compressed. It's free, but there are more fun and substantial low -to-no cost titles on the market. Alpha Locus VR Review Gameplay 4/5 ------------------------ Alpha Locus VR is a wave based shooter aimed primarily for the vive. This was slightly problematic as I played on the Oculus RIft, but used the advanced input plugin to rotate my controllers. You end waves of monsters and upgrade your weapons at the end, working your way from a pistol to a smg and shotgun. As well as that, your left hand is dedicated to a melee weapon, which you can use to swiftly end foes. Overall it's a very fun game and I can see myself playing for many hours, as well as showing it to my buddies. Graphics 4/5 ------------------------ This game is a visual feast for the eyes, the lighting is dark and moody, with a subtle red tint that fills you with dread. Your weapons are incredibly detailed at a level that puts even H3VR to shame. The monsters themselves look great, and are quite spooky when up close, especially the regular sized zombies! Sounds 2/5 ----------------------- I do have a complaint regarding the sounds, they're rather weak sounding and don't quite have that 'oomph' you'd expect. As well as that, I would have liked some intense music. Summary 4/5 ----------------------- Overall I think this game is fantastic, and I would definitely recommend this game to anybody who owns a VR headset for both themselves and to be used as their primary demo, as it's a tonne of fun and with a little work could be even better! Alpha Locus VR is a free VR game. It worked on my HTC Vive system, looked ok, played ok, sounded ok. You have an axe and a gun, the axe is very powerful. Try it, if you like wave based shooters. For more info: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUnXdXwQRho https://rawg.io/games/alpha-locus-vr
Experienced on the Oculus Rift with Touch Controllers
This is a stand-still 360 wave shooter. There are 3 different types of enemies: a zombie, a flying bat, & a bigger zombie. They all walk (or fly) straight towards you. After each wave, you can upgrade your weapon or buy a new weapon. You have a handgun, an axe, double handguns, SMG, machete, or shotgun. However, on the Oculus Rift Touch controllers at least, the gun angle on firearms are not correct and they points upwards by default. Unfortunately, the difficulty in this game is how difficult it is to see the enemies. There's this fog that covers up enemies & where they are coming from. That would be a neat idea if the lighting were better and if the game had spatial audio. However, this game has none of that. So in the end, it's just difficult to see. Enemy AI is dumb and just goes straight at you. It's just more of them as the waves continue. The UI menus are also clunky to say the least. This isn't the worst game out there, but I've played better free to play wave shooters. Close call, but I'm going to have to say no to this game. This game just has too many issues, even at free, to be recommendable. Rate 4.5/10. You can watch my review & gameplay here: https://youtu.be/Y8XOzjWlLMY
