There were a lot of superficial issues, and as an adventure game it's not made particularly well, the interactions and the text are too slow and I think you need to work on reducing the delay between the actions, however, I still think the mood and the atmosphere were handled pretty well, if you can overlook the actual "game" part of the experience, there is still an interesting psychological deconstruction of the character. I had the opposite experience from one of the reviews I read, I think the story is the highlight of the game while the locations needed a lot of work, yes it's a predictable story, and yes it tells you the mystery very early on, but I think it's perspective of the character and how he gets to that point is what makes it a suspenseful experience. The narrative itself is very grounded in reality, I am sure the plot in this game happened to a million people, but I think the whole point of this game is that it shows what happens to these individuals and how a sane person is driven into despair. There are no monsters in this game, there are no magical towns with evil gods, just the things that happen in your head, it's a metaphor for him losing everything that he cared about, and tracing back the steps that led him to that point. I would recommend staying away from using the grain and fog too much, maybe you were inspired by Silent Hill, but with these 2D games you really want to see the detail and have that sense of contrast to get a good aesthetic going, if I can barely see anything, it's not making the game more immersive, it just looks ugly and confusing to me. The very first segment in the street made a very bad first impression because you overused the effect, but the second time you come back to this place (toward the end) the contrast is a lot more clear and I can appreciate the work that you put into details a lot more. This happens in a lot of rooms in the game, a lot of the time the source of light does not contrast enough against the background, making it look like everything is on the same level, giving the picture no depth. There are actually some locations in this game that strangely have better contrast, so it's not consistently bad or good, I think going forward, I would say that you should focus on detail and sources of light, instead of assuming that putting fog and grain creates a spooky environment, you can still use those effects, just do it more sparingly. The puzzles were mostly extremely basic for the first half of the game, pretty much just 1+1 with little to no navigation. The only time I felt different was during the section with the "house of mirrors" because the puzzles had more of a metaphoric place within the narrative, which made them more creative, as far as I am concerned. I kinda liked the usage of the masked man who is like the only "character" we get to interact with, and you probably could have populated the place with that a little more, just to make the experience a bit less empty. There was only one part of the game that I thought was excellent and that was the strategic use of the sound effects and ambiance, I really liked the purpose of "moans" and how the characters would refuse to revisit their locations, as well as using them to highlight the tense parts of the narrative. Overall it seems like you would play a lot with the soundtrack across the locations and you should maintain that going forward because it makes the atmosphere more rich with character.
Pros:
(+) Even though the story was very basic and pretty much explains exactly what happens, in this case I think you got away with it because all of the focus is on his mental despair and how the game walks you through his journey, it's a very grounded narrative, but sometimes a realistic story can be effective too and I think you manipulated the locations using the psychological metaphors pretty well. (+) The soundtrack was the best part of the game for me, there were a lot of strategic mood changes and highlighting the narrative moments with the sounds that the character didn't like.
Feedback:
Visuals - while I didn't like how you often overused the blur and grain, there were occasional locations that had interesting designs, I think if you can strategically focus more on the contrast of light sources and maybe a little effects like dust particles, it would look a lot better. Since you are using photo-like images, it might be a good idea to hire someone to make a similar sprite for the character, pixel art stands out a bit too much against the images. A good example for me is the contrast between the street at the start of the game and the same street toward the end, second one looks a lot better, and there is no reason to just blur the crap out of the game, if I can't see much of anything, it does not make environment spooky and immersive for me, it just looks low effort. Whenever you have light sources from the outside or something like a neon sign, try to give them some glow against the background. Delays and Hotspots: - there is a bit too much dialogue and action delay in the game, not sure if you are using AGS or not, but you should be able to reduce it a little to make it more responsive if I am skipping the text. There were a bunch of locations and puzzle spots that looked too much like a background, make sure the player can spot them. Give the inventory UI some type of basic art, and you should be able to click and point the items instead of holding the mouse. Overall Thoughts: 6/10 The game made a bad first impression, I didn't think it was made that well at all, but somehow with the use of good sound effects and some decent psychological metaphors, you still managed to get to the finish line burned and broken. So it wasn't great, but if you can work more on the superficial experience, I think you at least get the atmosphere and the narrative right which is more important to me. You don't want your game to ever look too blurry, even for a horror game, things like detail, texture, and contrast are more effective than making everything dark and gloomy. Like I said, the second time you enter the street looks much better, that is the aesthetic you should maintain. Had I not seen the sun,I could've borne the shade.
