it's ok, i guess. however, considering that enemies attack from all sides and angles, it might be helpful to attack in all directions. instead, you are stuck only attacking horizontally, and any enemy that can attack vertically has a rather stupid advantage. what, these robots can't attack upwards? it is a really silly and arbitrary mechanic that does not work with the rest of the game.

OMG!!! This game is AWESOME!! SO much going on, all of it a blast to play!! REALLY glad I stumbled accross this as a sale item, but easily worth full price!! In my short list of faves already, and I'm early on into having/playing XO-Planets. Easily recommend!!!! :D
Tried it twice, had no clue what was going on, plus a bad crash. Discussion group implies the game has been abandoned. No easy more, no tutorial. Cannot in good conscience recommend this one unless it is for free. Four thumbs down.
bro game is dead af, looked nice but they just stopped working on it.
It feels like a blend of Risk of Rain with elements of Spelunky, all wrapped up in a pixellated nightmare. With some more gameplay tweaks and some difficulty balancing, this has every chance of being one of the best platformers out there.
This game was abandoned years ago and is still in early access. It's missing too many essential features, including graphics and controls. Shame. Refunded.
Sometimes the Best Space Adventures Are the Quiet Ones

# 🇺🇸 English 👍 **Recommended** ## 🎮 First Impressions I went into **XO-Planets** expecting a small, relaxing indie game, and that's exactly what I got—in the best possible way. It doesn't try to overwhelm you with dozens of complicated systems or endless tutorials. Instead, it focuses on exploration, gradual progression, and letting you enjoy the journey at your own pace. Before I realized it, I had already spent a few hours saying, *"I'll just explore one more planet."* --- ## 🔥 Gameplay The gameplay loop is surprisingly satisfying. Explore planets, collect resources, upgrade your ship, unlock new opportunities, and repeat. It sounds simple on paper, but the progression keeps giving you reasons to continue. One thing I really appreciated is how approachable everything feels. The mechanics are easy to understand, yet upgrading your equipment always feels meaningful because it opens new possibilities instead of just increasing numbers. It's the kind of game that's very easy to lose track of time with. --- ## 🎨 Graphics & Audio The art style fits the game perfectly. Every planet has its own personality, the color palette makes exploration enjoyable, and the overall presentation creates a relaxing atmosphere without trying too hard. The soundtrack deserves credit as well. It's subtle, calming, and complements the exploration beautifully without becoming repetitive. Performance was smooth throughout my playthrough, which made the experience even more enjoyable. --- ## ⚖️ Difficulty & Progression Progression is easily one of the strongest parts of the game. Every upgrade feels worthwhile, constantly giving you new goals and making exploration more rewarding. The difficulty stays accessible while still maintaining a satisfying sense of accomplishment, and it never feels like you're grinding just to make progress. --- ## 🧩 Fun & Replayability The game fully embraces its relaxing pace. There's always another planet worth visiting, another upgrade to unlock, or another small objective waiting around the corner. Even after several hours, the exploration loop remains engaging simply because the game always gives you one more reason to keep going. --- ## ✅ Final Verdict **XO-Planets** knows exactly what kind of game it wants to be, and it succeeds because of that. Instead of chasing complexity, it delivers a polished and relaxing exploration experience with a rewarding progression loop that keeps you coming back. If you enjoy space exploration, steady progression, and games that let you unwind without becoming boring, this one is definitely worth your time. **⭐ Recommended for fans of relaxing exploration games, satisfying progression, and laid-back space adventures.**

