Amazing game. The combat is what I enjoyed most. The bosses where really well made and the few patterns they had made them difficult but fun to fight. Same with the enemies that usually had 1-2 types of attacks. You could really see the smart design choices the developer made. The music was awesome, specially the song that played in the cave. I´ve always dreamed of a fast paced platformer when you use primarly melee combat. This game was a dream come true! The death animation of the player is kinda lame. There were some stressfull parts where I couldn´t make some jumps, and stuck on them for a long time(specially on the king's tower). Fighting golems felt boring and tedius except when they where fought alongside crows, which made it interesting having to juggle between stomping golems and killing crows. Otherwise fighting golems slowed down the game and was not fun imo. This game is a 7/10. The unreachable platforms didn´t feel like my fault for not reaching them. Having to retry the same jump about 50 times really ruined the hype to meet the final boss for me. Besides that and the lack of game feel this game would be perfect. This was the most fun I've had playing a game in years, I wish I knew more games like this.
Fast paced, fun, fluid combat, with just the right amount of challenge. A steady ability based progression, a-la Metroid, with platforming that is familiar yet inventive. All packed into an 8-Bit retro package, that doesn't overstay its welcome. After playing through Hyper Light Drifter I was looking for a good fast paced action game. Way of the Red came up on my suggested games list. I was immediately drawn to the retro style. It definitely invokes a classic NES 8-Bit style. And not the "clearly couldn't be done on the old hardware" way, this truly looks like a NES Game. It borrows designs from Metroid / Castlevania, gating progress by abilities that you learn. The platforming is well done, allbeit a bit stiff at first, but I warmed up to it nicely. The swordplay is where the game shines, it is fluid and fun, and you certainly feel like a badass when you can get the combos right. It does a good job of making things feel really difficult but in a fair way. Though the checkpoint system could be a little better. I will often find myself just close enough to the next checkpoint that having to redo all the previous encounters is a bit of a chore. The story is simple, but I think that works to its benefit. The fact that it was made all by one guy is also really impressive. I am curious to see what he makes next. Highly recommended!
Way of the Red was an enjoyable experience from start to finish for me. I enjoyed everything about it, from the story, the platforming, the fighting, and even dying multiple times didn't deter me from playing. Special kudos to the graphics and music direction too- it's all just stellar. It's definitely an under-the-radar game that is just an excellent example of what a single game developer is capable of! I really hope to see more from this developer in the future! Also, thanks for making an awesome game about birds as well. <3 For more in-depth commentary about the game, check out my podcast where my cohost and I talk all about our experiences playing Way of the Red. Probably the smoothest fighting platformer i have played in a long time. This game really does not hold your hand, and there is a definite need to explore "rooms" thoroughly. Make sure you are climbing everywhere you can. The combat allows for some pretty sick combos as you wail through enemies while trying to not die yourself. You will regularly findyourself heavily outnumbered and feel amazing when you clear the area. Highly recommended.
