Good
still good in 2k26, babey
good
I have never been more torn on a review than I have been with Yakuza 0. I love(d) the game, at some point. There is amazing story telling, funny side characters, great main characters and despite reading the whole game in English, I felt emotionally attached. The problem is the combat was SO BAD. This isn’t a “git gud” thing. It is categorically unfun and bad. There is nothing fun about button smashing and then when the enemy decides they want to hit you then they get to. And this really all came to fruition in the finale. When you fought room after room and then they randomly add 3 guys with guns who just aim and shoot and take a quarter of your health. It was badly designed and made the combat the LEAST enjoyable aspect of an overall fantastic game. THE GOODS: I feel like the developers were thinking “lets take all the greatness of a GTA game and condense it into 5 blocks of a Japanese city” and it WORKS. There is so much happening, so many side missions, so many games, so many things you can dip into. I found myself spending so much time in the opening chapters just meeting everyone and trying to do every little mission. And to be honest, its mostly all good. Typically you would have a situation where they do lots of things but nothing done well. Bowling, darts, mahjong, karaoke, batting cages, racing, poker, there was so much. I actually just realized I didn’t actually do the batting cages, or racing. And then there is a story. You may not know how you’d respond to reading all the dialogue. You might feel more attached or less. I also wasn’t sure and then got my answer. I felt real attachment and I just wanted these boys to get out all right. Great story, it all came together. And while I don’t think I would play Y1-Y5, I want to watch a vid to see how they are all connected and how it concludes. THE BADS: The combat! I already covered it, so uninteresting and boring. 3 fighting styles for each character but really only 1 or 2 are even viable. Punch punch kick repeat snooze. Enemies are uninteresting, they bring weapons that do funny things but THE OVERALLS: OOF….I just don’t know if I can recommend this game. The combat is so frustrating. But everything else is so so good. I will give this a thumbs up and for how old the game is, my opinion means very little.
