Resident Evil Gaiden: Remake
this in a nutshell is tell me your resident evil inspired without saying it and honestly this game has the most interesting mechanics as a survival horror game that i've ever seen in all my time playing horror games throughout the years. honestly its really fun and i really like it
You Will Die Here Tonight seamlessly fuses top-down exploration with visceral, arcade-style first-person shooting to revitalise classic survival horror tropes. Navigating through the haunting corridors of Breckenridge Estate forces players to manage scarce ammunition and first-aid supplies while uncovering a dark biological weapons plot involving corporate simulation protocols. Shifting perspective dynamically into first-person combat when encountering infected monsters creates an engaging contrast with isometric environmental navigation. Blasting through threats with shotguns, magnums, submachine guns, and grenade launchers delivers weighty audio and visual feedback that rewards precise marksmanship during tense encounters. Permadeath mechanics organically shift control to surviving squad members whenever an officer perishes, carrying over key inventory items and narrative progress. Discovering that these character deaths and meta-textual loops actively recontextualise the overarching mystery transforms early survival panic into a structured, highly engaging investigation. Nostalgic puzzle design emulates classic nineties conventions by requiring players to collect specific keys and solve intricate environmental emblem puzzles. While mathematical clues occasionally feel overly explicit, searching interconnected mansion corridors for hidden pathways keeps the momentum steady despite occasional navigational backtracking. Fixed movement speeds across different squad members introduce noticeable pacing variations when transitioning between faster and slower officers. Unforgiving boss encounters rely on trial-and-error damage patterns that can cause sudden fatalities, though mastering workbench shortcuts and permanent weapon upgrades drastically improves survival odds. Clean pixel-art environments merge effortlessly with detailed three-dimensional transitions to maintain visual clarity throughout intense multi-enemy battles. Ambient horror soundscapes and evolving character commentary reinforce a creepy atmosphere, ensuring frame rates remain rock solid even during dramatic environmental lighting changes. Overall, workbench tuning and permanent weapon enhancements transform early survival tension into a fast-paced, deeply satisfying campaign conclusion. Navigating squad permadeath loops alongside arcade shooting mechanics delivers a refreshing hybrid design that constantly rewards clever spatial management and methodical resource conservation.
Picked it up on sale for $6 and some change and so far I've ben getting my moneys worth out of it. Combat isn't to difficult once you get a feel for timings. The writing is very cheesy but I feel thats part of the charm. I'm not finished with the story itself, as it seems the final boss fight isn't the ending proper but I've had a lot of fun. There were some cheap deaths my first time through that were very frustrating, but all in all still worth the money. Worth $20 full price? Maybe? Absolutely worth picking up when it goeson sale though.
80 / 100
very nice puzzle-ish, retro-styled, surprising, mechanics-combining thriller game. Highly recommend.
It's Resident Evil meets House of the Dead with a Diablo isometric graphic style. What's not to love?! Just be prepared to die a lot. It's ok, that's all part of the game.
