A relic from the past, when warhammer40k was very different, when Eldar could be protagonists. Not brain dead deceitful and arrogant antagonists. 10/10 awesome game I recommend it to whoever loves Eldar and turn base strategy.
I plan on finishing this game, but I just wanted to say that the game boots and works well. I know this was available on GOG, but it's cool to see it come to a wider audience. Love the Aeldari, and it's such a rare treat that we get a game focused on them.
Наконец-то игра по вахе, где мы играем за хорошую фракцию!
Great game, brings back many fond memories playing it. Back when Eldar were called Eldar! Not Aeldari. Played on Steam Deck and unfortunately (i haven't found a way around this yet) when you promote one of your army, upon accepting all army management changes, the game crashes. Looks like Steam Deck gamers may need to play this without any Exarch (or other promoted units) which may make this slightly tougher in the later game. For the small cost, it's worth it purely for the nostalgia.
*Warhammer 40,000: Rites of War (Classic)*, developed by DreamForge and published by SNEG, is a methodical turn-based strategy game that blends the structure of classic hex-based wargaming with the distinct tone of the Warhammer 40K universe. Built on a system similar to traditional military strategy titles, it prioritizes careful planning, positioning, and long-term resource management over fast-paced action. The result is a game that feels deliberate and calculated, offering a tactical experience that rewards patience and thoughtful decision-making. The campaign places players in control of Eldar forces, guiding them through a series of battles that gradually escalate in scope and intensity. While the narrative itself remains relatively straightforward, it provides a consistent backdrop that ties missions together into a larger conflict. As the campaign progresses, new threats emerge and enemy forces grow more formidable, giving a sense of momentum that pushes players to adapt their strategies. Each mission contributes to a broader war effort, reinforcing the idea that success depends not just on individual victories, but on maintaining a capable army over time. Gameplay revolves around turn-based combat on hexagonal maps, where each unit has defined movement, attack capabilities, and strengths depending on terrain and positioning. Infantry, vehicles, and specialized units all fulfill specific roles, and understanding how they interact is essential to success. High ground, defensive cover, and proper unit placement can significantly influence the outcome of engagements, making positioning one of the most important aspects of the game. While the basic rules are easy to grasp, the depth comes from mastering these interactions and anticipating enemy movements. A key feature of the game is its persistent unit system. Forces carry over between missions, gaining experience and improving their effectiveness as they survive battles. This creates a strong sense of continuity, as veteran units become valuable assets that players will want to protect. Losing experienced troops can have lasting consequences, forcing players to carefully balance risk and reward in every encounter. This system adds emotional weight to decisions, as success is not just about winning a battle, but about preserving the strength of your army for future missions. Compared to other strategy titles from the same era, *Rites of War* strikes a balance between accessibility and depth. Its mechanics are complex enough to provide meaningful strategic choices, but the interface and structure make it more approachable than some of the more simulation-heavy wargames. Players can quickly understand the basics, yet still find depth in optimizing their tactics and managing their forces over the course of the campaign. However, the game’s age is evident in several areas. Visually, it relies on simple graphics and limited animation, which, while functional, lack the detail and dynamism of modern strategy games. The interface, although usable, can feel dated and occasionally cumbersome, especially when managing larger armies. Artificial intelligence is serviceable but inconsistent, sometimes offering a solid challenge and other times behaving predictably. These issues do not undermine the core gameplay, but they do remind players of the game’s origins. Mission design, while varied in layout and enemy composition, tends to follow familiar patterns. Objectives often revolve around eliminating opposing forces, capturing key locations, or surviving specific conditions. Over time, this can lead to a sense of repetition, particularly during longer play sessions. Despite this, the strategic depth of the combat system helps keep engagements engaging, as no two battles play out exactly the same. Ultimately, *Warhammer 40,000: Rites of War (Classic)* is a strong example of traditional turn-based strategy design, offering a thoughtful and rewarding experience for players who appreciate careful planning and tactical execution. It does not rely on modern conveniences or visual spectacle, instead focusing on systems that encourage strategic thinking and long-term decision-making. For fans of classic wargames and the Warhammer 40K setting, it remains a compelling title that captures the essence of tabletop-inspired combat. Rating: 7/10
I loved this and never want to play it again.
It Works! Sounds good. Audio , I meme!
yes. works on linux
This game is older than I am, but as a fan of both the Eldar and tactics games, this is a really great gem. It runs smoothly and has the perfect amount of classic jank to be charming without impeding how it plays. The missions and units have enough variety to provide a full experience that doesn’t feel repetitive. If you like classic tactics games and/or the Aeldari this is worth your time.
I have the original running in wine with no issues. This version current (as of this writing) run in Proton/Linux without crashing whenever you try to promote a unit. On the one hand, this is still a winnable game, but it is really annoying. It begins around mission 5/6, I think as a side effect of the custom mime? I can't recommend the game in the current state. I do love the old SSI 90s games, though.
