Play this game for the solo playthrough but not online mode or co-op because ubisoft servers wont let you play online :\
i tried. i tried. the tailing missions and sneaking unseen just suck. so unfun. ubisoft is overrated
Watch Dogs got a lot of hate back in the day for not living up to the expectations set by its E3 reveal. Looking at it now, I honestly think it's one of those games that has aged really well, especially considering the direction the AAA industry has taken over the last decade. The best way I can explain it is this: Sleeping Dogs feels like the natural successor to GTA IV, and Watch Dogs does the same for Sleeping Dogs. Not because it's trying to be bigger or better, but because all three games share something that's becoming increasingly rare: open worlds that feel cohesive, immersive, and genuinely enjoyable to simply exist in. I first played it back in 2014 and recently decided to replay it, this time with the T-Bone DLC. One memory that always stuck with me was driving around The Loop while Confidential Liar by Vannatica played on the radio, behind the wheel of what is basically Ubisoft's version of a Subaru Impreza WRX. It only took a few minutes to remember why that moment stayed with me. The world is fantastic. Chicago feels alive in a way that many modern open-world games still struggle to achieve. It's not just the activities or collectibles. It's the random NPC conversations, people reacting to what's happening around them, the small dynamic events you run into while simply walking through the streets, and the overall atmosphere. The city actually feels like a place instead of just a giant map full of icons. A random detail that I personally loved is that several of the additional voice actors also appeared in D. Wolf's One Chicago TV series. It's obviously a tiny detail, but if you've watched those shows, Chicago ends up feeling oddly familiar because of it. Another thing that deserves a lot of credit is the fact that the online mode is still alive over twelve years later. I had never really tried it before, but I ended up having a lot of fun with it. The invasion mechanic, where another player hacks into your game and you have to figure out which NPC they're hiding as within a certain area, creates some genuinely tense moments. The same goes when you're the one invading someone else's game. Once both players start using hacking abilities against each other, everything quickly turns chaotic, stressful, and surprisingly fun. The story is basically your typical government conspiracy thriller. You could probably swap in the name of almost any Hollywood action movie and it wouldn't feel out of place. That isn't a criticism, though. It's a solid, darker story that stays interesting throughout, even if it never reaches the point where you're blown away by huge plot twists. One thing that deserves more credit is the audio logs. They add a surprising amount of context to both the characters and the overall plot, making the world feel much richer. I can also understand why some players skip them entirely, especially if they just want to finish the main story without chasing collectibles or achievements. The T-Bone DLC, unfortunately, is the complete opposite. I found it incredibly forgettable. It feels like fan service for the sake of fan service, with a story that's difficult to care about. It's only ten main missions followed by a bunch of repetitive contracts, and it never comes close to matching the quality of the base game. Another thing people used to criticize was Aiden himself, saying he was unlikeable. After replaying the game, I couldn't disagree more. Aiden is cold, distant, and emotionally closed off, but everything he does revolves around protecting what's left of his family. I don't really see him as an antihero because the game itself never tries to frame him as one. If anything, by the end he's left with regret rather than becoming more consumed by revenge. I wouldn't even call him a vigilante. He's not driven by some higher moral code. He's simply a man chasing revenge, leaving destruction behind while slowly realizing that none of it will actually undo the damage that's already been done. What really disappoints me is that we never got a prequel showing how Aiden and Damien first met, how they started working together, or how Aiden became one of the best hackers in the first place. There was a lot of interesting backstory left unexplored. Honestly, it's not hard to see why Ubisoft put the Watch Dogs series on ice after the later entries underperformed. But replaying the original reminded me of something I'd almost forgotten: There was a time when Ubisoft made genuinely great open-world games.
didnt know bedbug is more fragile than a stupid bedbug
I used to play this game a bunch on the PS3, and I want to enjoy this game, I really do... but the amount of annoying bugs this game has is infuriating and makes it really hard to enjoy. There are times where I'm playing with a controller and everything is fine, but then there are times where my character ends up automatically aiming and shooting randomly- causing me to fire upon every civilian in front of me. You can't play this game on Steam and have access to its online features unless you own this game through Ubisoft Connect, and that alone isn't enough either. You have to download the game through Ubisoft Connect and play it there to gain access to online play. Fortunately I already owned the game through there, but not with the DLCs. I got the steam version on sale for the complete pack. As of writing this review, it is my 3rd save I've had to go through because on my first save, achievements weren't unlocking- so I restarted my save (which then started giving me achievements), and then the 2nd save I had to reset as well because of the online play hassle. Downloading the game through Ubisoft Connect ended up deleting my previous save, which is why I decided to give this game a review. I really don't know if this is just a me issue and I just got really unlucky with this game, but I'm tired of having to troubleshoot a game over and over again, having to restart the entire game, and then dealing with the terrible controller support this game has. Watch Dogs is just not worth getting through Steam.
