Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem — “Diablo 3 at home” with CryEngine drip (Linux test + first 2 hours)
Playtime (this session): ~2 hours Platform: Linux (Windows-only game, so Proton/Wine setup) Engine: CryEngine 3 ARPG background: I’ve played enough Diablo-style games to smell the inspiration instantly.

TL;DR
Wolcen is a gorgeous-looking ARPG that (so far) feels like an easier, smoother-brained Diablo 3 clone wearing a CryEngine graphics coat. The first hours are playable and can be fun if you just want loot explosions and screen-clearing skills, but the game’s reputation is basically: amazing potential + rough execution + years of “why is this still broken?” energy. If you buy it: get it on a deep sale and go in expecting jank, not a genre king.

First 2 hours — My honest vibe
I’m early, so this is “first impression” territory, but the DNA is obvious:

Combat loop screams “Diablo 3-inspired” (movement → pack → skills → loot → repeat).
It feels easier than I expected — less punishing, less demanding, more “turn brain off”.
The visuals and effects are doing a LOT of heavy lifting. The game wants to impress you with spectacle early.
It’s not trash in the first hours. It’s just… not original. It’s like someone studied Diablo 3 and PoE, then tried to land in the middle — but without the depth that makes those games stick long-term.

Graphics & Art Direction
This is Wolcen’s strongest weapon.

High-quality lighting and materials (CryEngine flex).
Spells and effects look expensive and punchy.
Dark fantasy vibes with a Warhammer-ish / Doom-ish edge in places.
Even people who hate the game tend to admit it looks good. That tracks with my experience.

Combat Feel (aka “the clunk question”)
Here’s the thing: early on it feels playable, but Wolcen has a long-standing reputation for:

Animation lock / input delay feeling
Combat sometimes feeling “muddy” instead of snappy
Balance being all over the place depending on build/patch
In my 2-hour window I didn’t hit the worst of it yet — but I’m going in with my eyes open because the community history around this is LOUD.

Builds, Skills & Identity
Wolcen’s big claim has always been “flexible builds” — the rotating passive wheel / “Gates of Fate” style system. In theory: that’s cool. In practice (from years of community feedback): a lot of nodes have been buggy / unclear / unexciting, and the game often drifts into “stack the meta ailment / god build or suffer”. My early impression:

It’s fun to tinker, but it also feels like the game wants you to follow a “works or doesn’t work” path.
It doesn’t scream “deep” like PoE.
It doesn’t scream “polished and consistent” like Diablo 3.
So you end up with this weird identity crisis: a gorgeous ARPG that sometimes feels like it’s cosplaying the big dogs instead of being its own beast.

Story & Presentation
Wikipedia summary vibe (and what the game is going for): dark fantasy, 3-act structure, you’re tied to the Purifiers and a larger conflict. The community consensus over time has been mixed:

Some say story/cinematics are a highlight.
Others call it generic or unfinished-feeling.
I’m too early to judge story properly, so I’m not going to pretend I finished Acts and endgame when I didn’t.

CryEngine 3 — why it matters (and why you feel it)
I don’t have deep CryEngine experience — I mostly know it from Crysis, and that’s basically the “poster child” for CryEngine visuals. But the bigger CryEngine conversation I shared matches what many devs have said over the years:

Amazing visuals, but historically rough documentation and smaller community vs Unreal/Unity.
Tooling/editor/asset pipeline has had a reputation for being “AAA-oriented” and unfriendly to small teams.
Heavy C++ reliance can shrink the talent pool and slow iteration.
Licensing / restrictions historically rubbed people the wrong way (even if that’s not always relevant to typical games).
Translation into player experience: if the dev team is small or under-resourced, CryEngine can be a blessing for visuals… and a curse for stability, workflow, and long-term support.

Linux / Proton Notes
Important point: Wolcen is a Windows-first game. On Linux you’re relying on Proton/Wine translation layers. So my review angle is:

If it runs stable for you: great — you basically got a “Windows game on Linux” win.
If you get crashes / weirdness: it’s hard to separate “Wolcen jank” from “compatibility layer jank”.
Either way, the fact the game is Windows-native matters. Linux players should expect extra variables.

The Long-Term Reputation (based on the mountain of reviews you provided)
Even if my first 2 hours were “fine”, Wolcen’s history is what scares people off:

Launch was infamous for bugs, progression breaks, server issues.
Balance has been described as a roller coaster.
Some passives/skills reportedly didn’t work properly for long periods.
UI/QoL complaints are constant.
Some updates allegedly caused progress pain / wipes / broken saves (depending on era/mode).
Communication issues / trust issues with dev handling (a recurring theme in your pasted reviews).
Multiplayer support being ended is a massive red flag for anyone buying it for co-op longevity.
That’s not “one salty reviewer” — that’s years of the same patterns repeating.

Pros & Cons
PROS

Looks incredible (CryEngine lighting and effects go hard).
Early gameplay loop can be fun if you just want ARPG dopamine.
Build system concept is genuinely interesting on paper.
CONS

Feels derivative — “Diablo 3 / PoE echoes” more than its own identity (so far).
The game’s historic bug reputation is brutal.
Balance + clarity + QoL complaints are common and persistent.
Windows-first (Linux users add extra risk/variables).
Long-term trust problem: many players don’t believe updates will “finally fix it”.

Verdict (from a 2-hour first impression, with history in mind)
If you want a pretty ARPG to smash monsters for a while, Wolcen can scratch that itch. But if you’re hunting a “main ARPG” to grind for years, theorycraft deeply, and trust your time investment? This game’s legacy makes that a hard sell. Recommendation: Wait for a deep sale unless you’re specifically craving a shiny Diablo-like snack and don’t mind risk. Score (so far): 6/10 first impression Confidence level: Low-to-medium (because I’m only 2 hours in, and Wolcen’s problems tend to show up later)
