The game does not try to explain anything because everything starts happening right immediately. It involves a couple sitting at home when a monster bursts through the window. The man quickly jump up and runs into the forest. You take control of the woman who goes after him. Your only tool is a flashlight, which helps you see better in the dark and find critical objects faster. The flashlight works similarly to twin-shooters, so you have complete control over it. Aside from this and the movement keys, there is only one button that allows you to examine items. When you spin the flashlight around, anything vital becomes visible from a long distance, making it difficult to miss something. More significantly, the flashlight allows you to repel nightmare creatures who attempt to kill you. You will not be able to kill or get rid of them, but you can focus the light toward them, causing them to freeze or turn away. However, certain things are drawn to them, so you must find how they behave. Fortunately, the whole thing is easy. Stages are small trials in which you must navigate a maze, find the safe way, and keep away from creatures. For example, some lily pads in the swamp are trapped, and the concealed eyeballs can only be seen if you shine a light on them. Stages are short since there are no checkpoints, which means you have to go back to the beginning if you die. Although you can save the game, it’s very short and can be beaten in around one hour. You get a few fun stages, an explanation for the nightmares, and pretty decent graphics and flashlight, but not much else. This makes the game a bit too expensive, so I suggest you wait for a sale.
Whispers in the Shadows is an atmospheric indie horror experience developed and published by Sugradh_Dev. The game adopts a minimalist approach to the horror genre, focusing less on elaborate storytelling or large-scale mechanics and more on creating tension through environmental design and simple survival systems. Set in a remote wilderness filled with ominous forests, caves, and shadowy paths, the game places the player in a quiet but unsettling environment where something unnatural lurks just beyond the edge of the light. Rather than presenting a traditional action-oriented horror experience, the game encourages careful exploration and constant awareness of the darkness surrounding the player. The story begins with a seemingly ordinary night in a cabin deep within the woods. However, the sense of normalcy quickly fades as strange whispers and shadowy figures begin appearing in the distance. Drawn by curiosity and a growing sense of unease, the player ventures into the surrounding wilderness to investigate the source of these mysterious disturbances. The narrative unfolds gradually through exploration rather than direct exposition. Instead of long dialogue sequences or cinematic cutscenes, players uncover fragments of information scattered throughout the environment, slowly piecing together the unsettling events taking place in the forest. One of the most defining mechanics in Whispers in the Shadows is the player’s reliance on light. Armed with a torch, the player must navigate areas where darkness dominates the landscape. The light serves as both a source of visibility and a defensive tool against the creatures that inhabit the shadows. Many enemies are repelled by light, meaning that keeping the torch pointed toward threats can prevent them from approaching too closely. However, the beam only illuminates a limited area, leaving large portions of the surroundings obscured. This restricted visibility creates a constant feeling of vulnerability, as players can never be entirely sure what may be hiding just beyond the reach of the light. The gameplay revolves largely around exploration and survival. As players move through forests, caves, swamps, and other eerie locations, they must carefully manage their movement while remaining alert for hostile creatures. Combat is minimal, and the game often encourages avoidance rather than confrontation. Some enemies retreat when exposed to light, while others attempt to circle around the player or strike from darker areas outside the torch’s range. Learning how each enemy behaves becomes an important part of surviving the journey, as reckless movement can easily lead to dangerous encounters. Exploration also plays an important role in uncovering the game’s subtle narrative. Hidden objects, environmental clues, and scattered pieces of information gradually reveal the deeper mystery behind the whispers in the forest. The story is intentionally ambiguous, leaving many details open to interpretation. This design choice allows the atmosphere to carry much of the narrative weight, creating a sense of unease that lingers even when no immediate threat is present. Players often feel as though they are uncovering fragments of a larger, darker story that remains partially hidden within the environment. Visually, the game relies heavily on lighting and contrast to establish its mood. The top-down perspective provides a view of the surrounding terrain while still limiting what the player can see clearly. Large sections of each area remain enveloped in darkness, with only the torchlight revealing small patches of the environment at a time. This technique enhances the tension of exploration, as players must move cautiously through spaces where danger could appear from almost any direction. The environments themselves are simple but effective, emphasizing atmosphere over detailed visual complexity. The sound design contributes significantly to the game’s unsettling tone. Subtle environmental noises such as rustling leaves, distant echoes, and faint whispers accompany the player’s movements through the forest. These sounds often hint at unseen activity nearby, encouraging players to stay alert even when no enemies are immediately visible. The combination of quiet ambient soundscapes and occasional eerie audio cues creates a sense of isolation that strengthens the psychological horror elements of the experience. One aspect that defines Whispers in the Shadows is its relatively short length. The entire experience can typically be completed in roughly one to two hours, depending on how thoroughly players explore each area. While this brief runtime may leave some players wishing for additional content, it also allows the game to maintain a focused atmosphere from beginning to end. The short format ensures that the tension remains consistent without becoming diluted by unnecessary padding or repetitive sections. However, the limited scope of the project does come with some drawbacks. Because the gameplay mechanics remain fairly simple throughout the experience, there is not a great deal of variety in how challenges are approached. Exploration, managing the torchlight, and avoiding enemies remain the core activities from start to finish. Players looking for complex puzzles, combat systems, or extensive character development may find the game somewhat minimalistic. Even with these limitations, the game manages to deliver a memorable horror atmosphere through its careful use of darkness, sound, and environmental storytelling. The tension created by navigating dangerous spaces with only a small source of light can be surprisingly effective, particularly for players who enjoy slower, suspense-driven horror experiences. The simplicity of the mechanics allows the focus to remain on mood and exploration rather than complex gameplay systems. Ultimately, Whispers in the Shadows stands as a small but atmospheric entry in the indie horror genre. It demonstrates how a focused concept—surviving in darkness using light as protection—can create a compelling experience even within a limited scope. While it may not offer the depth or length of larger horror titles, it succeeds in delivering a tense and eerie journey through a mysterious wilderness filled with unseen dangers. Rating: 6/10
the game itself is not bad but the gameplay and story is practially none exixtent and it feels like a bunch of random ideas put together
