Game isnt done yet but has a lot of potential, WHAT IT NEEDS: more items, more quest, more classes, bigger maps and more bosses. Maybe ultimate or "super ability" during combat sometimes? Better terrain tactics on the battle grid? More vision and a larger playfield on the battle grid? Randomly generated traps or random events on the battle grid? | What it doesn;t need: your ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ opinion, game is not done yet.
Not bad for a one man developed game
"Valley Knights" is a very poor quality and objectively failed attempt to make an RPG with turn based tactical combat on a hex grid. The focus is on dark gritty RPG stuff, but the technical delivery is of such poor quality that gamers found themselves less engaged with understanding the game and more engaged in wondering why such a poor quality product could get published on Steam at all. Spoiler: Steam Direct only costs $100. The graphics aren't great. That's understandably be turn off for a lot of gamers, and it's a big contributor to the failure of the game to attract gamers despite having no up-front cost. Gaming is a primarily visual medium, and if developers want to succeed, they must understand that it's not an area for compromise. You deserve better than compromises. You're forced to sign a highly questionable yet legally unenforceable End User License Agreement... for such a relatively low effort, low quality product, this comes across more as a delusion of grandeur than anything else. This agreement includes questionable requirements that may attempt to revoke consumer law protections that gamers expect to have, which is also highly problematic. Developers must learn they are here to serve gamers, not control them. I had my cat walk over the keyboard while the EULA was displaying, which fixed that problem for me. The developer chose not to do the job of a real game developer and create meaningful bespoke levels, narrative based gameplay progression and so on. Instead, they decided that "Procgen IS content!" and lazily tried to use procgen algorithms to create infinite, samey, repetitive, soulless levels, because that's a lot less work. As a result of this poor decision, the game gets tired and repetitive almost immediately. Developers must learn that procgen is a terrible substitute for creating real content. It should not be used as "ez-mode" for content creation, as the developer tried to do here. It's free... now, but it wasn't before. The developer was charging $15 USD for this. Remember how this has a EULA? The delusions of grandeur didn't stop there, apparently. Price barriers, especially on low quality products, can be a direct cause of failure. It's a nice gesture for the game to be given away for free, but it also tells us that the game wasn't good enough to succeed as a paid product. Despite having no up-front cost, this failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 4 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Nope. This isn't worth downloading. While this didn't cost me any money up front, I still feel ripped off.
Developer Response!
The developer has weighed in to inform everyone they didn't read the Developer Usage Rules for Steam "partners", or they deliberately ignored the part where Valve says:
Though it may be tempting, not every review needs to be responded to. A developer response will frequently draw more attention than the original statement, potentially turning a small issue into a much larger community discussion. It's also not a good idea to use this feature to refute customer opinions. Your direct attention can be seen as validation or a defensive attempt to silence your customers.
The developer admits they didn't hire a team of talented staff to produce the game and tried to do the whole thing on their own, instead. This is a lot like boarding an airplane, and halfway through the flight, having the pilot come out and serve peanuts. It's going to end in disaster. It requires a team of competent people to do a complex job properly, and that's not what has happened here... another explanation for the poor quality of this game. The developer wants you to know they "learned a lot" by publishing garbage on Steam Direct where nobody wanted it. That really hammers home the point... this is Steam, for gamers, it's not for unqualified developers who have no idea what they are doing to dump homework assignments and tech demos onto Steam just to "learn" anything... developers should know what they're doing before anything else. Polluting Steam with garbage from developers who now apparently admit they are unqualified and unfit to publish products they know aren't good enough for Steam hurts everyone, and it gives amateur developers an even worse name. The developer comments that this informative review "felt" hurtful, but developers must understand that game reviews are not written for them, they are not the audience for the review (and probably shouldn't read them at all if they are uncomfortable with accepting the truth about their failure). Reviews are written to inform gamers about products and provide advice on whether a game is worth money, time, or both. Such developers often do not consider that, just like the reviews, games they make should be made for gamers, and not just to make the developer feel good about themselves. Regardless, game reviews are not written for the developer, and thus should not be taken personally if it turns out some (or most) people don't like their product. This review is not the cause of that failure, this review is more of an autopsy after the fact. Nothing in the developers pointless breach of Valve guidelines changes any of the objective facts of my review. My review stands unaltered. I cannot recommend this game to anyone.
Before I played Valley Knights, I had a small pp, no friends, no gf, depression, and no life. These things havent changed, but the game is pretty good