Played on a low-spec laptop in 2016, finally completed on Ultra in 2026.
Back in 2016, when I was a sophomore in college, I tried playing this on my absolute potato of a coding laptop (we’re talking a 5th gen i5, 8GB of RAM, and a tiny 2GB 920M card). It lagged like crazy and ran terribly. The experience was miserable, but I always told myself that one day, I’d play this properly on a powerful PC. After 10 years I’m 30 now, sitting in front of a rig that easily maxes out modern AAA games at 2K high graphics, and I finally decided to give Watch Dogs another shot. Honestly? It holds up shockingly well. Looking back, this game was totally ahead of its time. The mix of GTA style open world freedom with actual hacking mechanics makes it super unique. The NPCs feel incredibly alive to be honest, the crowd behavior and world atmosphere feel better than GTA V in a lot of ways. The story is decent (maybe not a masterpiece), but the gameplay is where it really shines. Messing with traffic lights to completely wreck the cops during a high-speed chase or using fluid parkour to slip away just feels amazing. Playing this a decade later hit me with a massive wave of nostalgia. It felt so good to finally do justice to the game after all these years. If you passed on it back then or couldn't run it, definitely give it a spin now. It’s worth it.
This is tough because I love the game and really enjoy the stealth gameplay alongside the grenade launcher for some mayhem. I want to play more of this game but the issues are too glaring that I cannot recommend to people. 1. Shaky cranes Because of the age of the engine it expects a refresh rate of 30-60FPS. If you are running higher FPS than this you get cranes that shake and even lead to you flying out into a different area while riding them... 2. Liverkernel 141 error At this time of this review I just finished beating Act 3's final mission. When I finally got to the end end of the mission just before it registers I completed the mission, my PC froze and ran into a livekernel 141 error. Which caused a multitude of issues. It seems I am not the only person who has run into issues of 141 errors. https://www.reddit.com/r/pchelp/comments/1m3e2sd/pc_crashes_with_windows_error_code_141_after/ 3. Random death??? There was a mission where I had to lower my framerate, shoot the area and stand next to the house to hack in a specific mission on Act 2 BUT if I did not do all of this then the game would say they died??? I did some research into this apparently if your framerate is too high then they fall under the geometry of the map and die (game expects 60fps) Gameplay and stealth: Overall I enjoy it. I like that you can go cover to cover, there are gadgets and you can do a bunch of mini games. The game definitely has put TLC (tender love and care) into ensuring the game is fun in that regard. I played on keyboard and must say the driving is not similar to NFS, you must use the brake otherwise cars are very hard to control. Story: Very real concepts here. I like the grim nature. Overall: Overall I would not recommend the game for the issues but if you do wish to play I recommend ensuring you put the game on 60FPS. I can understand this game was created a long time ago and Ubi has been running into financial issues for the past few years but that does not excuse the issues mentioned above.
In order to play this online (the entire reason I bought it), you need to message Ubisoft support so you can get a Ubisoft Connect key. The game has a universal issue across Steam where this copy doesn't handshake Ubisoft's servers. To fix this you need to message Ubisoft support, wait a week for support to escalate your case (after giving you a hard time about you.. owning the game on the account you're messaging them from) and pray that they hopefully give you a key to the Connect client so you can play that version instead of the one you bought. You also can't play this version without using Ubisoft Connect at all, which is BS but well known at this point. I still would have expected Ubisoft to either fix this or at least update the store description to say online functionality for the Steam version doesn't work anymore. If that's what you're after, my advice is to save yourself the headache and just buy it on Ubisoft's POS client. I'd refund this if I could, but I was past two hours by the time I finished the tutorial and found out about this issue. Fawk Ubisoft. This game is good, but just get it via other means lol. THEY UPDATED THE GAME TO HAVE STEAM ACHIEVEMENTS OVER A DECADE AFTER RELEASE, BUT YOU PHYSICALLY CAN'T GET THEM ALL.
