About

Arem has lived his life surrounded by ocean waves and fields of dying grass. Upon his small island lies The Settlement, a community of just three thousand: the children of the sun. Passing the long years in prayer and simple work, the blessed people of the Island live and die by their traditions. Arem, like all young men and women of The Settlement, knows well the laws of his people: perform one's obligation for the greater good, and never enter The Well- a passage leading deep into the unknown earth below.
Raised as a Woundbearer, Arem greatly desires to come of age and do his part in improving the lives of his community- none more so than Sachita, the burning girl, shunned by The Settlement but whom he loves dearly.
Yet, when Arem is suddenly given the responsibilities he always dreamed of, he finds his certainty shattered by the truth of the horror held at The Settlement’s close reach. Now doubting the only life he's ever known, Arem embarks on a secret mission to save his people and unravel the true nature of his world.
Descending into the Well and desperately searching for answers, Arem comes to understand just how much he truly has to lose.

A Song of Sunlight features a novel pseudo-turn-based combat system that challenges players to fight for their lives against horrifying enemies. Make split-second calculated decisions, then attack, block, evade, and look for openings in real-time against multiple targets in thrilling combat encounters.
By day, carry out your duties to the Settlement and interact with its inhabitants to obtain resources and learn more about the world.
By night, explore desolate megastructures filled with mystery and danger, discover weapons and equipment lost to humanity, and customize your build to suit many distinct play styles.
A tightly woven intersection of gameplay and narrative, players will interact with the game world and characters in depth.

This is my review after finishing Chapter 2 and having some time to mull over the game, to see if my love for this game was just a state of recency bias or not. It is safe to say that my love for the game remains the same. I will try my best to keep this as spoiler free as possible, and hide any information that may be deemed as a spoiler. The story. The game in my opinion has a slower start, as is the fate of introducing the characters in full, driving home the way people go about their lives, the culture and so on, but it does not overstay its welcome, as the game hooked me in from very early on, and only continued to raise the stakes, continously improving upon itself and, especially, the characters. I didn't expect to like the cast as much as i did, especially Arem who feels like his own character rather than a insert. We see him have his own convictions, his own moments of weakness and existential dread, all of which were conveyed beautifully by the writing, which is the greatest strength of A Song of Sunlight. The characters and their stories took completely unexpected paths from what i imagined it would take, information that completely change how you view a character. By the end of Chapter 2, i found myself not only deeply invested in the story, but the characters themselves. Now, while the writing and story is the thing i praise and play the game for the most, the combat aspects are fairly engaging too, a 'Easy to learn, hard to master' sort of challenge. The amount of customization with your loadout further on opens you up to being able to build to whatever you want, while the combat expands upon itself the further you go in the game, adding new mechanics until the combat feels vast in its mechanics without overwhelming the player. Do i like this game? Yes. Am i biased? Obviously, i love this game enough to go on a praising rant, something i never do, so i want others to know about what i love. Should you play it? Yes. It's free, so the most youll lose is a bit of your time if the game doesnt click in the first few hours. But if it does, itll be an experience like none other. Just play it, and buy the soundtrack if you think it was worth your time. It sure was worth mine and more
This was such a wonderful, WONDERFUL experience. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but it was not this. I understand that there is more to come, but I was left in such suspense that it actually kind of hurts that there's no more at the moment lol. Which brings me to another point. My only complaint about this game so far is that it is free. It is not finished, but it is a masterpiece and already holds so much content that I believe it deserves to be paid for. I do not want to spoil anything in this review, but if you are looking for something to play, this game is both challenging and absolutely beautiful in its storytelling. 1000/10 would recommend.
I've never written a review before but I felt that this game more than deserved it. Amazing game, 10/10 would recommend. Can't wait for more to be released!!!!!!!
Some day I hope to fully articulate how absolutely exceptional this game is. But for now, I'll simply say this is a must play for anyone that has a passing interest in visual novels or souls-likes. If there comes a time where the developer decides to charge for it's full release I will gladly meet their price - I look forward to the opportunity to support them.
That one "Ratatouille" scene with me as the critic remembering "BLAME".
PLAY IT PLAY IT RIGHT NOW
This game is absolute masterpiece, A Diamond in the rough, A hidden Gem of a indie game. And I can't stop myself from saying it, but the homage, and similarities this shares with Blame! The Manga, illustrated by Tsutomu Nihei, are unmistakable. It's hard pressed to Find any games similar to the Blame! superstructure genre, let alone huge megastructure/ exploration walking sim games. And I am so glad to have found this game on a whim! The pixel art is phenomenal, Love Indie pixel art games, and the story is so great, relating back to Blame! it took 800 hours (A Month) for the antagonist to traverse areas. This game makes that world feel so grounded, so human, so much bigger in perspective, so much dangerous, so much more love and hate, the adult story and the subtle hints to what's coming next!! Cannot Wait for chapter 3 I'm literally so restless, I think ill replay the whole game again and again! Best indie Story Game i've played So far. 100/10 Indie Game! Should be illegal that its free.
This game is sick can't believe it's free, drops you into an interesting setting with beautiful 2d art. Then it shows the combat and its a quite indepth 2d turn action system where you have to think fast with your decesions. Really amazing how they did the art/music/story for this game it really makes it feel like an indepth world
