At-A-Glance:
Game type: Action Genre(s): Run-and-Gun Art: Old-school Flashplayer aesthetic with a retro PC action game look Length: Short (3-4 hours for everything) Pace: Fast-pased Tags: Retro, shooter, fun colors Computer requirements: Very low-end
Notes:
[olist] [*] This is a Steam port of the titular game that was on Newgrounds back in the day - a site/platform for making and uploading games, videos, etc. Lots of now-famous game got their start around Newgrounds, including The Binding of Isaac. [*] I like that stuff such as this is being preserved through Steam. Venusian Vengeance isn't some masterpiece of run-and-gun design, but there's a very specific kind of early-2000s nostalgia here. [*] You run and you gun. Just hold down that mouse button to fire... until you get the rocket launcher. Yeah, the game's weapons actually kinda need more than just walking forward - which is kind of nice for something of this vintage. [*] The PC-music soundtrack and garish colors remind me so much of Amiga games and some very early DOS games. I'm really into that - it's just on the cusp of annoying, but in a way I have some affection for. [*] Play hard mode. Just do it - if you want something that recalls the old-school NES/90s computer game kind of anger and frustration, then that's it. You'll still beat the game in 2 hours or so - but you'll be mad! And that's why you're here! [*] The lighting effects in the cave level are pretty dang good. [*] The RNG really bites you in the ass on later levels. Hard mode with the
ninjas
is excruciating - I would edge up ever so slightly up so I could just barely get one or two to load so I wouldn't get swamped. It's even worse on the speeder bike level, which has aged just as well as you'd expect a Flashplayer speeder bike level to age. [*] Overall, this was fun. I did everything and got all achievements in about 3 hours. This was a nice distraction and breath of fresh air from some other games going on. [/olist]
pretty simple nuclear throne-lite shooty thing but solid and appropriately goofy
Venusian Vengeance is a retro-inspired action shooter developed and published by Renegade Sector Games that proudly embraces the spirit of classic arcade adventures. Built around an alternate-history science-fiction premise, the game transports players to a version of the 1960s where the Cold War has expanded beyond Earth and into the depths of space. The Soviet Union has established a secret research facility on Venus, and the United States responds by sending a lone operative, Sgt. John Dagger, to uncover a dangerous super-weapon before it can alter the balance of power. The result is a colorful and entertaining blend of science fiction, pulp adventure, and old-school action that feels like a lost arcade classic brought into the modern era. The game's narrative is intentionally exaggerated and filled with the kind of adventurous energy associated with vintage science-fiction serials. Rather than focusing on realism or complex political storytelling, it embraces over-the-top action and absurd situations. Players are thrust into an alien world where Soviet soldiers, strange Venusian creatures, hidden laboratories, and secret experiments all become obstacles standing between them and their objective. The story is simple but effective, serving as a framework that continuously pushes players toward new environments and increasingly dangerous encounters. Gameplay revolves around top-down shooting and exploration. Players move through hostile areas while battling large groups of enemies, collecting weapons, managing health, and searching for pathways forward. The controls are easy to understand and responsive, allowing players to focus entirely on combat and survival. There is very little unnecessary complexity, which works well because the game's strength lies in its fast-paced action rather than elaborate mechanics. Combat remains engaging throughout the adventure thanks to a diverse range of enemies. Soviet troops armed with various weapons share the battlefield with dangerous alien lifeforms unique to Venus. These opposing forces require players to remain adaptable and alert, as different enemies demand different approaches. Some threats overwhelm through numbers, while others rely on speed or firepower. This variety helps maintain excitement and prevents encounters from becoming repetitive. A particularly enjoyable aspect of the game is the weapon progression. As players advance through the campaign, they gain access to Soviet technology and increasingly powerful equipment. New weapons provide meaningful upgrades and create a satisfying sense of progression. Acquiring stronger firepower feels rewarding because it allows players to confront larger challenges while still preserving the game's overall difficulty. The gradual accumulation of better weapons reinforces the feeling of becoming a more capable operative as the mission unfolds. The game's environments contribute significantly to its appeal. Players travel through multiple locations across the Venusian landscape, including military facilities, underground cave systems, research laboratories, and dense alien jungles. Each setting introduces new visual themes and enemy arrangements that help keep the experience fresh. The developers clearly put effort into creating environments that feel distinct from one another while maintaining a cohesive science-fiction identity. Visually, Venusian Vengeance succeeds through its charming pixel-art presentation. Rather than chasing graphical realism, it embraces a colorful retro aesthetic inspired by classic action games. Character sprites, environmental details, and enemy designs all contribute to a nostalgic atmosphere that feels authentic without becoming outdated. The vibrant depiction of Venus helps the game stand apart from many other retro shooters that often rely on darker or more generic settings. The soundtrack complements the action effectively. Energetic music accompanies combat encounters and exploration sequences, maintaining momentum throughout the campaign. Sound effects provide satisfying feedback for weapons and enemy defeats, helping every firefight feel impactful. While the audio presentation is relatively straightforward, it supports the gameplay well and contributes to the overall arcade-style atmosphere. One of the game's strongest qualities is its pacing. The campaign rarely wastes time with lengthy interruptions or unnecessary distractions. Players are constantly progressing through new areas, discovering stronger weapons, and confronting increasingly difficult enemies. This forward momentum keeps the experience engaging from start to finish and ensures that the adventure never loses focus. The inclusion of a harder difficulty mode provides additional replay value for experienced players. Enemies become faster, encounters become more demanding, and the margin for error becomes significantly smaller. This mode encourages mastery of the game's mechanics and offers a worthwhile challenge for those seeking something beyond the standard experience. It also extends the game's longevity by giving players a reason to revisit the campaign after completing it once. The game's commitment to old-school design does come with a few drawbacks. Difficulty spikes occasionally feel abrupt, particularly during later sections where enemy numbers and aggression increase considerably. Players accustomed to modern conveniences such as generous checkpoints or extensive customization options may find some aspects frustrating. The game's arcade roots are evident in both its strengths and its limitations. Additionally, the overall experience is relatively straightforward compared to modern action games. There are no deep progression trees, branching narratives, or extensive customization systems. Some players may view this simplicity as a limitation, while others will appreciate the game's refusal to overcomplicate its core formula. The focus remains squarely on action, exploration, and survival. Ultimately, Venusian Vengeance succeeds because it understands its audience and executes its vision confidently. It delivers a focused retro shooter experience filled with imaginative environments, satisfying combat, and a wonderfully ridiculous Cold War science-fiction storyline. The game never attempts to be anything other than an entertaining action adventure, and that clarity of purpose works strongly in its favor. For fans of classic arcade shooters, pixel-art action games, and old-school science-fiction adventures, Venusian Vengeance offers a rewarding journey packed with charm and challenge. Its combination of nostalgic gameplay, memorable setting, and fast-paced combat creates an experience that feels both familiar and distinctive. While it may not revolutionize the genre, it serves as an excellent example of how classic game design can still be engaging when executed with creativity and enthusiasm. Rating: 6/10
Honestly. I was surprised by this game. 4.50 CAD is a good price for a solid run and gun shooter. It's punishing gameplay with forgiving checkpoints made me want to keep playing a little longer. Recommended for an afternoon if you're looking for a good experience and enjoy run and gun shooters.
The bullet hell no one asked for
