This is honestly such a cute and (almost) wholesome little game. I decided to buy it right after finishing a very heavy and stressful (although also good) one, and it was just what I needed to calm down. It's simple, but elegant. It tells a sweet little story without overwhelming you with info. You can build up a little routine, but it doesn't overstay its welcome. You can pet the cat. You can use the most adorable fast travel I've ever seen. The soundtrack is simple in a pleasant way like the rest of the game. I didn't notice any bugs whatsoever. The tiny bit of "NewGame+" or post-credits scene was such a fun surprise (make sure to check out
the last song in the jukebox
). ETA after I saw another reviewer talking about frantic resource gathering: There's a timer for each day, but there's nothing you have to accomplish during that time and no limit to the number of days. There's a lore bit that makes things a little bittersweet, which I wouldn't have needed. Most of all I wish I wouldn't have had to kill animals for potions - not even very small animals that the protagonist doesn't like. Other than that, I'm very happy with this little hidden gem and I hope to see more from this dev. * * * If you like chill and story-driven games, check out my curator Peaceful Adventures and Stories. Could I possibly persuade you to make a final push for some additional 'points of interest' or some wildlife to make the forest more vibrant, maybe something like deer, raccoons or squirrels just running around. It's not a bad game, but it feels a little bit too empty, with the exception of those rare moments where you do meet a few creatures like the bear or the forest creature. It's a very basic crafting game which in itself is not a problem, if anything it can be a good thing, that said, about 66% of the locations are being used only for gathering which makes it a bit hollow and unrewarding to explore, it feels like it should have a few extra side quests or more optional interactions with extra achievements. Even if you just have more animals walking around, maybe giving them food, or just interacting with more creatures or characters, it really feels like the forest needs to have more points of interest. Otherwise, it feels like a linear fetch quest that is only carried by the looks and the narrative. Actually finding that little secret in the end was very satisfying because I felt like I should have been finding something like that the whole game. I think the whole point of exploration games is to catch the player's attention, and reward them if they choose to engage with something that is not directly connected to the narrative. You have all these blocked paths, but a lot of the time it's just another chunk of the forest with a few bushes, the game is begging to have more things to discover. Takes about 2 hours at most to finish if you not screwing around, you just have to leapfrog your crafting materials, and eventually you find something to complete the game. There is virtually no actual challenge to the game or thinking really, everything falls into place if you just keep playing.
Pros:
(+) It's just a really chill and cute game with a lighthearted story, if you want something lite on the gameplay and not worry about doing something wrong. (+) I do like the visuals, but I wish there was a bit more biome variety or more creatures to look at.
Feedback:
I felt the game needed more optional content or more creatures in the forest - it just felt a little too empty, it feels like it could use more forest creatures, if not maybe a few optional characters or optional quests. Something like that hidden door, a couple more things like that would be nice. Maybe a few more crafting goals or post/game content - it would be nice if maybe after beating the game, perhaps you could unlock another room, maybe grind some achievements as well, or just a few extra crafting goals, cosmetic things for a house or a few different hats. More achievements would be nice Overall Thoughts: 7/10 It's a nice and relaxing narrative experience, but for the price I thought it was still a little hollow, maybe if you added some creatures or more optional content, just to make exploration a bit more wholesome. You should not shy away from doing things like that hidden door, I was looking for things like that the whole game, it's a shame it never really happens except for that one part. It's a bit odd that you only have 4 achievements and nothing to collect beyond the narrative, maybe some optional crafts for cosmetics or the house. Short and sweet exploration and crafting game. P.S Check the outside of the cottage after finishing the game, you might find something.
Winter Witch is a fun, cozy, little slice of gaming. It did not take long to complete, and was charming throughout it's entire runtime. This was a breath of fresh air after work for a couple of evenings. Thank you, Solar Vagrant!
This was such a good little game! I had so much fun with the demo that I bought it straight away. The art, sound track and design are so cozy and well thought out. Its a gorgeous little cozy adventure to explore the woods and pet the cat. I cant say much without spoilers but it took me an hour to complete and I love it so much I will be recommending to everyone and I want a sequel. FANTASTIC 10 out of 10 pies!
Its a cute short story game :3 i liked it a lot. controls only use keyboard input no mouse/cursor functionality but it wasnt that bad. gameplay is very forgiving theres really nothing you can do wrong besides making progression take a while longer. other than that its a cute game :3
short little game with cute characters. its very kind about travelling, offering fast travel points, a speed boost item, and a return to base button, so you can get more done in a day using all of the above. the art direction is also nicely done, and i really liked the dynamic tree shadows for telling the time.
What if you were a little witch exploring a storybook forest but the trees were so soothing to look at? Venture forth, gather items, get back home for bedtime and craft items to get a little further next time. Look at those trees. They are nice!
What a lovely little game. Very polished with a lovely aesthetic. The gameplay is simple, the tasks are pleasant, and while you have a limited number of hours in the day, you have infinite days. Pet the cat, have some tea, and go out to explore the winter witch.
Winter Witch is a game where you have to frantically collect as many resources as you can, juggling ingredients for a variety of recipes, all before a countdown timer ends the day and sends you home for the night. While this seems like a setup for an incredibly stressful game, Winter Witch somehow managed to remain quite the opposite! The game felt calm and cozy the whole way through. The graphics, music and animations were all designed to drive home this warm and fuzzy feeling. Resources were scarce enough that I had to think about what I needed, but plentiful enough that I could always gather the desired amount. Resource collecting never felt grind-y, and despite being on a timer I never felt rushed. Winter Witch did feel a but lacking in terms of puzzles. The basic gameplay loop was "explore until you find new ingredients, make the recipe that is unlocked as a result, explore new area unlocked with said recipe." The hand-holding even goes so far as to tell which item you have can clear the selected obstacle. The only real puzzle came at the very end, in very last area that you explore. My biggest complaint was that the game never told me the button to open my inventory. I knew there must have been another menu somewhere, because I couldn't figure out how to eat/drink food. I tried all the usual buttons; "esc", "i", "enter", "x". No luck. Meanwhile, I kept grumbling to myself about how the game badly needed a visible inventory and perhaps a map. Finally, after getting more than halfway through, it occurred to me that the elusive button was probably listed in the game's "controls" option on the main menu. There I discovered that the button in question was "space bar". This brought up a menu that had everything I was looking for: inventory, map, and most importantly, a way to eat/drink food. Oh well. Better late than never. Despite these minor critiques, Winter Witch was still an extremely enjoyable experience! It was clearly made with a mood-first mentality, and the mood was spot-on. If you have a few hours of quiet late at night with a warm cup of tea, definitely give this game a go! (also, hurry up with Door 4!)
