A Legit Cyberpunk Shmup Hiding Behind a Goofy Strip Gimmick
A cyberpunk bullet hell shmup where you rescue beautiful warriors captured by a rogue AI that drained their life force, aided by an android guide. As the third entry in the series, its graphics and boss design -- rebuilt on a new engine -- have evolved significantly from the predecessor. While retaining the strip'em up concept of "the better you play, the more you reveal," it delivers genuine substance as a full-fledged shooter. The game cycle is simple yet addictive. Choose from 6+ ships, blast through wave-based stages while collecting currency, and upgrade speed, firepower, and more during each run. Characters' clothing is gradually stripped away as you clear stages, and a "VR Hacking" toggle lets you switch between censored and uncensored views. Each ship handles differently with its own strengths, so finding your favorite and stacking upgrades is part of the fun. While a single run is on the shorter side, the combinations of ships, characters, and difficulty levels sustain the motivation to keep coming back. One caveat: the starting ship has movement inertia, making it noticeably awkward to control. Just push through until you unlock other ships by progressing through stages. The eight cyberpunk girls each sport distinctive designs, with diverse body types and skin tones that catch the eye. The hand-drawn anime-style illustrations are appealing, and with 4K support plus pseudo-3D elements introduced for the first time in the series, it is fair to call this the best visual quality the series has achieved. The enhanced gallery mode is well-equipped with angle adjustments, outfit selection, and visual filters, making it enjoyable to take screenshots of your favorite characters. The high-energy arcade soundtrack pairs well with the cyberpunk setting. Three difficulty levels (Easy, Normal, Arcade) are all unlocked from the start, but despite marketing claiming it is "easier than before," even Normal puts up a solid fight, and boss battles can be quite punishing if you neglect upgrades. The bullet density is already demanding from the opening waves, and Arcade mode delivers the full baptism of a proper bullet hell shmup. On the other hand, a streamer-safe mode that completely removes strip elements and a special one-hand ship are available, showing consideration for players' diverse needs. Local co-op and Remote Play Together are also supported, adding the fun of dodging enemy fire alongside a friend. Beneath its goofy strip gimmick lies what can be called a solid bullet hell shmup. It brims with self-parodying humor, yet the impression is favorable precisely because its foundation as a shooter is sturdy. As a budget-priced, pick-up-and-play arcade experience, this is a title that can be recommended to both bullet hell fans and strip shmup enthusiasts. HHF-chan's comment: "Goofy strip bullet hell shmup. The bosses are brutal enough to make you writhe, but that rush when the last clothing piece comes off -- nothing beats it!"
Check out our Steam curator (link) , YouTube channel (link), and X(Twitter) (link)!
There is a genuinely great shoot 'em up game here. This is a good purchase for a game where you can have an enjoyable shoot 'em up with a good variety of ships, and a good variety of difficulties and a good variety of bosses. There is a lot of fun to have here just playing the game, even if you always play in censored mode and pay no attention to the girls or the story. And I mean that as high praise, if you like shmups, pick this up. This is the third game in the "Waifu Uncovered/Waifu Discovered" series, and the developer's skills have been polished with time. If you liked Waifu Uncovered or Waifu Discovered 2, you'll love this game. Much like WD2, visually, the game has beautiful art. There are 8 waifu that are easy to find and at least one other that is hidden for dedicated players. (There's also a DLC you an buy to unlock everything if earning things in game isn't your cup of tea.) It feels like the developer really wanted each ship to feel unique in this game, and I definitely think he accomplished that. The game has Beginner (Easy), Normal, Arcade (Hard) and Expert (Very Hard) difficulty, and at least one hidden level that can be accessed, so there's plenty of variability in your challenge here. There's also a one-handed mode for people who want to play with a mouse, though I haven't tried that mode. How does this rank against adult shmups? This is up at the top, along with games like Epido (a personal favorite of mine) and above WD2. Balance-wise, this is an early review, and I suspect there are a few areas where tweaks will happen in the coming weeks, but I am already very positive about this game. It is leaps and bounds ahead of where WD2 ended up, and Expert is truly an enjoyable challenge that will require skill and game knowledge to beat. What would I warn