The game is just too small. You're basically playing sci-fi minecraft in a map that's 100x100 blocks. If you stand on one side, you can literally see the wall of the map on the other side. The game had some interesting stuff, but the scale wasn't large enough. If you took out the resource grinding, the game probably has an hour of content. I've been looking forward to this game for years and I was pretty disappointed in the final result.
Atrocious character models, great earlygame gameplay and exploration. Setup and teardown to improve is rather tedious and once you've explored the early content, all that is left is a chain quest of chores increasing in intensity. Felt like a slap in the face each time I progressed further.. The first 5 hours of gameplay were great, the last 7 were factory scaling with no reward. I judge games at the rate of 20$ per 50hr quality gameplay. I got about 3$ worth before deciding not worth, and I'm the sweaty overcommitter type, lol. Do try out the original aground if you're into games that scale in size and concept.
Too short, liked the original aground much much more
This barely gets the thumbs up. This game is *vastly* worse than Aground. If you haven't played Aground, turn around and go play that one instead. Seriously, go. Compared to Aground, it's so bad that it feels *awful* to play. But, if you're *not* comparing it to Aground... I mean, it's not bad. It's not great, but not bad. Base building is fun and relaxing. And the gameplay generally is fun. It's not too expensive, all told. The endings suck, the plot is stupid as hell and terribly conveyed. But like... my family and I *did* have fun, so I guess that means I have to thumbs up, right?
Aground Zero is a game that is meant to be mostly like Aground, but in 3D and with a huge focus on automation and base building. And I would say it succeeded as far as the automation is concerned. You get quite a few resources to extract, components to craft, end-game components to fuse together so you can work on making the most efficient base and build the most powerful tools. The starting biome (the caves) can be expanded, remodeled as you wish, or you can just leave the planet and work wherever you feel like. After a while, you will have finished setting up your workshops and you can wait for whatever you need to be produced while focusing on other projects. The different planets and biomes come with their opportunities for terraformation, some suggested by the game, others not, so you won't be bored as long as you don't limit yourself to the main quest (which after a while starts losing steam, imo). The main problem with this game is, as other have mentioned, that it offers a lot of different kind of content while never expanding much on it. Vehicles can be crafted, but don't have much of an impact because there is usually not a reason to use them aside from the spaceship - which can let you travel through space, obviously. Base building is possible, and you get many different kind of walls and floors to use, but there is barely any furniture to put inside to make them feel lively. There is a combat system, but not that many enemies to fight, only one weapon for most of the game, and by the time you unlock the magic weapons the only real enemy left is the final boss. Overall, my gut feeling is that the game dev tried too hard to bring in everything there was in Aground (which was what the players requested, mind you) when the game would have benefited from focusing on what it had at the beginning. Still, I will recommend this game. After launch, I started a new game and got so far something like 20 hours of content, and I am still not done with it. It might be frustrating at times to consider what it could be, but so long as you focus on what the game is instead, I believe it will be worth its price.
Not nearly enough content for a full release, the original aground was very unique and decently fun, and unfortunately this really doesn't even have half the content amount as the first game. The idea is unique but the content is severely lacking. Also not going to lie the character designs are actually terrible, they look like trash. I know that it's kind of a continuation of how the sprites looked in the original aground but it really just does not work. I think if this games scale was greatly expanded, and the worlds made a little bit bigger there could genuinely be something to this game, but it just isn't and I could not possibly recommend this game for 20$
I really want to recommend this game, but I can't. It really seems like it was rushed out of the door abruptly. Not enough depth, not enough lore, not enough anything. The base for all of it is there, but the content is not. The original Aground was much more detailed and interesting despite having one dimension less. Better play that one.
YET ANOTHER cash grab. I picked this up in early access and enjoyed what seemed to be the very early stages of an interesting concept. A little bit of content and a bugfix or two and suddenly... it's done? Don't waste your money here, folks. It's completely unfinished.
If you don't mind paying money for what is essentially a demo pick this up its a good game but doesnt even meet my dollar per hour requirement for recommending this game. You get about 10 hours of gameplay in total and thats if you do everything. If this game was 10 bucks I'd probably say yes to picking it up but at 20 I just wouldn't.
I liked aground. This is not aground. It is a poorly made flesh suit pretending to wear the skin of aground.
