fun game lots of options. would prefer is all the dialog was spoken
This game has me locked in. The story is rich and I love that there are many outcomes. It does not drag until the next choice. Reaching the achievements is something that is fun for me with this game. I play making impulsive choices and they come at a good pace. I don't like games that make them unattainable because it turns into work instead of fun. This game does not do the latter and I am very happy to keep playing.
story is good and love the characterization of everyone
XENOSKAR IS THE BEST Voice acting was peak cant wait to complete the rest of the endings biggest regret was not buying this sooner
At a Glance Recommendation: Recommended Best For: Players looking for a lengthy choice-driven visual novel with multiple romance routes, excellent writing, and explicit M/M content that balances erotic scenes with substantial character stories. Not For: Players who dislike self-discovery protagonists, significant route replay, or darker themes involving violence, coercion, and imprisonment. Playtime: Approximately 30 hours for all achievements. My recommendation has not changed, but I've expanded the analysis to better reflect the game's strengths, its shortcomings, and how it compares to the many M/M visual novels I've reviewed since originally posting this review. 🎮 Gameplay & Genre Alpha Hole Prison is a massive choice-driven visual novel built around seven romance routes, dozens of endings, and an enormous number of branching decisions. Nearly every choice meaningfully influences how the story unfolds, which gives the routes a stronger sense of player agency than many visual novels in the genre. There is no combat or gameplay beyond making decisions, but the sheer amount of branching content kept me invested from beginning to end. Completing every route and earning all 84 achievements took me just under 30 hours. While replaying scenes is unavoidable, each romance develops into its own story with enough unique content that I rarely felt like I was simply reading the same story again. 🔥 M/M Content This is an unapologetically adult visual novel built around gay romance and explicit sex. Every romance option is male, the animated scenes are plentiful, and each route develops a distinct relationship instead of simply swapping one partner for another. My personal favorite was the guard, Verataz, whose route struck the best balance between emotional investment and chemistry. My biggest criticism remains Miguel himself. He begins the story with no apparent attraction to men before adapting to life in Alpha Hole remarkably quickly. The game does a better job than many visual novels at making that transition emotionally believable, and importantly, it fully commits after that brief introductory framing. There is no “I’m straight again” ending or retreat back into heterosexuality. Still, leaning on an “I’ve never been into guys until now” trope slightly weakens what is otherwise a confident gay fantasy. I generally find it more satisfying when a protagonist already knows who he is before the story begins. 🎨 Visuals & Style Character designs are expressive, the CGs are plentiful, and the partially animated scenes add energy without becoming distracting. The cast also offers a respectable range of body types, from twinks and twunks to more traditionally athletic and muscular builds, giving the romance options distinct visual identities even if there is little human racial diversity. Since the game is set in a space prison, that variety instead comes through its cast of humanoid alien species, which helps the world feel larger than a collection of human archetypes. The backgrounds also deserve credit. Alpha Hole feels like an actual prison society with its own culture, politics, and factions rather than simply a collection of rooms built to connect one sex scene to the next. Combined with the partial voice acting, the presentation remains impressive several years after release. 🗣️ Tone & Writing What surprised me most was how invested I became in the story itself. Although the marketing understandably emphasizes the explicit content, the writing spends just as much time developing the prison, its politics, its rivalries, and the relationships that form within it. The romance routes have enough room to become genuine character stories instead of feeling like a checklist of erotic scenes, and several emotional moments landed far better than I expected. Miguel's introductory "straight until now" framing is still the one narrative decision that consistently pulled me out of the experience. Once he arrives at Alpha Hole, that aspect of his character largely disappears, but it wasn't enough to overshadow how well the rest of the cast and the world are written 👍 Best Thing The combination of meaningful branching routes, genuinely engaging storytelling, and memorable romances makes this feel far more substantial than the average adult visual novel. 👎 Worst Thing Miguel's “straight until now” framing still feels like an unnecessary concession to a common trope in M/M visual novels, and some storylines lean into violence that may be uncomfortable for more sensitive players. ⭐ Final Verdict Alpha Hole Prison remains one of Y Press Games' strongest releases and one of the most ambitious adult M/M visual novels currently available. It delivers an enormous amount of content, memorable romance routes, excellent production values, and a story that is far stronger than its marketing might suggest. If you're looking for a long-form gay visual novel where explicit content is supported by genuinely engaging characters and meaningful player choice, this is an easy recommendation despite my reservations about Miguel's character arc. finally!!!! a good y press game!! recommend over all their others
Fantastic character design and stories, with multiple and varied endings where each choice truly does count. Highly recommend!!
good yaoi
