This game is an amazing rollercoaster of emotions and Locke is relatable. We all have regrets, we all make mistakes, and this game is really deep and made me think about my life. Honestly I found it really healing even though I like the music but I'm not super into it as a premise for the story it serves it's purpose well. I loved Remmy and his little talks and the color coding. I was disappointed in Iro in my ending and I brought the band together again which was definitely better than those honestly flawed girls. Your friends are really nice to you but those girls are just as mean/horrible as Locke used to be because I tried to make him change. I got a green ending and Remmy said I was driven. I loved the male characters because there were really nice and sometimes the girls were nice but I never committed to them. Even though the green girl was so hateful, that's who my character ended up like but I was so happy to get their band and keep their friendships. Those girls were harsh my gosh and seemed to like him as a bad person more than as a good one but I didn't commit to any one of them because I am an otome/BL fan primarily so I was glad this wasn't a girl dating sim and had other options. The music was very nice and not what I expected heavy metal to sound like - it was really soothing music? I don't know anything about music so eh? 1. This game is color coded for clarity. 2. The premise is interesting and the story is clear and concrete. 3. People change a lot in this game. 4. Game has relatable themes of regret and moving on. 5. This game has some good quotes - my favorite being "There is only one choice." 6. There is a friendship option and a truly happy ending (no spoilers). 7. Don't get too attached to the girls, this is a story-driven and not romantic game. Unless you commit to one of course then I'm sure it's fine. 8. Nice art, story, writing, soothing music (heavy metal is soothing? lol idk), and a good, healing story 9. As an adult of similar age to the characters I understand missing the past and having regrets, but just like I made my Locke, me and him have both moved on as our hearts are still aching. 10. If you've lost somebody, this game gets even more emotional. 11. I needed this game in my life, today, one of the best 2,8 hours of my life, I won't forget this game and I play hundreds of games a year so that means something big! 10/10!!!
No fancy graphics
Just good story telling, a lot of it. Well, where to start, um, perhaps with a warning around life crises?
Trigger warning Klaxon
Some pretty deep topic material, lots of girls, lots of boys and a love of rock music and the dark. 3 festival goers who are not that young anymore are trying hard to forget, to forget how their band broke up. Their drummer has died. Locke, your character blames himself; Killian wants to disassociate; while Rullo is having his own crisis. But Mateo, well Mateo the drummer comes along anyway, in spirit. Making it all the more difficult because everyone has skeletons aplenty anyway. The girls, Remmy, Iro, Rakel, Tuuli and more are a window into the boys past, a past they are needing to reclaim after loosing a friend. And Locke is into girls, literally. But that is his distraction and his poison. For the other young men, it's alcohol. All rendered in simple cardboard cutouts, it's a choices matter game where the stakes are still very high, even if the drummer has already cashed out. The 3 boys need to deal with the loss of their friend, but each in their own way. Each choice you make opens or closes dialog options which you do get to see afterward, but not use. Making this perhaps a good reason to play through more than twice.
Long
The game is long, and you get pretty deep into the characters minds, but it feels a bit longer still, because the graphics are basically just 5 or 6 re-used settings with cardboard cutouts that move. The soundtrack gets a bit monotonous after a while. 2 scenes stand out though, a bit of concert music, which is far too short, and a star-lit sky scene which for me was one of the climax moments. So those are my only 2 negatives, no banging or grooving sound, and very little of the hand drawn artwork which makes VN games work. But it is free! I do wish I had time to play this and many games through a few times, but reviews do not write themselves. This review was going to be longer, and cover the main game topic. But the game script is really good and does a brilliant job which I can not top. It's going to got into the "Painfull to play" collection of sad games https://store.steampowered.com/curator/41773079-EmpathyGames/list/91748/. I have to note, the sad games I like them all, because I gain insight and always feel better about my own journey by comparison. If you did like this game, let us know in the comments, which character you liked the most.
