Yonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles
I saw this on sale and jumped on the really low price. Mistake! I spent the start of the game constantly trying to adjust the setting so the camera wouldn't swing me all over the place. Too late, I got dizzy and developed a headache. I turned down the camera sensitivity as low as it would go, and it still makes me dizzy. No other game has done that. The game seems washed out to me and the characters look plastic. Apparently, you can't sleep in the game, so if it's night time, you just continue on. I don't like playing in the dark. I like sunshine. I'm going to try to hang in there, but I don't know. I don't like this game at all.
Review is based on the question "would I recommend this to other people." not "is the game objectively bad or good." Thanks. things I liked about the game: - the fact that in certain seasons the environment changed, like the water being lower in a pond so you could reach a previously inaccessible chest. - the barter system rather than having a currency is neat. - forest area is very pretty - hitboxes in the game were well coded - i like any game that has changing seasons in general (though this could've used some more differentiation rather than just whether it's raining or snowing) - the idea of having different areas in the game pay more or less for different types of items because those areas produce certain types of products is GREAT. I really like that! unfortunately it's not implemented super well, but I really liked the idea and would like to see that in more games that have open worlds with buying and selling various goods. - I am glad you can go to towns and get stuff like keystones and cobblestone because wow it takes a LOT of resources to make those yourself - shiny hair :) - exploration is well rewarded! There's almost always something to find if you poke around. I like that. If you have a open world, there should be things to see in it. Not PACKED FULL like some games are, but there should be little details to find. things I did not like about the game: - the map is extremely annoying to navigate in some areas with the number of vertical drops that need to be made when you do not and will not have an upwards vertical movement option - the movement of the animals after you tame them drives me insane. they either amble along slowly or hop and slide sideways for some reason. Also they can't seem to go over bridges. - two types of fast travel exist, neither of which take you to settlements. Baffling choice. - crops are wildly unbalanced. You can get anything you want in the entire game for a handful of berries and potatoes. The whole 'buying and selling at different prices in different areas' thing would be way more interesting and fun to engage with if you couldn't just buy your way to victory because every crop is worth 50. You hand someone nine potatoes and get a whole building in return. It's silly. - gathering resources can get tedious and irritating but luckily you can buy a lot of stuff - quests handhold like crazy except for when they don't update to tell you that you've completed an objective (i think this only happened once, though). There is a flashing dashed line on the minimap to guide you to your next goal. - animal variety is limited (but sufficient). Environmental detail is nice but it does suffer from the problem of "i KNOW that the only reason this interesting thing is here is because it's related to a quest" and there are very few things just naturally out in the world that are interesting and unique. - the troll village is quite possibly the most embarrassing and juvenile thing I have ever seen a game dev actually include in their game. what were they thinking? there's nothing quite like wandering into a spot to watch the devs have a toddler meltdown over some honestly very tame negative feedback, and a tantrum SO SEVERE that they felt the need to add new models and code a new area in the game JUST to literally put this feedback on a series of pedestals and surround it with little models of poop. That's cringe. It makes me cringe. I don't have any other way to say that. Do not do this. Nobody should do this. things I am not sure about: - what is the point of having a sprite companion? they pop up next to you sometimes and I have no idea why. I'm not mad about it or anything I just have no idea what's going on there - It tells you the season in the bottom left of the screen. Either I just missed that for hours on end and that's my fault or it only appeared later in the game. Probably the former. But it would've helped if I'd seen that while doing that freaking scarecrow quest - ??? green portal ??? - what was up with that random halloween event? verdict: would not recommend this to my friends, no, since this is on the same level of intellectual engagement as a your average "merge (thing)" mobile game. I'm only getting all achievements because it seems like it might be very easy to do. i might recommend it to strangers if their thing is a game you don't have to think about much and is very cutesy and lighthearted. The game isn't bad. It's just not really for me or the people I recommend games to, and the troll thing REALLY put me off.
