Hmmm...after an hour of testing - didn't actually achieve anything worthy of note (or see any of the content seen in the videos). The demo videos make it look amazing and quick/easy to create and popoulate detailed maps with animated/equipped characters. Looks like a dream come true - in reality, it's far from it. After following the help-guide, I was left randomly clicking through the un-intuitive UI filled with empty windows (or windows with obscure options which didn't seem to do anything when I toggled them on/off). The eye-catching automation seen in the videos is pretty much none-existent and generating maps will leave you feeling underwhelmed. It's possible that with more time invested into learning the UI, I could create something with it but I may as well invest the time learning UnrealEngine and make the content there for myself. Feels a bit mis-sold to be honest. No disrespect for the work which has gone into it - but the UI definitely needs a major overhaul otherwise people wont actually ever get to see what's under the hood. The text (for example) is unread-ably tiny.
I use this regularly to stream tabletop stuff on Twitch and it works GREAT. If you want something more immersive than the prevalent 2D platforms, YAG really has a lot to offer. Your players can go First Person, Third Person, or even top down if they want. Flexibility and the already multiple updates are just two of the perks offered by using YAG. It does take some additional prep on the front end from your GM building out your maps, but once they are built you can save them. The good news is you can make massive changes with the very easy to use terrain tools. I personally think it's a fair trade off for the level of immersion. So why not tabletop simulator? That's the big question. I find this easier to use when making characters and maps. The amount of game models for people, animals, bugs, and more is astounding. That includes weapons from daggers to siege weapons too. There is an enormous level of customization available. The maps you can custom make, or use procedural generation. You can alter maps in drastic ways with literally just a few clicks. Not to mention this is purpose-built for tabletop RPGs, and the tools it offers are geared toward that. I think if you're specifically looking for something to do tabletop RPGs, this is going to be the superior product.
Honest Review - All that "bad" first: So, let me start off by saying this game has a very steep learning curve for DMs/builders. There are tutorial videos, which help some, however the videos are for an older version of the software and feature a slightly different UI as well as some different keyboard shortcuts. The button images aren't very easy to understand, you can however over each one for an explanation, but some of the explanations don't make much sense for a new user. The "Good": All that said, once you do finally start getting the hang of the UI and understand what everything does and how it works, this really is great software and I highly recommend it. It's honestly good enough that especially now with the pandemic and lots of online D&D happening it should be a mainstream platform. There's so much you can do with this, especially if you're clever, to make some really amazing online tabletop sessions, and I really do recommend it for anyone playing online right now. Suggestions: (and bare in mind I'm still learning the software so some suggestions might actually already be in game but I haven't figured them out yet) - There needs to be a "DM Mode" and a "Player Mode". I feel the thing that is mainly preventing this from being more mainstream is the ability for players to just drop in and play without having to lean complex software. All the complex map building stuff and etc on the DM side is fine, but players want to be able to just join a session and move their character around. They don't care about all the numerous menus and other features us DMs care about. My players love the look of the game but were super hesitant to switch away from Roll20 because of how complex it was. -- "Player Mode" should have an extremely simple interface, and some different controls. Something like an up-front 2D/3D map toggle, character camera lock-on/follow, and much simpler camera controls, IE mousewheel zoom in/out, left click select/move, right click and hold to rotate camera. -- "A Free Player Mode"? The other hard sell for a DM is "hey everyone go spend money on this." Mind you the game is VERY reasonably priced, but I hate telling my players to spend money just to play with me, especially when free options like Roll20 exist. I would be in favor of some kind of DM Package that maybe included 4 copies of a "lite" version of the game that only contained Player Mode and no map building or such, and would be willing to pay more for my copy if it came with Player Mode copies I could give out to my players. No idea how difficult that would be for the creator (probably very), but something along those lines would make this platform way more accessible for more players. - Let me import custom models. (this might already be possible somewhere and I just haven't figured it out yet?). I understand the human models have a lot of animations and mechanics that would make this difficult, and that's fine, but let me at least import static models like a chair or something. You can build great custom maps but even with the DLCs the options can be pretty limiting if you want something specific. If I could import an .stl or something that would be incredibly helpful. Overall, highly recommended. The game is surprisingly well optimized for what it is and there's very little lagging even on very large and complex maps. I haven't really encountered many bugs or crashes yet other than me not knowing what I'm doing and trying to create a map about 1,000 times bigger than I should. Some little things here and there like swords not fitting perfectly in the characters hand and stuff, but I'm pretty sure this is being made by either one person or an extremely small team so all very reasonable. I hope the creator continues to release models and assets for this and keeps the game updated, it would be a shame if it was dead in the water at this point with so much potential.
Yag is a beautiful alternative Virtual Tabletop to play your favorite roleplaying games. Always in development, YAG has a great potential.
If you are a tabletop rpg fan, this is a fantastic tool. In the short time that I have explored the how this system works, I can already see how easy and intuitive it is to get an hand crafted atmospheric rpg experience. That being said, at first it doesn't seem very intuitive, the ui is a bit cluttered. Once you have the ui figured out though, it really is a fun and easy tool to use. I highly recommend it!
I'm a veteran tabletop role playing gamer and VTT user. I have run and played a lot of games and used a lot of what's popular out there for a VTT solution. Please take this into account when I say that for scene building and immersion, this tool excels above those others. But...it does take some dedicated time invested up-front to establish your settings as you'd like, watch through all the many tutorials out there, from getting started to more complex options during scene building as you go, and creating your own initial content. As you go though and get more proficient, this goes faster and faster. During my game sessions, I can now generate a random 256 x 256 meter zone of whatever terrain type, composite, and foliage I want, put the party members where I want them, and add something for them to "encounter" in about as much time as it would take me to go grab all my preset maps, tokens, and props at the game table back when we had the luxury to all be together in person! It also helps a ton with 3D/Z-axis situations, like flying characters, cliff elevation, or declines in dungeons or carvernous delves. Players can join your session with their own copy of Yag and the game master can assign them their pawns to control. This solution does not have its own sound or voice comms so be prepared to use another option for that, (like Voicemeeter + Virtual Audio Cables + Voicemod + Web Audio + Discord for example which is what I do).

Best virtual tabletop, imho. Also, the maker of YAG is the nicest man.
