Guys, help out, my wife said if there are 300 thumbs up and 50 awards, then she will buy me a new PC and a case of beer is NOT a SCAM!!!!!
An diamond in the rough, Aeternum is a western made shmup that could not borrow more from Touhou in style or design. You play a demon girl (And later a couple of other characters) flying through a school, blasting trash enemies, dodging huge piles of bullets with a tiny hitbox, and meeting a quirky anime girl, with whom communications immediately break down a fight starts. The bosses have timed and scored patterns with bonuses for clearing them successfully without getting hit, as well as time out options to support the game's pacifist mode, but the trippy visuals when they engage them is pure Touhou. Enemies drop power items that boost your power, which also doubles as your bombs, and of course there's a Touhou style autocollect line if you can advance far enough on the screen. Dangerous but rewarding. This game doesn't really WANT to murder you though; bosses drop a full bomb's worth of power each pattern you clear. And if that's not enough, on Story mode you get nearly infinite retries so long as each death just throws you back in with much less power and you can keep coming back as long as your power doesn't hit zero; a boss would have to utterly destroy you for that to happen. Not to say it can't and won't, but the game makes the bosses work for it, yet it feels like the gamer dignity wounding charity it is. The story is charming enough and worth the trip. For the veterans, an arcade mode drops the story chatter and the infinite respawn gimmick, as well as four difficulties to meet you wherever you like on skill level from a walk in the park to a walk through Detroit with the wrong gang colors while Pyramid Head, Nemesis, and the T-1000 are after you for your past, present, and future. Bullet patterns are elaborate, colorful, and spammy in a Touhou-esque manner. An extra boss, again Touhou-esque, concludes the story in a clever manner that leaves it satisfying and also whets my appetite for other games in this goofy universe. There's a lot of competition in the indie shmup market these days, but Aeternum is worth your time if you have any love for a Touhou style bullet hell.
This is a pretty difficult bullet hell game. I died loads and loads of times, however I was playing with the mouse and keyboard (steam). It will be a whole lot better to play this with a controller since it is also available on Xbox live plus the controller buttons in the screen kinda hinted you should use a controller. The music is very catchy and adds to the Anime graphics. The bullet patterns are pretty difficult so you will need a fast reaction time and some pattern study (aka dying a lot) to get past certain levels and bosses. It has 5 stages with 8 big bad boss fights plus various game modes, from easy to lunatic and a pacifist mode for vegan gamers (if you hate killing digital creatures) . The Good: + Great sounds and music + Good graphics + Bullet Hell fun The Bad: - Sometimes too difficult with a keyboard 15 minutes Gameplay without commentary so you can get a good impression of the game: https://youtu.be/M0BuR9O61LU
I am 32 years old. My ex-wife and I have a daughter together, and we adopted our son together. Both are now 4 years old. When we were going through our separation, I felt lost and unhappy. I was self-destructive. One day, I was so angry with everything spiraling out of control that I punched a concrete wall in a moment of overwhelming emotion. This resulted in breaking my fifth metacarpal in my right hand—the hand I worked with, played games with, and used to carry my children to bed—the hand I desperately needed to ensure I could continue providing. Upon learning the severity of the self-inflicted damage, I became almost suicidal. Keep in mind that just a few months before this, I was the happiest man, with no history of depression or anxiety. I had never experienced anger outbursts, nor was I the type to break down and cry, but I was in a tough situation that truly prevented me from seeing the light on the other side. With nothing better to do, I looked for a game I could play WITH ONE HAND while recovering. Somehow, I stumbled upon this game and read some of the comments. I decided it was worth a try... I must admit I didn't beat the game, nor did I play as much as some of you. In fact, I may have played this game for only a day or two. That being said, after doing so, I had a new joy and hope for life. I managed to leave behind the pain and suffering that had been thrust upon me. I could experience the joy and happineass of other people. I relaxed for 5 ♥♥♥♥ minutes listening to this music, long enough to realize that I would be okay. After realizing this, I turned off the game and went back to work. My hand hurt a lot, but I was motivated. I stopped feeling so sorry for myself and became the father I needed to be at that moment, not the weak boy I was behaving like. Today, I am close friends with the mother of my children. We don't fight, argue, or say hurtful things to each other. We are parents and friends. Now I have 3 children. My third child is, wait, ALSO 4 YEARS OLD. The woman I am with was going through a very similar situation at the time of my separation, and we just unexpectedly stumbled into each other's lives. We have been dating for a year and are very happy together. Moral of the story: you never know what life has in store for you, and if I had given up when all odds were against me, I wouldn't be where I am today. This silly little game helped me realize that. Thank you.
Absolutely fantastic game. Good mechanics and enjoyable gameplay. I had this title on the Xbox Indie market back in the day and was happy to rebuy it.
An amazing game that deserves more love. Now I've never been a fan of bullet hell games but I have to honestly say this game is an exception. The characters are very made, music is very appropriate for each level. As for the gameplay, well it's a bullet hell game, you figure it out. Is it difficult? Sure but I found myself replaying the same levels over and over again without getting frustrated. All in all this game was a lot of fun. Support the Indies and give this game a look.
Thank you IGC for sharing this code. What is it? A side scrolling shoot em up that reminds us of Choujikuu Yousai Macross (Famicom 1985) and the gradius/parodius series (many platforms). It has a story and chibi Anime and fantasy theme in it too. Why? Because they wanted to. What did we think? It’s being a long time since we played a title of this genre and it’s a nice reminder of what has changed since the Nintendo Family computer. We really didn’t like the mix of a fantasy, magic school genre with a side scrolling shooter. Yes we are aware Twinbee and Parodius did similar back in their time. Regarding game mechanics we quite like the include the focus and graze system. This reminds us a lot of Choujikuu Yousai Macross which also allowed you to change the size of your hit box. The shields aren’t a bad idea either. It’s not immediately obvious that the 2 characters you can play as have different shields and different power ups. Speaking of powerups we would of preferred a system like Raiden with 2 or 3 colours and missiles OR Gradius which had a bar at the bottom allowing you to select which power up. One thing to note it is critical you play this with a modern controller e.g. an xbox controller. A DPAD of the Famicom/NES or SNES days or keyboard keys would not give you a good experience. It's also interesting to note that autofire is the norm these days. I wonder how this would play without auto fire. The pacifism run and arrange mode were good ideas but we played arcade mode the most. What could it have improved? Local multiplayer! This type of game lends itself to it. One more person to dodge those bullets with you and help you shield would have played well. On this note perhaps even online multiplayer. We were also didn't like using X as the default to shoot and were glad to to remap it to A. Would we recommend it? Do you like learning patterns and weaving through a screen full of obstacles? In other words do you like honing quick responses? Do you like chibi anime art? Is happy and chirpy chiptune/pop music your thing? On the other hand you can think... Are you a gamer who doesn’t have the patience to practice their reaction time? Do you really not like anything cute?
Nice game with some trippy background transitions, the soundtrack alone is worth the price of admission if you like chiptune. Edit: This review used to link to the soundtrack on bandcamp, but it doesn't seem to be there anymore as of the time of update. Fortunately, the soundtrack is free through steam under the games dlc section.
