This title was received with mixed results back in the mid-nineties. The reason was because SSI ventured from its usual success with titles such as Pool of Radiance. The concept was to bridge out and come closer to the Legend of Zelda games, of that decade, while maintaining homage to the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons genres. For me personally, this was one of my all time favorites. I loved movies such as "Thief of Bagdad", "Voyage of Sinbad" "Arabian Adventure", and thought they were exotic and entertaining. So when I played this, I loved that I had my own genie, my character was nameable; which was a terrific customization feature for its time. I loved that the game ventured away from the sometimes slow tactical aspects SSI had for each battle in other titles. My love for this game has pressed me to spend years trying to learn C++ on my own. The reason being was so that I could create a sequel to The Genies Curse, a labor of love. The biggest result is I have a LOT of stories for the Al-Qadim world that would probably even resurrect this genre. If you have a chance do a search for the Al-Qadim art from the books. Seeing that will help you understand how it could captivate one man's imagination for decades.
A great experience, definitely a game worth playing! I did not have a chance to play Al-Qadim when it was released, although I recall seeing the game box in stores and wishing that I could try it, as I was familiar with the D&D setting. I'm so glad that this has received a Steam release. It's a simple DOSBox port, but that's all that's really needed, it seems to work great. It's definitely a game which is heavy on the storytelling and worldbuilding, but light on many of the traditional elements which were present in most western RPGs up to when this was created. No character creation to speak of other than entering your name, and then you're off for adventure! Movement and combat mostly are composed of left and right clicking in the direction you intend to go/attack, and items are accessed through a menu system which pauses the game. Very simple as I said, really just a (sometimes fairly difficult) diversion as you move from one part of the story to the next. Firmly recommended! I also look forward to checking out the other Gold Box games which were released at the same time. This one isn't part of the larger "pack", and that actually encouraged me to pick it up first to see how the emulation worked on my machine.
Pretty fun to see this pop up in a Humble Bundle 33 years after working on it as my first non-volunteer game credit. Sorry about designing the opening sequence - that was totally my fault. It was fun to figure out what all I could do with the script editor our amazing lead programmer created along with the entire game engine and I got a bit carried away in that first sequence. You'll get through it quickly enough - just not exactly modern day game design :).
The game is great with a good story. But I wish this was a remaster. Putting in quality of life improvements like keyboard bindings and quick save and load would be amazing.
Ein kleines Action-Adventure mit orientalischem Flair, das durch sein schönes Setting und die stimmige Atmosphäre richtig Spaß macht. Klare Empfehlung!
Excellent Adventure/RPG , its one of those rare D&D based games where the mechanics are toned down to promote story and easy gameplay . Great Graphics rough difficulty spikes , stock up on potions till the end. Game has got amazing depth for it's time.
Al-Qadim: The Genie's Curse is an ancient game from 1994. Departing from the usual Dungeons and Dragons RPG styles of the era, they tried making an action RPG heavy on dodging, puzzles and traps. The problem here is that the game has aged like milk, it's clunky and plays badly. It's a whopping 29 years old at the time of this review. The game runs in DOSBOX and lacks proper 4:3 aspect ratio and support for any modern gaming display resolutions, hasn't been modernised or updated to run smoothly on modern gaming PCs. Despite this lack of modernisation, it carries a pretty high price tag for such an ancient game. This seems to have been put on Steam as a nostalgia gouge. Al-Qadim: The Genie's Curse is relatively expensive for an abandonware nostalgia gouge, at $6 USD, and it's not worth it. The game is just too old, hasn't been modernised. And as the old saying goes, you can't go home again.
This review is for all of the "Gold Box' games recently released. all of them are classic, enjoyable games and a great addition to any library. I would have loved to get a graphic upgrade and achievements, but the games are good enough with the quality of life improvements they added that I am still happy with my purchase, especially the original Pool of Radiance, Curse of the Azure Bonds, and Eye of the Beholder series. Some of the others did not hold up as well, Stronghold, Al-Qadim, and Menzoberanzan are a little harder to love. Next I would love to see someone release the old Might and Magic series with these same QoL improvements and hopefully some achievements. :)
It is a lot of fun! Definitely an older game one has to get used to but I love the setting, it is a lot of fun. Save a lot!!