XO-Planets is a fast-paced indie roguelite that combines side-scrolling platforming, procedural exploration, RPG progression, and chaotic combat into a surprisingly ambitious sci-fi experience. Developed and published by Bohfam, the game throws players onto dangerous alien worlds filled with hostile creatures, randomized loot, environmental hazards, and constant opportunities for experimentation. While it clearly carries the rough edges of a smaller indie project, XO-Planets manages to deliver an addictive gameplay loop driven by mobility, weapon variety, and nonstop replayability. The game’s premise is relatively simple but effective enough for the genre. Players control advanced AI-controlled recon units sent to hostile exoplanets in order to eliminate alien threats and recover valuable resources. The narrative itself remains fairly light and mostly exists to support the gameplay structure rather than provide deep storytelling. Instead of focusing heavily on cinematic presentation or emotional character development, XO-Planets prioritizes gameplay systems, progression, and procedural chaos. The result is an experience that feels constantly focused on action and experimentation. What immediately stands out about XO-Planets is the sheer number of mechanics packed into its gameplay structure. At its core, the game is a roguelite platformer where players fight through procedurally generated environments filled with enemies, loot, and bosses. However, the game also incorporates RPG-style permanent upgrades, randomized weapon generation, tower defense mechanics, AI modifications, and mobility-focused progression systems. Despite sounding overly complicated on paper, these mechanics generally blend together surprisingly well and help create a gameplay loop that remains engaging over long sessions. Movement is easily one of the strongest aspects of the experience. As players progress, they gradually unlock abilities such as dashes, double jumps, wall climbing, teleportation, and jetpack enhancements that completely transform traversal and combat. The vertical design of the levels works extremely well alongside these upgrades because movement becomes faster and more satisfying as the player gains stronger mobility tools. Traversing dangerous alien environments while chaining jumps and avoiding enemy attacks eventually becomes one of the most enjoyable parts of the game. Combat is equally chaotic and rewarding once players become familiar with the mechanics. XO-Planets offers a large variety of weapons including swords, rifles, sniper weapons, launchers, axes, and energy-based firearms. Most equipment is procedurally generated with different modifiers and stat variations, encouraging players to constantly experiment with new loadouts during runs. Elemental effects such as fire, ice, poison, and life-stealing abilities add additional depth to combat encounters. The action becomes especially intense during larger battles where enemy swarms and environmental hazards force players to stay mobile at all times. The roguelite structure contributes heavily to the game’s replayability. Since levels, enemy placement, loot drops, and missions are procedurally generated, each run feels slightly different from the last. Side objectives such as bounty hunts, defense missions, treasure collection, and exploration tasks help add extra variety beyond simple combat progression. This randomness keeps the experience fresh because players are constantly adapting to new situations and equipment combinations. Long-term progression is handled through permanent upgrade systems tied to resources collected during runs. Players can spend these resources to unlock stronger abilities, improve survivability, and gain access to additional playable recon units with different strengths and playstyles. This mixture of temporary roguelite progression and permanent character growth creates a satisfying sense of advancement even after repeated failures. Every unsuccessful run still contributes toward future improvement, which helps soften the frustration of the game’s higher difficulty levels. Visually, XO-Planets uses a neon-inspired pixel art style that gives the game a distinct science-fiction identity. Dark alien landscapes are contrasted with glowing projectiles, colorful enemy effects, and bright environmental lighting that constantly fill the screen during combat. The retro-inspired presentation fits the game’s chaotic energy well and helps create memorable environments despite the relatively simple pixel art structure. However, the sheer amount of visual effects can occasionally become overwhelming during more intense encounters. The soundtrack complements the gameplay effectively with energetic electronic music and retro sci-fi inspired tracks that reinforce the fast pace of exploration and combat. Combined with aggressive enemy sounds and rapid movement effects, the audio design helps maintain constant momentum throughout each run. The game rarely feels slow or quiet for very long, which supports its frantic gameplay style. Unfortunately, XO-Planets also suffers from a noticeable lack of polish in certain areas. The onboarding process is fairly rough, and new players are often thrown into complex mechanics with minimal explanation. Early difficulty spikes can feel overwhelming because enemy aggression and movement-heavy combat require quick adaptation. The controls also take time to fully understand, particularly once advanced movement abilities begin stacking together during longer runs. The game’s storytelling is another weaker element. While the sci-fi setting provides decent atmosphere, the narrative itself lacks emotional depth and memorable character development. Most players will likely stay invested because of the gameplay systems rather than the story or world-building. Some interface elements and menus also feel slightly cluttered, occasionally making progression systems more confusing than necessary. Despite these shortcomings, XO-Planets succeeds because of its ambition and replay-focused design. It combines multiple genres into a highly energetic experience filled with experimentation, progression, and intense combat. The combination of procedural generation, weapon variety, mobility upgrades, and difficult encounters creates a gameplay loop that can become surprisingly addictive for players willing to learn its systems. For fans of roguelites, indie action platformers, and procedurally generated sci-fi adventures, XO-Planets offers a chaotic but rewarding experience packed with replay value and customization. It may not have the refinement or accessibility of larger roguelite titles, but its ambitious mechanics and fast-paced gameplay give it a distinct personality that helps it stand out within the indie action genre.