someone about? The starting ship, K. Vaio Jr., seems like more of a joke ship. He's the only ship that doesn't seem to be intended to be used much after you unlock other ships. He doesn't start unusually strong or have any major strengths, but he has some major weaknesses that are a funny enough joke, but once you unlock other ships, I would use any ship except the junior ship. My other complaint is the difficulty of the opening waves of the later levels. This is MUCH better than it was at game launch, but there's still a few patterns that aren't enjoyable and feel like a knowledge check. You don't get to see the Waifu fully uncovered unless you kill all the enemies in the opening waves of that stage. My biggest complaint in Waifu Uncovered 2 was that it was the one thing that could derail a high score run, it can take away from the fun of feeling like you're playing well and it can remove the ability to see the waifu. It is less problematic here, but a few of the later waves are more frustrating than challenging, but after post launch tweaks, I can successfully clear the opening stage of each level on most runs. The K. Vaio Jr. joke is hopefully a joke character that will make you chuckle and choose a better ship. I'm very hopeful the balance of the opening waves is tweaked in the coming weeks, but neither of those give me hesitation in recommending this great game. It's a challenging game with beautiful art that's a lot of fun to play. Highly recommended!
Much like Waifu 1 and 2, the skill floor can be pretty high and the skill ceiling even higher. Since this is now the third game in the series, much of my review is going to be compared to the first two entries. But also keep in mind, the engine was rebuilt from the ground up, this is not from the building blocks of the first two. Graphically, this blows the first two out of the water in terms of girls. The options you have when viewing them is vastly superior as well. The other design elements are suitable and in line with the series. This might be what you're here for. Music is enjoyable and higher energy this time. Helps keep you wanting to play even if you happen to lose. Story? You likely aren't playing this for it's story and that's okay! You are here to strip and save girls. That's the plot. This is similar to the first two. Difficulty, while the store page claims this is easier than the first two games, I *so far* have found the game to be harder. While Waifu 1 was fairly easy to complete and unlock everything, Waifu 2 demanded more completion runs to unlock everything. This game looks like it will require similar mastery to 2 as if you don't learn and practice you will get filtered hard and quickly. Bosses can be pretty brutal this time around and without understanding their patterns you will be defeated and often. I've only finished Normal with Kat and almost all of them nearly killed me. The lower your DPS, the harder a time you will have with them overall. Defeating them ejects coins everywhere and while it would make sense they do so you can collect a monetary reward, I prefer just getting a straight payment like 2. There is a low price DLC for those looking to break open what the "game has to offer" if you find things too difficult or merely wish to support One Hand Free Studios upon full completion. As far as the ships go, some of the ship parameters have been altered and unfortunately they don't feel as strong as they did before. There is a quality of life improvement in that you can see your ships DPS clearly in the top left of the shop. Power ups can either seem abundant or scarce and I'm not sure what triggers getting more upgrades to keep pace with the levels. You will eventually hit capacity here in some stats and it can be frustrating. Limit breaking may be different, but I haven't devoted serious time to breaking the game over the wheel. The game does feel faster paced and the levels tend to take less time than previous installments. Even when you lose, you aren't losing hours of progress. Like 2, you can purchase / win coins to revive IF you so choose and that can help you better learn bosses or just finally beat a level / earn a reward you were stuck on. They were a welcome addition in 2 and it is good to see their return. Reviving only costs you your score, not progress. The happiness meter returns and getting 10+ happiness to get 4 stars on a level can be rough. Granted, this is all day one and as Peteer01 mentioned, this is in a better state overall than Waifu 2's launch. I look forward to seeing the game and this series improve over time. There are secrets to unlock and strategies to be had regarding which stages to tackle in what order and when to try for specific outcomes. Surprisingly deep for a game like this. Overall, if you are a fan of the first two games or 'Lewder Shooter' games in general, this will be a welcome addition to your library.
