While the moment to moment traversal of the House can be a bit tedious at times, the staggering creativity of the writing more than makes up for it.
I'm impressed by the number of different location, characters and stories. Don't play this game before your final exams or else you will be doomed.
Why have I never reviewed this???? It's crazy how many of the games that I thought were the most brilliant, I forget to review. Sorry about that. Anyway, this game oozes the spirit of Lovecraft in a way that few people could ever dream of. It isn't trying to copy a lovecraft story or merely take the aesthetics, it is like the essence of distilled cosmic horror in a unique setting with brilliant writing. The combat isn't the greatest though (and not something you should even attempt for many hours). Unique and just great.

I was intrigued enough to try to figure out the unintuitive gameplay despite the mediocre tutorials, but the game is also kind of glitchy, Seems like an interesting concept, but needs better execution.
The game has a banger opening introduction, but in less than an hour of playing, the game has crashed twice. I do not want to constantly be taken out of the atmosphere that the game attempts to provide because it crashes to desktop so often and risks your progress being lost. There are also circles that you click on that serve as tutorials, of a sort, and the text doesn't seem to scale with the options to make text bigger. It's rather difficult to read because of how small it is.
This is one of my favourite steam games I have ever played. The worldbuilding is fantastic, so much so that when I played sunless sea and sunless skies afterwards, they left me bored and wanting more.
Worth it. So very worth it.
Fun but it's already crashed on me 5 times in the first hour of play
Sunless Seas / skies but with turn based ftl lite combat.
Absolutely wonderful writing (I can't overstate how good it is), dense Lovecraftian atmosphere and weird moral choices make this an easy recommendation. Despite the mediocre combat & sluggish pace of exploration (which can easily and quickly be fixed via mods and/or cheats, but I didn't even bother with those because I was so engrossed), I have nothing but fondness and admiration for this game and the developer who made it. It's been updated since I last played it, too, so the experience has improved. I'll amend my review when I play the updated version. I liked it even better than Sunless Sea and Sunless Skies. It dispenses with much of the tedium of the former and I think the worldbuilding is somehow more strange , mysterious and mesmerising than Sunless Skies. It's a gem and it deserves *way* more attention.
