Alex Hill: Whispers at White Oak Inn

I LOVED it. As an avid player of the Nancy Drew games - this felt like home. It is amazing for a very first game from this developer. BUT I will say for $20 it was PAINFULLY too short. A good story though & like I said gave me Nancy Drew vibes which I LOVED.

Good game, had several crushes though

I liked this game and it obviously scratches the Nancy Drew itch. However there were a couple things that threw me off. First, the voice acting definitely feels choppy in a lot of the dialogue. In terms of game sequencing, a lot of the things to progress the story didn't feel natural and I would have to look up what I would need to do to trigger the next event.

I don't review games often, but I loved this. For those OG Nancy Drew lovers, this hits the spot. It is definitely a love letter written to the old days of HER. Even the post credits reveal reminded me of the games. Unlike some of the reviews here, I had zero problems running the game and I didn't mind any of the voice acting. Can't wait to solve Alex Hill's next mystery!

Great game especially for fans of Nancy Drew. Plenty of easter eggs that don't detract from the main game if you haven't ever played. Also fun Dr Who easter eggs too.

I loved the retro nancy drew feel I got from the game. The simplicity of the point and click, the story and the puzzles. I loved how the creator still made it their own and the different references. My personal favorite was the gas mask and the 3d glasses representing doctor who. I am looking forward to the next one!

Oof. This is rough. It very obvious that many of the high reviews are from fans of HER Interactive's old limited point-and-click Nancy Drew games, whose eagerness for something new made them see this with rose-coloured glasses. I am also a fan of those, which is how I heard about this game. I was looking forward to this. I wanted to support it. I wanted to like it. I'm delighted that Nancy fans are trying to create a similar product for fellow fans. But I can't lie and say this is a decent game. It's not even close to on par with the oldest Nancy games, which had their own issues with controls and soft locking. The difference is, those still are delightfully entertaining. This one has very few puzzles and tasks, and those that are are very simple for the most part. They took me 20 seconds to 2 minutes, except for a puzzle at the end which gave you zero direction on what the end goal is so it's all annoying guesswork (or looking up the answer). I wouldn't necessarily mind the simpler tasks and like that they make sense in context of the story (The Final Scene is my favourite Nancy game, for comparison and I don't like ridiculously hard puzzles or too quick time frames that aren't accessible) but you need to be engaging in other ways. The Alex Hill characters are dull. They aren't physically expressive and are kind of a Titanic: Adventure Out of Time-esque. The voice acting is mostly bland and unexpressive also - including Alex. The characters are just boring. And 95% of what you do is talking to people and calling them and then doing it all over again, so you must have interesting characters. There is nothing to keep me caring about the story or the people. The dialogue is also hard to read with the white words and black outline, and sometimes the screen is so dark that even with the brightness at 100% and looking up where I am supposed to be clicking, I couldn't always see it. The ending is also unsatisfactory as it doesn't entirely wrap up. This game was just not ready and is not worth spending more than $5 on, and even then I'm not sure it's worth it. But I do hope the creator willl take the feedback and use it to improve their next game.

Great little game. It took me about 15 hours to play, with some minor cheats. The love the small team of developers put into this game is obvious. Very reminiscent of the original HeR Nancy Drew games. Definitely worth a play!