I have to grudgingly give this game a thumbs down. I quite liked the developer's other game "Grow: Song of the Evertree", but this one was developed first and it shows. This game was good enough for me to beat it, but there are too many issues. It does have nice graphics and some cute animals, but too many things bugged me: - I had almost beaten the game by the time I found out there's an item you can craft cheaply that'll let you teleport to any farm - You can't sleep, in your farms or elsewhere. So if you'd rather wait until day when it's light, too bad - There's a woman in every town who appears to have a quest for you, but does not. I have no idea what her purpose is. - The spirit stones act as a second mode of fast travel, but they're almost exclusively placed out of the way, being either hard to get to or not near towns/other place you'll want to go to. - One of the main goals is to clear the murk, which requires sprites. Unlike what you'd expect (the farther you progress the more sprites you need) it's more or less random. - You'll get to points in the story where you don't have enough sprites to clear murk to get to a story objective. There's not much for you to do at this point than wonder around the map until you find more sprites. - Farms seem a bit pointless. Their main purpose seems to be to generate resources for you, which to be fair you need a lot of, but they're a pain to set up. - If you don't set up the right farms, you'll find yourself doing a lot of grinding, especially for stone. I didn't even know that was something animals could generate until I looked it up now after beating the game. - I did like the trade system, but it became annoying after a while trying to get the right combination of stuff to sell to add up to what I bought. I frequently ended up overpaying because I couldn't be bothered. It also didn't always make sense that merchants would be willing to buy what I was trading them. - There are a few completionist type things (collecting cats, planting all of the trees) that are unrealistic to complete without a guide - There are a lot of places to plant trees, but as far as I can tell you can only buy tree seeds, there's no other way to get them. Not all merchants have them, and those that do often don't have many. Overall I can understand why people would enjoy this game. It's a good one to turn your brain off and listen to an audiobook or something. However, with a better tutorial and some more thought I think it could have been much better. Verdict: 6/10
- It's relaxing - It's fun - No HP - No death - No double jump - No time limit on anything - Adventuring at your own pace Add a few sandbox features and you'll double the fun. More tutorials will be very helpful.
Visually the game is nice but it seems unfinished and poorly paced. There is no reason to craft 90% of the items in the game as you can just grow potatoes and trade them for any items you may need from vendors and the main quest can be completed without interacting with most of the world. Other games balance this by giving you the ability to build interesting bases but the building is so limited here that it doesn't make you want to actually go through the hassle of unlocking any of the decor items. Overall, a game of wasted potential where there's a 10 hour build up to nothing and then it's over, but if you just want something to mindlessly play for 10 hrs then it's ok I guess.
Not recommended unless you like aimless exploring without any real engaging objectives.
Hunt down animals, but don't kill them! Cause you can't.
At first I wasn't sure about this game. Actually, I'm still not sure about this game. I'm also not sure how I managed to play through the entire thing. I'm not usually into farming sims, but Yonder is far more of an open-world adventure game than a farming sim. There is no combat whatsoever. No monsters to slay. No bandits to fight. No wildlife to accidentally turn into dinner. Instead, it's a relaxing collectathon mixed with light farming, creature collecting, crafting, and questing. The animals you collect mostly end up helping produce resources for quests and farms. The world of Yonder is built entirely around peace, positivity, and exploration. It's beautiful, charming, and surprisingly relaxing to wander around in. I'm still not entirely sure why I enjoyed it as much as I did, but somehow I did. Extremely fun. I like finding the sprites and cats the most. There's tons to do in this game. The music is awesome and it's easy to play.
I want an option of not bad or good but... inbetween. It's cute. The graphics are pretty. It's a simple, engaging game. But the gameplay is really not well thought out. Quests constantly prioritising over each other. Using the compass meaning the whole character stops. Crafting is a grind of making low level stuff to make higher level suff. Navigating is incredibly bad. I got this game cheap and I'll get my money's worth from it, but unless it's pretty cheap, I really wouldn't get this. There are other games do similar, better.