Youtube playthrough and review here: https://youtu.be/-CpRROH0xeQ I'm biased because I love these throwback concepts and styles, but I had a really good time with this game and would recommend it to other fans of this subgenre. Not in agreement with other reviews regarding the darkness - I honestly had few issues navigating the environment and there are some specific moments where it's tastefully woven into the overall scene. I think this does a lot to add to the overall atmosphere of the game, wouldn't change a thing about it. Points of interest, doorways and key items are literally glowing. There are some conceptual issues with a couple of the puzzles/item sequences, and it did feel quite a bit hand-holdey for me, particularly through the midsection. Specifically, I thought the payoff for opening the remote blinds would be a view of a new scene, which would have been nice even if it was just a one-off. Instead it revealed a key item that had been there the whole time. I'm on the fence about the plot. I do like that it isn't the typical psychological horror trope of bad dad murders everyone, and I appreciate that there was some nuance to the balance of personal tragedy and the horrific consequences of impulsive rage in regards to the main character's story. I felt like it lingered quite a bit on the subject of Caroline's infidelity and the portrayal of the subject was awkward at times. Big fan of the symbolism, the mounting dread, the internal conflict of the main character and the sense that the tragedy of the story was like a spider's web that every character, not just Ian, was somehow caught in. I'm reviewing this like it's a major release from a known developer because I think it actually comes close to feeling like that, and I have to say that I'm majorly impressed that this presumably a first project by a small team or solo dev. It's a great achievement if that's the case, and either way I'm excited to play future releases from this developer. Thanks for this experience and please consider doing more in this style!
A Spider To A Fly is a point and click adventure horror game exploring the dark events plaguing a mans past. Pros - Unique if a little dark visual style (dark as in hard to see) - A good narrative which for the most part makes sense - Great puzzles with no awful adventure game logic - A good brooding atmosphere Cons - At times a little TOO dark to see what you want to - A few aspects of the narrative remain unclear Overall this is a fun little point and click depicting horrific events that reminded me of the The Cat Lady games if on a simple level. It's a fun way to spend an hour and a half / two hours.
A Masterpiece of story telling! A dark point and click adventure. You follow Ian as he tries to find his missing son. Fighting your demons along the way. The story telling is top notch in my opinion. The artwork and the audio in this game enhances the story in such a way that it will grip you until the very end! Only problem was the game was a little bit to dark and needs a brightness slider. While using obs, it was very hard for my community to see and enjoy this game. I highly recommend this game!
A really atmospheric game, the sound design is great and a I love the set pieces and artwork. The story is strong but I feel could be fleshed out more in my opinion - regardless still well worth picking up and experiencing it - if you are on the fence about playing it - definitely do, especially whilst on sale! :)
Full playthrough here: https://youtu.be/2tN1ZllYUJY To start I want to state that the game is very interesting and good the visuals are by far the best part the scenery and the upfront actions of the protagonist who is basically constantine with high water pants and no socks the game is well worth the money, but there's a few things that keep it from being a great game. One the creator goes in dry with the story you basically know everything that's going to happen pretty early on there's no build up where the creator gives you much back story barely any information about any of the characters or any reason to care about them or their plight it's a bit of a generic story with no immersion. This might be a plus or a minus depending on what kind of gamer you are, but for a point and click it's very straight forward there's no real brain teasers the game is very upfront on what it wants you to do there's very little mystery in this game. I still definitely enjoyed it, but it feels like it could have been much better with some lead up.
its ok some achievements are annoying and the visuals arent always entirely consistent though, plus playing through the game more than once just feels really slow and unfun
Hey All! I'm gonna start this off by saying that I picked this game up randomly on a whim. I didn't really look into it or give it a thought, I just saw the art and the name and thought, "this looks Interesting enough for me and my wife to sit through", and boy was I right! A Spider To a Fly, to me, is a wonderful callback to the old-school suspenseful point and click games of old. Where graphics were second to good sound design, writing, and atmosphere. while relatively short, it is an experience that me and my wife both enjoyed, and honestly want more of. if you read this Syine, I hope you plan to make more games, because this fills the hole in my heart that The Cat Lady left.