For a sequel of Waifu Discovered 2 (WD2), which is also a fine game, this one does not disappoint. On each stage the goal is to save waifu, by collecting shards. Shards are dropped by defeating enemy waves. When enough shards are collected a piece of clothing is removed and next stage of level starts, culminating with the boss at the end. Compared to WD2, the bosses in this game are more advanced, not necessarily harder (may depend on learning patterns and getting more familiar with the game). After each level a shop is available to buy upgrades for your ship. Game also gives you ability to buy resurrection coins, which are essentially continues, but you do not need to spend then in your current game session. What I found is good strategy is to play on normal difficulty to farm those coins. Then do next game session on arcade difficulty with those coins available. Note that if you want to chase high scores you don't want to use coins, since score resets on getting defeated. What keeps game interesting is that winning against specific bosses unlocks more ships to play with. Also on each win, a gallery is unlocked for each waifu, which gives more and more options the more time you win. While simple, galley is improvement over WD2, allowing you change facial expressions of the waifus (including randomize option adding many combinations), options to zoom/rotate the image, add color filters, customize level of clothing worn as well as what NSWF elements are available. Regarding NSWF, the game features nudity only, with options to scale it down (have mandatory underwear, show censor objects hiding naughty bits, etc...) Do I recommend this game. Definitively! But I am slightly biased, since I did play the previous title in the franchise. What is important to know is that the game is improvement over previous title, and for the price it costs, can give many hours of fun. And if you haven't played WD2, buy that one too.
Waifu Discovered 3: Cyberpunk Fantasy is a special game to me in many ways. First of all, I love the shoot ’em up genre. However, I also think this game can appeal to players who enjoy hand-drawn anime and manga-style Waifus, even if they have played very few shmups—or none at all. The game includes a Beginner mode, which makes it much more accessible for newcomers. It also features the series’ “strip ’em up” mechanic, where the Waifus gradually lose pieces of armor and clothing as you progress. The fully nude version of this mode must first be unlocked, which I think is perfectly reasonable. The gameplay feels smooth and enjoyable, with six different ships to unlock. Between stages, you can visit the shop to purchase upgrades and improve your ship. There are four main difficulty settings: Beginner, Normal, Arcade, and Extreme. The game also includes a One-Hand Mode, where you can control your ship entirely with the mouse. Overall, Waifu Discovered 3 combines satisfying shmup gameplay, attractive hand-drawn artwork, unlockable content, ship upgrades, and plenty of replay value. It works well both for experienced shoot ’em up fans and for newcomers who are mainly interested in the hand-drawn artwork and characters. If this sounds like your kind of game, I also recommend checking out the two previous games in the series: Waifu Uncovered and Waifu Discovered 2: Medieval Fantasy.
Great game. You got a selection of 6 ships which all play different and can be upgraded during a run. Your goal is to save the waifus by removing their clothes. The gameplay is really fun and the music fits the scenery well. If you like Shmups with a challenging difficulty combined with puzzling elements to unlock all the secrets this is the game you are looking for.
That they are selling an "easy" mode DLC should tell you how difficult this game is. It's an extreme schmup and then some. NOT EASY. The bosses are downright sadistic and they probably wouldn't be so bad if their parts had a few less HP. Sometimes it's just easier to kill them if you can instead of trying to make things easier by shooting bullet spitting parts. I got up to 4 levels in arcade mode and I have no idea how anyone will handle expert mode. Then again, I'm not a schmup expert. Also, the goat is the meta here. I had difficulty with all the other characters and even the first character you get was seriously in trouble by the next to the last boss. However, the price is cheep, the girls are well drawn and the game is a fun time sink as long as you don't expect to win. Plays on Linux with Steam Proton 11 (CachyOS)
Waifu Discovered 3 is a great upgrade over Waifu Discovered 2. Fighting bosses is more fun then ever. Controls are really smooth and good. Art has never bin better then this. Waifu Discovered 3 is totally worth is.
⭐ Minha nota pessoal: 9 / 10
