Reviews
A little shorter than I expected & sometimes a bit hand-holdy (in terms of how boldly it indicates when you've unlocked the ability to perform a new action in a specific room) but still fun!
A very enjoyable text adventure. Great atmosphere with satisfying puzzles. Solid as an adaptation too: Elegant interface, encountered no bugs.
in the first run I made some choices that lead to a dull ending. it is very annoying that you have to play from the start to unlock other endings.
49 Keys, developed by Michele Buonanno in collaboration with Veronica Wu and Fabio Porfidia and published by 2P Games, is an atmospheric and intricately crafted puzzle-adventure game that plunges players into a deeply esoteric and unsettling experience. Drawing from Buonanno’s own gamebook 49 Chiavi, the game manages to translate a complex, symbol-laden narrative into an interactive medium without compromising its thematic richness. Set in the 16th century, the story follows a Dominican friar summoned by a cryptic letter to a remote, decaying estate once owned by his late master. What begins as a simple inheritance quickly unravels into a spiral of supernatural phenomena, alchemical enigmas, and theological dread. The sense of mystery is palpable from the very beginning, and the game never lets go of that tension. At its core, 49 Keys is a narrative-driven puzzle game, steeped in historical mysticism and occult philosophy. The gameplay flows in the style of classic point-and-click adventures, where exploration and careful observation are essential. You’re expected to interact with strange relics, decode ancient texts, and engage with puzzles that go beyond surface-level logic. Many puzzles are layered in meaning and draw on real-world alchemical symbology and numerology, creating a cerebral experience that rewards patience and curiosity. The eponymous 49 keys are more than just literal objects; they represent trials, decisions, and aspects of a deeper metaphysical structure woven into the narrative. Every item you find and every note you read has the potential to influence your path, and the game allows for multiple endings based on the choices you make, some of which are subtle and easily overlooked. What truly elevates 49 Keys is its presentation. The visual design pays meticulous homage to medieval manuscripts and Renaissance artwork. The game’s interface, maps, journals, and illustrations are all styled in a way that feels authentic to the era while remaining functionally modern. These hand-drawn elements are not just decorative—they often contain critical clues that tie into the puzzles. The auditory design complements the aesthetic beautifully. A haunting, minimal soundtrack underscores the isolation and dread, while subtle ambient sounds create a quiet tension that lingers in every room and corridor. These production elements combine to deliver an experience that feels not only immersive but also historically grounded in tone and texture. Despite its strengths, the game isn’t without its hurdles. It is deliberately slow-paced, and some players may find that it leans too heavily on exposition and reading. Long passages of text and philosophical monologues can test the patience of those looking for more immediate engagement. Additionally, while the puzzles are thoughtfully constructed, they occasionally rely on abstract reasoning or obscure references that may frustrate players unfamiliar with the real-world occult and alchemical sources the game draws upon. It’s not always obvious what needs to be done next, and because the game avoids hand-holding, this can lead to moments of stagnation. That said, these aspects may be seen not as flaws, but as intentional choices designed to filter the experience to a specific audience—those who enjoy decoding rather than consuming. 49 Keys is a work of thematic depth and intellectual ambition. It doesn’t follow the trends of most horror or puzzle games; instead, it carves out a space of its own, somewhere between a digital manuscript and an interactive fever dream. Its horror is not loud or grotesque, but cerebral and spiritual—concerned more with existential dread, divine silence, and the madness of truth-seeking than with jump scares. It will likely appeal most to players who value storytelling, symbolism, and puzzle mechanics that require more than trial and error. With its distinct visual language, unsettling narrative, and commitment to its esoteric roots, 49 Keys stands out as a thoughtful, immersive, and often haunting adventure into the unknown. Rating: 7/10
