october 2022 edit: the price keeps going up and down for no reason, so wait for a big discount to discourage such practices. at first it was $2, went up to $5 a few months later, then down to $1 in the same year, and it's been $7 since august. adam the storyteller is a colorful matching game where you get to place all the tiles on the levels. I have to disagree with the 'intuitive, easy to learn but hard to master' statement on the store page, as a tutorial and a how to play section had to be added just to cover the basics, but it's fine now. 100 levels unlocked one by one, each with its own grid, but puzzle pieces are randomized every time. it took me a while to get used to it, but didn't find it an issue overall. you can only look at the next 5 available pieces (called 'puzzles' in the game), so it kinda made sense that there was no undo initially (got patched in later), nor moving of already placed pieces, though I'm sure the latter could also be implemented somehow. restarting a bigger grid can be a pain, but I somehow found it more tolerable with randomized pieces. the way it works is, you can usually start wherever you want, by placing any of the 5 revealed tiles, then connect the others to that one and the others one by one. the big tile has to match the color of the small piece, and obviously can't put anything where there are connectors of different colors (or one that's just a blocker and doesn't belong to any of the main colors). score multiplication is possbile by having more than one small piece of the same color on a tile. the goal on most levels is to fill all the tiles, the optional grabbing of hearts is covered along with it. no timer or anything, but there's a limited amount of pieces, their number is always shown in the top right for each color. of course, you'll never know when they'll come up and what kind of connectors they'll have. later on a 4th and even a 5th color gets added to the mix, plus there are colored empty tiles that only accept that kind of piece. as you run into more mechanics, they'll often change the goals too. 'run!' levels keep moving and you only need to reach the end, hearts still optional, as is covering every tile. luckily, you can pause and think as long as you want, even fast-forward, and there are only 5 of these in the entire game. the exit is not marked in any way, but it's always the last column of the grid. wooden warning signs on both ends make tiles disappear if they fill that line completely. you have to make sure there are connectors left elsewhere, so you can continue placing stuff, and on these levels reaching a certain score is the goal. if clearing a line leaves no tiles on the board, a random amount of metal traps can appear. those tiles have to be covered too, but best leave them till the end, as they destroy the 5 currently visible unplaced pieces. then again, they can be used to replace them with something potentially better (or worse). later on there are various special tiles that also act as regular ones, but placed strategically can be really helpful. swords change the color of small pieces on the otherwise empty tiles they touch, wands change the color of connectors on the big tiles they touch, hammers remove all the connectors from adjacent filled tiles, bows change the color of connectors 2 or 3 tiles away. and finally, covering a map on the grid adds 5 pieces to the pool, but they don't appear often. points don't only matter on score-based levels: if you beat the top score on all of them to get a star on each, a secret 100th level will be revealed. getting all the hearts isn't a requirement, but replaying a level only shows uncollected ones and the level still has to be completed for them to count. as I said above, many things weren't communicated and taught properly, which lead to a lot of frustration at the beginning. nothing wrong with figuring stuff out on your own, learn by doing and all that, but I don't think the game's designed well enough for that, so an expanded how to play section was necessary, and if you don't want to read it, don't. what I didn't like was the story itself, not that it's a big draw for most puzzlers. told in pieces before every level, it's nonsensical, written badly and full of grammatical mistakes, plus it's often just random repeated filler. another downside is dialog has to be clicked through every time a level is selected (not after a regular restart though), but the silver lining is gibberish can be turned off. it was the first thing I begged of the developer and luckily he complied. the technical aspects are fine otherwise. I liked the colorful presentation, sound effects aren't annoying, music is okay too, if extremely repetitive. there are separate volume settings, windowed mode with a resizable window (keeps the aspect ratio and remembers size between sessions, but not position), and a level select screen. it's quite ugly and only available while playing, but it does its job. and while the font is fine in general, 1 and 7 look exactly the same, which doesn't bode well for displaying scores and the number of remaining pieces. once I figured everything out (or should I say once the developer explained everything, before the expansion of the how to play section), I had a lot of fun and breezed through dozens of levels, but around the halfway point things got real and I decided to end my journey there. while definitely not perfect, it's done reasonably well, used to be cheap (see the edit on top), and offers many hours of gameplay that gets pretty tough later on. unfortunately, the demo is not available anymore, but hopefully this review and some of my screenshots in the community hub will be of help in deciding if it's something you'd enjoy.
