I really wanted to like it, and I do weirdly enjoy playing it, but I don't think it's a great game. Combat is great, both ground combat and space combat are enjoyable, and that's probably why I enjoy it so much. The locations and environment look great too, you can tell just from the sample pics. But the story is awful on so many levels. The dialog is so boring and repetitive. Look, I get it, it's a 40k game, for the emperor and all that, but honestly it feels like that is every conversation. "I did a bad thing" Choose either 1. (KIll them) - "FOR THE EMPEROR" 2. (Dont Kill Them) - "FOR THE EMPEROR". When you become the Rogue Trader you have 4 separate initiation ceremonies, they take a long time, include boring dialog, and 3 of them end in a chaos surprise attack. Everything you do, everywhere you go, everything is corrupted by chaos. I actually didn't mind that at first, it felt almost episodic. Show up at a planet, oh the government is chaos agents, kill them all, establish the colony, back into the air. After you work on clearing that up, the Dark Eldar show up, stand around long enough to explain their plans, and leave, before you can pull the trigger. Then later they capture you and bring you to their BDSM dungeon planet, taking away all your gear for the whole chapter, and it becomes one of those "you have to do evil in order to be good but we'll judge you for it later" kind of sections. Im having trouble forcing myself to continue, because it's so bland and awful. The level up system takes forever too, and you get so many levels that you are going to be constantly scrolling through menus. This is one of the first games I have ever gotten a level up and said "Ugggh, Im not doing that now."
I have not been this immersed in an RPG in ages. And I am not even deep into Warhammer 40K. Granted, you need patience to read A LOT. And all the many talents are a bit too detailed. But the way this world comes to life is really impressive. I played with the first 3 Story DLC. Especially the third is really cool and the companion from the first DLC is one of my favourites. I will likely play through it all again, when the final story DLC comes out. This time I was a "nice" Rogue Trader (Iconoclast) and I was amazed by the many, many dialogue options I could have chosen at many points. Don't like that one member in your retinue? Just go to the Inquisition guy and tell him to take care of the Heretic! Bam. If you wanted to, people can be thrown out the airlocks left and right. Brutal stuff! Next playthrough will likely be Dogmatic, full FOR THE EMPIRE! Which maybe fits better with the world. I don't think I could pull of a Heretic run. But who knows! Amazing game.
I really like this game! When Baldur's Gate 3 came out, the press seemed very enamoured with it. I get that it is an outstanding example of the craftsmanship of game making, but it didn't catch me as much as it seemed to the rest of the internet. I just find Rogue Trader much more engaging. For example, it highlights in dialogue, which story bits are consequences of your choices. I have started a few BG3 playthroughs and it seems you have to really flip your character alignment on its head to get different outcomes. Here even choosing where you first land after the prologue changes the situation on the second world, which makes me want to try another playthrough. But my first one is captivating enough that I want to follow through with it first, which wasn't the case with BG3. I also prefer 40kRT's skill system. While there is still quite a number of abilities and traits to read through, the multi-tier Archetype system seems to make character progression more approachable. Plus the gameplay offers greater variety. I enjoy the back and forth between the classic CRPG part, managing your ship and realm, the text-based events during space-travel. Finally I am indeed partial to the setting. DnD just feels like a bag of partially stale fantasy clichees. Some of them also make their way in here e.g. as Aeldari ≈ space elves, but over all I just thought way more often, what a cool character or setting. I have my qualms with 40k too. The books tend to amount to a lot of descriptions of fighting or battle scenes. Here I have had one time so far, where I thought it was getting a bit combat-heavy and there is of course a theme of getting to a place, discovering some chaos-derangement and purging it in a non-heresy playthrough. But on balance that risk of monotony gets broken by the companion stories, the mystery elements of the main story and the different game "phases".
Amazing game
