About

Arem has lived his life surrounded by ocean waves and fields of dying grass. Upon his small island lies The Settlement, a community of just three thousand: the children of the sun. Passing the long years in prayer and simple work, the blessed people of the Island live and die by their traditions. Arem, like all young men and women of The Settlement, knows well the laws of his people: perform one's obligation for the greater good, and never enter The Well- a passage leading deep into the unknown earth below.
Raised as a Woundbearer, Arem greatly desires to come of age and do his part in improving the lives of his community- none more so than Sachita, the burning girl, shunned by The Settlement but whom he loves dearly.
Yet, when Arem is suddenly given the responsibilities he always dreamed of, he finds his certainty shattered by the truth of the horror held at The Settlement’s close reach. Now doubting the only life he's ever known, Arem embarks on a secret mission to save his people and unravel the true nature of his world.
Descending into the Well and desperately searching for answers, Arem comes to understand just how much he truly has to lose.

A Song of Sunlight features a novel pseudo-turn-based combat system that challenges players to fight for their lives against horrifying enemies. Make split-second calculated decisions, then attack, block, evade, and look for openings in real-time against multiple targets in thrilling combat encounters.
By day, carry out your duties to the Settlement and interact with its inhabitants to obtain resources and learn more about the world.
By night, explore desolate megastructures filled with mystery and danger, discover weapons and equipment lost to humanity, and customize your build to suit many distinct play styles.
A tightly woven intersection of gameplay and narrative, players will interact with the game world and characters in depth.

This game is absolute masterpiece, A Diamond in the rough, A hidden Gem of a indie game. And I can't stop myself from saying it, but the homage, and similarities this shares with Blame! The Manga, illustrated by Tsutomu Nihei, are unmistakable. It's hard pressed to Find any games similar to the Blame! superstructure genre, let alone huge megastructure/ exploration walking sim games. And I am so glad to have found this game on a whim! The pixel art is phenomenal, Love Indie pixel art games, and the story is so great, relating back to Blame! it took 800 hours (A Month) for the antagonist to traverse areas. This game makes that world feel so grounded, so human, so much bigger in perspective, so much dangerous, so much more love and hate, the adult story and the subtle hints to what's coming next!! Cannot Wait for chapter 3 I'm literally so restless, I think ill replay the whole game again and again! Best indie Story Game i've played So far. 100/10 Indie Game! Should be illegal that its free.
This game is sick can't believe it's free, drops you into an interesting setting with beautiful 2d art. Then it shows the combat and its a quite indepth 2d turn action system where you have to think fast with your decesions. Really amazing how they did the art/music/story for this game it really makes it feel like an indepth world

I've got to echo the other comments and say it's wild that this is free. I'm about three in game days into the story and it's grippingly well written. And on top of being an excellent visual novel, it has a novel take on turn based combat that's hard but fair. Hard enough at least to maintain the horror atmosphere. I don't necessarily think it's the best at anything, but the fact that a single person did this much writing, game design, programming, and art at this level is amazing. I picked this up for a "try out a game with ~100 steam reviews" challenge with friends but I'm as invested in this game as any mega hit I've played. For the low low price of free you owe it to yourself to give it a try.
This is a real cool game, with innovative narration and mechanisms.
Great game ! I really loved the combat system, you will pay for every single mistake so no fight is trivial. This game also has a great story, I can't wait to see what happens next ! However, this game is text heavy, which is good, but it is definitely not for everyone. Specially if english is not your mother tongue, the vocabulary is sometimes quite sophisticated
It's wild that this is a free game. It has some oddities and some small issues but they don't really pose an issue for enjoying it. The largest portion of the game is the story sections, maybe something like 80% of the playtime if you're efficient at the action sections. Some of the story portions might feel a bit slow, but the pacing is very important. A Song of Sunlight is filled with loss, poor choices, and consequences; there will be times where consequences are sudden and barely expected and others where consequences build up for what's hours for you and years for the characters. If you've read 'Blame!' then you'll recognize a lot of familiar elements, but that's just a portion of the story so don't think it's a retread. The gameplay is very interesting, it's like if Dark Souls were a 2006 DS game. At first you'll think 'oh it's just QTEs' and then 'oh it's all stamina management', but it very slowly morphs into more and more. At its core it's a very simple turn-based rpg, but you are not given much time to decide and all actions have very strict timing. Once you're feeling comfortable and the enemies ramp up in challenge, it's a very fast system where you are expected to bring out your full set of moves, consider your spacing, and manage your resource meters almost thoughtlessly. I'm reviewing this after finishing Chapter 2, which is all that's out so far. I've got my ideas of where Chapter 3 is heading, but I'm looking forward to the developer destroying my expectations
Absolute cinema. Don't let the free price tag shy you away from this or lower your expectations, this game is crazy high effort and well made

Engaging combat system somewhat reminiscent to Sekiro, but turn based. It starts simple, but mechanics build on itself and increases in complexity over time. There's also story mode to decrease combat difficulty if needed
A well written story that ties well into lore and gameplay which isn't afraid to... pull its punches. Everything's skippable if you're not an enjoyer (you shouldn't, though, since the story is actually very good)
Simplistic music that sets the tone well during gameplay and story segments. Makes the punches hit harder.
Somehow, it's free??? And still in development for more???
For how niche this is and the amount of effort and passion the dev (wait, singular? damn what a goat) put in this, why not give it a shot? I'm sure you'll be pleasantly surprised by what you get, especially if you enjoy soulslikes or visual novels. And as mentioned above, if you're only interested in only gameplay xor story, the game graciously offers options to de-emphasize the portions you're not interested in. The only gripe I have is that controls are not rebindable, so you're stuck on arrow keys for keyboard. Controller works fine though, or rebinding via external means
