Although I've played and enjoyed the developers' three games in the Deed series, I didn't know about their other games (including this one) until recently. The Deed games are all about combining items, locations and time-lines to bring about a perfect crime for reward, revenge and/or to frame another character. A Sceptic's Guide to Magic is a much more linear RPG pixel-graphics game in that there is only one pathway through it until the final stages when choices leading to different (and mutually-exclusive) endings can be made. However, what it loses in freedom of action, A Sceptic's Guide makes up for in terms of a strong overarching story, and multiple locations & characters. A Sceptic's Guide is an RPG pixel-graphics game about a forensic scientist becoming involved in the world of magic while investigating a ritual murder, and developing his own unsuspected magical abilities. At various points he must master new spells in order to delve deeper into the crime, the suspects, and their motivations. Spells are learned from other characters or from books etc, but then have to be prepared by gathering their ingredients plus the "apparatus" items by which they are invoked. Items & ingredients can be purchased/traded (for actions or other items) from shops/businesses run by side characters, or found in gardens, woods, buildings etc. Finding people or things is where this game can be most frustrating, because of the repeated cycle of getting to a vehicle, then using the triggered map to select & move to a destination, then moving from the vehicle to a building, field etc, and finally trying to find the required character/ingredient/item. I spent so much time saving and leaving the game, opening XBL Laberbacke's invaluable guide (which I could not access in-game through the Steam console, or so it seemed) to find out where (or how) a particular ingredient or item could be found, and then re-entering the game to continue. There is an entertaining dark, adult humour running through the game, and low-resolution but emotive pixel graphics depictions of characters, locations, gore etc. I also thought that the sound and music were very apt and complementary to the story. There are achievements for casting each new spell and for each ending, and a more light-hearted bonus chapter once the main game is finished. I bought this game and Sentience: The Android's Tale for a combined 85% discounted price of UK £1.23; given my play time for A Sceptic's Guide and my overall enjoyment of it, I've obtained excellent value for money even before playing Sentience at all.
This is a good game, you go back and forth from one location to another and either get some items or use them on something to advance the plot. The plot is rather good. Problem: it has so many loading times which are also long, it's as if I played Witcher 1 all over again! It takes less time sometimes to load a Witcher 3 save than it takes for the loading screen to disappear after changing locations!

Amusing puzzle solver, you have to think things through about where you saw items and check things out thoroughly but not a lot of super repetitive grinding. Fun story.
This is a 2D top down retro pixel JRPG/RPG Maker styled adventure game with a supernatural/crime theme. The developers claim to be using point and click mechanics similar to LucasArts/Sierra adventures but this is a blatant lie, the game is a JRPG ripoff using a crappy retro pixel Final Fantasy look. It's inexplicable why the developers are so out of touch with both retro and modern gaming at the same time. They chose to use obsolete retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result. Crappy graphics and crappy gameplay with no real evidence the developers are capable of making any kind of modern PC game, confirmed by the way they dumped this into bargain basement shovelware bundles make this completely impossible to recommend.
Told my bro magic is fake, he turned my six pack into kittens. Beat it in one pizza, now I believe in cards and quantum crap. Best cure for boring skeptic bones.
An excellent example of what someone with talent and dedication can do with RPG Maker! You have a mystery to solve and are slowly (or maybe quickly, all things considered!) drawn into a world of magic when a young man is murdered. You gather ingredients in a sort of puzzle-solving method, and then craft various spells to uncover the mystery. Four different endings and a bonus chapter as well! Honestly this game is a steal at full price, and an absolute must purchase at any sale price.