There's a certain method I really like when it comes to discovering new games for myself and easy to imagine, that very likely many others do it in a similar way or what's it like for you? how do games find their way to you? let me know in the comments. For me, it often works like this, most of the time when I've played a game and I don't know the developers yet, I study what else they've put out, check out their YouTube channel if there's anything, and have a look at their homepage. For each game, I turn to reviews several times, and when I'm done with a game, I look for reviews not only accurately written, where it resonated with my feelings, or simply surprised me in a very positive way, but specifically for profiles that combine more or less everything mentioned and with something like an aura which makes me assume that there must be an extremely interesting person behind this profile. So I give out some likes and prizes to people who have written cool stuff, write a few comments here and there if possible and appropriate, and then go over to check out that particular special profile. Once there, I study which games we have in common, then I look at the entire list, then I go through the reviews again, and that's how I found: Where The Music Dies and I'm kinda happy about it, or not? I don't know. As mentioned I didn't know Red Skald before, On itch.io it says: "...is a one-person game maker. Hello. I create games that interests me...do everything myself" And on the wordpress page it says: "...aims to make dark and twisted games, that are fun to play..." The thing is, everything I have to praise here, at the same time comes with a BUT, If you're reading this Red, please don't take it personally, especially since it wasn't meant to be derogatory. Overall I like what you did here, no one should ever forget how much work it is and I really do respect that, and when you're satisfied with the way things are going, wouldn't want to do it any other way, then continue the same way and don't listen to anyone, especially not to someone like me. BUT, just because you can apparently do everything by yourself, doesn't mean it's always the best option for the product, cause even though you've gotten a thumbs up, and sorry BUT can't say that it was fun to play, It was just as depressing as the story. I mean it's a good thing that you have included an option, where we can regulate the speed of the text... BUT unfortunately that doesn't help that much, It felt like a clicker game, very annoying. And don't get me wrong, I don't say lousy story or stuff is bad, BUT missed depth and character development, and a good old fashioned (well-thought-out) dramatic curve. Apart from that your story is okay, it has a reason to be told, there is a main character, it starts with a conflict and also arouses emotions. If I had to rate the storytelling, it would be something like a 4 or 5 / 10 BUT with a passionated and very experienced writer on your side, it could have been a 7 maybe 8 or even a 9 / 10 you get my point? Another nice thing that has been built in there, are those many save slots, If you want, you can easily use it to explore the different storylines, BUT for someone like me this falls flat because I've already had enough and the gameplay depresses me even more. A little more substance, better music and sound design and I would have bought the DLC immediately, someday I will play these two games also from Red Skald: Find Someone Else and Pandemic Love. BUT, first of all I need a long break from all of this. (...I wander out where you can't see. Inside my shell I wait and bleed...)
Honestly, I loved this game. It took me about 2 hours to complete my first run where I got the "pink" ending I think, the caring route (correct me if I'm wrong), and I'm genuinely curious what other possible ending there is so I'll be playing this game a bit more. I love a lot of the lines and the moral I got from the story line about choices (I'm not saying any more, you should check it out since it doesn't have a lot of reviews!) and I shed quite a few tears upon asking myself the same questions and reflecting on them. I love leaving silly reviews, but did game made me feel something and that's art to me ♥ I do wish there was an achievement system or whatever though to see how many routes there is or which one we've completed. I think that's what the colour system is for but there is to be said more than 8 endings.. so we'll see!
If you're already familiar with the dev's other Visual Novels and enjoyed them, then definitely play this one too. I doubt you could go wrong with it since it has the same mechanisms and similar atmosphere, despite the story setting having a different vibe. The story itself is rather short but there are many choices so it's fun to play several times to discover different routes. Also the music choices really made me feel represented lol. Iro is a huge vibe as well, love her. Besides that, the story has a quite heavy feeling to it, genuinely everything is miserable yet no matter the amount of choices, there's still no way to achieve a positive change. To be honest, I can't really think of how to phrase my thoughts but it feels like a crime that this game has gotten so little attention so I hope that reviewing will help a little. I'd love another game in this style :)
First of all, this game is definitely not for everyone - especially if you are dealing with some personal tragedies or major depression at this time. That said, I am dealing with some depression and unhappy life circumstances right now, but still was able to get quite a bit out of this game. We all generally know that our actions and words can have consequences beyond the immediate time, and can even effect people not directly involved in our actions. This game can be a reminder to be aware, as much as possible, to how what we are doing effects others. The game was a challenge for me in that I tried, in a way, to make the main character conform and think the way I do. However, my expectations of what might happen next ended up being very different from what actually transpired. So, on my first go round, I did not achieve a very desirable result. On my second try, though, I did manage to keep out of trouble and get the band members to look forward to keeping the band together. Success!
It is a fascinating game that might resonate with some people more deeply than others. I've played other games by this developer, but this might be my favorite one. The art style always creates an eerie milieu. There are so many dialogues that you might miss from only playing it once. You always find something new about a character in every playthrough. Though, if you play it once the background of each character might feel very vague which left me at least frustrated the first time I played it. The self-destructive aspect of Locke might resonate with some people one way or the other and I appreciate the self-awareness in some dialogues and the support from his friends. Matteo's dialogues are very well written as well. A game well done to say the least.
This is what depress feels like.
